Doing More From Outside

From Nature To Bottle | The New Chapter Quality Story

Paul Schulick said he turned down a consultancy offer with P& G because he wanted to be free to speak his mind about the importance of and the strength of the science behind some of New Chapters signature products.

Among those he mentioned where Zyflamend, for prostate health, LifeShield Mind Force, a mushroom blend for mental clarity and focus, and the new Golden Black Seed, a combination of organic black seed and organic turmeric to support health blood pressure and health blood sugar levels.

Paul Schulick has long advocated for the point of view the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act saved the dietary supplement industry while at the same time painting it into a corner. There is a lot of what he considers to be excellent science behind herbal products that at best can be whispered about behind closed doors.

I think in a lot of ways I can do more for New Chapter now being outside of the brand than within it. Im definitely not going to retire. I am busy at work creating our next venture. It is going to have a strong basis in education, he said.

Barbi Schulick said her message to New Chapter devotees is to keep the pressure on P& G to maintain the standards of the brand.

We do want New Chapter to succeed. Our call is now to the consumers and stakeholders and anyone who cares about New Chapter to ask the P& G management about them. When new products come to market, we want them to ask if they are formulated in a way to provide the most optimum healing, she said.

Dietary Supplments: What The Industry Does Not Want You To Know

Much of what we believe is shaped by what we see, read and hear. The media’s mes- sage about supplements–those substances regularly ingested as pills, powders and liquids by over one-half of all Americans in their quest to feel better and live longer–is decidedly mixed. We often read or hear stories about the benefits of taking supplements like vitamin E, St. John’s wort or coenzyme Q10. Often these stories refer to published scientific studies demonstrating usefulness. A week later, we read or hear a report about the dangers of the same substance, with warnings by a designated expert to stay away from it.

This is not an article about the media or politics, but a few words about what’s behind the news and what the media calls “science” are in order. Actually, one word is in order. The word is MONEY. Money vastly influences what is reported and the slant placed on that reporting. So where’s the money? Most ads on the nightly news are drug company ads. And newspapers and magazines today are full of drug company ads. This means we should expect enormous bias against anything that would take away from pharmaceutical profits. Youre Basically Wasting Your Time If You Do Take An Expired Vitamin

Typically, the shelf life for something like a multivitamin is around two years. Robert Dadd, the in-house master herbalist for supplement companyFlora Health, said youre probably OK to take vitamins after the use-by date. However, he noted, you are potentially losing a lot of the product benefits along the way.

Because we dont do testing past the best before dates, we cant guarantee the potency or quality at that point, he said.

But Traas said to err on the side of caution, suggesting that its best to avoid taking a post-date supplement if you can.

From a safety standpoint, I would never tell someone to take an expired product, mostly because you dont know the circumstances on how the product was stored or if it came into contact with any contaminants, she explained.

She pointed out that moisture, mold and temperature variation can all cause a product to degrade overtime and thus become potentially harmful.

If youre going to invest the time, energy and money into taking a vitamin, taking one that is formulated for your body to use, and is still within its expiration, is the best way to go, Traas added.

The most expensive vitamin you will take is the one that doesnt work … the likelihood of you feeling a difference goes down dramatically with expired products.

And while you may save some money by taking expired products, Traas said she typically follows the adage you get what you pay for.

New Chapter Every Woman

We personally tested many brands of different prenatal vitamins throughout various stages of conception and pregnancy. We also drew on past personal experiences with issues such as nausea and vomiting in pregnancy and investigated common concerns and complaints with prenatal vitamins among pregnant women, like bad taste and smell.

We read the current scientific literature and consulted with medical professionals as well. The doctors quoted throughout this piece include three different OB-GYNs as well as a registered dietitian who reviewed product selections and consulted with us on what to look for, as well as what to avoid, in prenatal vitamins.

When considering various options, we looked for:

How To Shop For A Prenatal Vitamin

  • Consider costMost people assume that the more expensive a vitamin is, the higher its quality, but that’s not really true, Dr. Brimmage says. Higher cost doesn’t denote quality, and for that reason, we’ve kept all recommendations reasonable.
  • Avoid health-washing claimsTake claims like “breast support blend” with a grain of salt, Dr. Brimmage advises. Claims like this aren’t necessarily bad or dangerous, and he notes that he’s never seen a prenatal in this country that he’s worried about. But these kinds of phrases aren’t necessarily true or effective since vitamins aren’t regulated by the Food and Drug Administration .
  • Read the ingredientsWith gummy prenatals, you want to be mindful of artificial coloring, notes Hammer. And if you’re vegan or vegetarian, you’ll want to look for a prenatal gummy or capsule without gelatin, says Hammer. Dr. Brimmage adds to not worry about extra sugar since the amount potentially in a prenatal is relatively small compared to your overall day.
  • Mainstream Medicines Blunder #: Calcium

Typically, doctors will tell those with low bone density to take calcium or drink milk. But they make no distinction between the organic forms of this mineral and the inorganic. And chances are, prescribed calcium is inorganic. Now, dont get me wrong. The body can effectively utilize small doses of inorganic calcium, but when doctors prescribe or recommend calcium, the dosage is typically around 1,000 mg a day.

The most common calcium supplements are made of carbonate, citrate , dolomite, di-calcium phosphate, tri-calcium phosphate, coral, oyster shell or bone meal, and all variations of amino-acid chelated calcium . While they may have different names, they all have one thing in common: they are all inorganic.

This kind of calcium is not easily bioavailable, especially in large quantities, which most likely explains its association with increased risk of heart attack.

Best Multi Vitamin for Men? New Chapter Whole Food, Fermented Multivitamin Review

With so many multivitamins available, deciding what product to choose can feel overwhelming. Here are a few factors to consider:

    • Age and life stage. There are multivitamins made specifically for different age groups, as our nutrient needs change as we age. On a similar note, people who are pregnant or breastfeeding should opt for a product thats specifically formulated to meet there prenatal or postnatal needs.
    • Dietary restrictions or allergies. Be sure to carefully read ingredient labels if you have a food allergy or dietary restriction.
    • Amount of nutrients provided. In general, its best to avoid products that contain megadoses of any vitamins or minerals unless a higher dose has been recommended by a healthcare professional.
    • Number of pills. If you have difficulty remembering to take your vitamins, opt for a product thats taken just once per day. Additionally, if you dont like swallowing pills, consider a gummy or chewable option instead.
    • Budget. Since some products recommend taking multiple pills per day, be sure to consider the price per serving when determining whether a supplement fits your budget.
    • Quality. Look for supplements that are thoroughly tested for quality and accuracy. Ideally, choose products that are third-party tested by organizations such as USP, NSF, or ConsumerLab.

Before beginning any new supplement, we recommend talking with a healthcare professional. Not everyone needs to take vitamins.

    Pills Can Irritate The Esophagus

Choking as a serious symptom showed up surprisingly often in the database we analyzed of problem reports to the FDA in the last five years, with more than 900 mentions. But true cases of choking, in which a pill actually goes down the windpipe instead of the esophagus, probably happen infrequently, says Joel Blumin, M.D., incoming chairman of the Airway and Swallowing Committee of the American Academy of OtolaryngologyHead and Neck Surgery. Thats a medical emergency that requires immediate intervention, such as the Heimlich maneuver.

More typically, Blumin says, pills irritate the esophagus, causing a muscle spasm, or get physically stuck or slowed. That sensation feels like choking, he says, but it isnt. Sometimes all you need is a second swallow or extra water to get the pill down.

To get a pill down easily, first take a swig of water to moisten your mouth and throat. Place the pill on the front of your tongue, take a sip of water, tilt your head back slightly, and swallow. Then drink the rest of the water to help propel the pill down your esophagus. People with persistent swallowing problems can switch to liquid or chewable formulations and should probably seek evaluation by an otolaryngologist.

Mainstream Medicines Blunder #: Vitamin D

When doctors prescribe Vitamin D usually after blood tests show a deficiency its almost invariably D2, also called ergocalciferol. And when Vitamin D is added to foods to fortify them , its always D2. But all Vitamin D is not the same.

Vitamin D2 is far less effective than Vitamin D3. Its not absorbed well by the body, but Mainstream Medicine continues to treat Vitamins D2 and D3 interchangeably. This study from The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition couldnt be more clear in its conclusion about the inferiority of Vitamin D2:

Despite an emerging body of evidence suggesting several plausible explanations for the greater bioefficacy of vitamin D3, the form of vitamin D used in major preparations of prescriptions in North America is vitamin D2. Vitamin D2, or ergocalciferol, should not be regarded as a nutrient suitable for supplementation or fortification.1

In the above study, it was revealed that D2 and D3 do not follow the same metabolic pathway as previously thought. In addition, D2 was shown to be quite unstable, and prone to toxic contamination due to the way its manufactured. Vitamin D2 is synthetically produced from irradiation of ergosterol derived from the mold ergot1 the authors state in the study. In contrast, vitamin D3 is manufactured in a similar manner to that which occurs naturally in human and animal skin.1

Heart And Cancer Protection Are Not Proved

Omega-3 pills and antioxidants are widely thought to reduce the risk of heart disease and cancer, respectively, and millions of women take calcium to protect their bones. But recent evidence casts doubt on whether those supplements are as safe or effective as assumed.

Calcium. The latest blow against calcium supplements was a report by German and Swiss researchers who followed almost 24,000 adults for an average of 11 years. They found that regular users of calcium supplements had an 86 percent increased heart-attack risk compared with those who didnt use supplements, as reported in the June 2012 issue of the journal Heart. On the other hand, there was a statistically significant 30 percent reduction of heart-attack risk among adults with a moderately high intake of calcium from food itself.

Why the disparity? The researchers theorized that the supplements may cause quick spikes in blood calcium levels that have been linked to risky lipid levels, whereas calcium in food is likely to be absorbed more slowly. Get calcium from dairy products, green leafy vegetables, and fish with edible bones, such as sardines.

Most people can get enough omega-3s by eating fatty fish at least twice a week. The American Heart Association says that people who have coronary artery disease may want to talk to their doctor about omega-3 supplementation.

Man Living With Rare Disease Starts New Chapter Thanks To Targeted Therapy

Jeff was in his late teens when he broke out into a rash of dark, itchy spots that eventually drove him to see a dermatologist. This doctor diagnosed him with systemic mastocytosis , a rare disease that causes the body to overproduce mast cells a key cell type of the immune system. What Jeff didnt know was the skin rash was just the beginning of his journey with SM.

Its been 30 years since Jeffs diagnosis and since then, his doctors determined he has Advanced SM, a subtype of SM. About 95% of patients with Advanced SM have a KIT D816V mutation a genetic change that can cause abnormal mast cells to build up in different organs, such as the skin, bone marrow and digestive tract, and may lead to life-threatening effects. While everyones experience with Advanced SM is unique, Jeff has had a number of recurring and unpredictable symptoms.

I had a skin rash known as urticaria pigmentosa all over my body, which would sometimes clump together and look like large bruises or lesions, said Jeff. On top of being in physical pain due to the disease, my skin condition caused me to be self-conscious in public.

He eventually ended his career in construction. He had a swollen spleen, and swelling in his legs made it a project to walk up a flight of stairs.
