Can Vitamin C Cause Heart Palpitations

How Much Vitamin C Is Too Much

Heart palpitations as a result of vitamin K2 supplementation

Since vitamin C is water-soluble and your body excretes excess amounts of it within a few hours after you consume it, its quite difficult to consume too much.

In fact, it is nearly impossible for you to get too much vitamin C from your diet alone. In healthy people, any extra vitamin C consumed above the recommended daily amount simply gets flushed out of the body .

To put it in perspective, you would need to consume 29 oranges or 13 bell peppers before your intake reached the tolerable upper limit (

19 ).

All the adverse effects of vitamin C, including digestive distress and kidney stones, appear to occur when people take it in mega doses greater than 2,000 mg .

If you choose to take a vitamin C supplement, it is best to choose one that contains no more than 100% of your daily needs. Thats 90 mg per day for men and 75 mg per day for women .

Summary:

Its nearly impossible to consume too much vitamin C from food. However, if youre supplementing with this vitamin, you can minimize your risk of getting too much by taking no more than 90 mg per day if youre a man, or 75 mg per day if youre a woman.

Vitamin C is generally safe for most people.

This is especially true if you get it from foods, rather than supplements.

Individuals who take vitamin C in supplement form are at greater risk of consuming too much of it and experiencing side effects, the most common of which are digestive symptoms.

Too Much Vitamin C May Cause Digestive Symptoms

The most common side effect of high vitamin C intake is digestive distress.

In general, these side effects do not occur from eating foods that contain vitamin C, but rather from taking the vitamin in supplement form.

Youre most likely to experience digestive symptoms if you consume more than 2,000 mg at once. Thus, a tolerable upper limit of 2,000 mg per day has been established (

Summary

Ingesting more than 2,000 mg of vitamin C per day may lead to gastrointestinal upset, including symptoms like diarrhea and nausea.

Vitamin C is known to enhance iron absorption.

It can bind to non-heme iron, which is found in plant foods. Non-heme iron is not absorbed by your body as efficiently as heme iron, the type of iron found in animal products .

Vitamin C binds with non-heme iron, making it much easier for your body to absorb. This is an important function, especially for individuals who get most of their iron from plant-based foods .

One study in adults found that iron absorption increased by 67% when they took 100 mg of vitamin C with a meal .

However, individuals with conditions that increase the risk of iron accumulation in the body, such as hemochromatosis, should be cautious with vitamin C supplements.

Under these circumstances, taking vitamin C in excess may lead to iron overload, which can cause serious damage to your heart, liver, pancreas, thyroid, and central nervous system .

Description Of The Trials

We identified 15 trials which examined the effect of vitamin C on preventing AF in patients at a high risk of AF . See the flow diagram of the searches in Fig. . Fourteen trials examined patients undergoing cardiac surgery, either CABG or CABG and valvular surgery . The 15th trial examined the recurrence of AF after a successful cardioversion .

Five trials were carried out in the USA , 5 in Iran , 3 in Greece , 1 in Slovenia , and 1 in Russia . The total number of participants was 2050. The mean age ranged from 56 to 73 years, and the proportion of males varied from 59 to 100% in the trials that reported sex distribution .

Most POAF trials administered 2 g of vitamin C within about 12 h before the operation and 12 g/day for 5 days after the operation, and followed patients for the occurrence of AF for the same period. In most trials, vitamin C was administered as tablets, although 5 trials administered it intravenously . See the description of dosages in the Additional file .

In the cardioversion trial , 2 g vitamin C was administered before the cardioversion and thereafter 1 g/day of vitamin C for 7 days. After a successful cardioversion, participants were followed for 7 days for the recurrence of AF.

Sodas And Coffee Are Commoncauses Of Heart Palpitations

The best thing that doctors actually do right when someone has heart palpitations is to tell them to stop drinking caffeine. Caffeine is probably the TOP reason that people get heart palpitations. Caffeine speeds up the heart and causes it to become more irritable. But it’s not JUST the caffeine that causes problems. Many people who get heart palpitations also lace their coffee with sugar or artificial sweeteners, or drink SODAS instead. Heart palpitations are common Side Effects of Aspartame, MSG, and artificial sweeteners.

While sugar can cause problems by taking up calories where you could be getting vital nutrients such as magnesium and potassium, it is also a ‘stress’ on the body and causes your sympathetic nervous system to become activated- which speeds up your heart and makes your body believe that you are in danger. Yes, sugar really does that to your body.

Even WORSE, however, is when people use artificial sweeteners in order to avoid using sugar. But artificial sweeteners are considered ‘Excitotoxins’ and these are terrible for you. Dr. Russell Blaylock, author of Excitotoxins: The Taste That Kills believes that artificial sweeteners are one of the main reasons that so many people get heart palpitations that lead to sudden death!!

“You have a million patients in this country witharrhythmias that are life-threatening, and no one’s tellingthem to avoid MSG and aspartame, yet it’sa major source of cardiac irritability.”Dr. Russell Blaylock

Can Vitamin D Deficiency Cause Heart Palpitations

Vitamin D deficiency is becoming a widespread health concern in the United States. A 2009 study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine estimated as many as 77 percent of Americans are vitamin D deficient. Vitamin D is essential for bone health, but it also helps regulate the levels of minerals in your body — including minerals important for heart function. As a result, vitamin D deficiency can cause changes in mineral levels, which in turn can negatively affect your heart. If you’re suffering from heart palpitations, seek immediate medical attention.

Can Atrial Flutter Cause A Heart Attack

Vitamin C as a treatment for AF

The main danger with atrial flutter is that your heart doesnt pump blood very well when it beats too fast. Vital organs like the heart muscle and brain may not get enough blood, which can cause them to fail. Congestive heart failure, heart attack, and stroke can result.

Do Multivitamins Cause Palpitations

Taking a multivitamin supplement doesn’t usually cause palpitations. Many multivitamin supplements contain recommended daily doses of most essential vitamins and minerals so unless you’re taking more than the recommended amount, you shouldn’t experience side effects.

The Vitamin D Council says excess blood vitamin D levels appear to have 2.5 times the risk for atrial fibrillation as lower vitamin D levels, as shown in a 2011 study presented at the American Heart Association’s annual meeting. But, Vitamin D Council notes that achieving vitamin D levels above 100 ng/ml are extremely difficult to do so you’d have to be in the sun consistently and take 10,000 international units or more of supplemental vitamin D daily. The recommended dietary allowance for vitamin D for adults is 600 to 800 IUs.

Consuming extremely high doses of vitamin D generally only happens if you’re taking vitamin D supplements in doses higher than what’s recommended on the label. Many multivitamin supplements contain just the RDA for each essential vitamin and mineral.

What Are The Best Heart Health Supplements

While there are many great supplements that can benefit heart health, none of them are a magic pill against heart disease, says Gina Sirchio-Lotus, doctor of chiropractic, certified clinical nutritionist, functional medicine physician, and owner of the LG Institute of Health in Chicago, Ill. Supplements are best used as part of an overall heart health plan that includes a healthy diet, regular exercise and good sleep habits.

There are seven nutrients that can be a good addition to a heart-healthy lifestyle:

    Plasma And Tissue Processing

After anesthesia, 1 mL of arterial blood was collected from the carotid artery and replaced with an equal volume of 9 g/L NaCl to evaluate the antioxidant capacity and the catecholamine and ascorbic acid concentrations in fresh plasma. At the end of the experimental procedure, total blood was withdrawn from the aorta, and the plasma was divided into aliquots and stored at 70°C until analysis. For vitamin C measurements, 2 volumes of 5% metaphosphoric acid solution were added to plasma samples before freezing and storage.

The thoracic aortae were rapidly removed and maintained in cold Krebs-Henseleit solution to carry out contractility experiments.

The heart was rapidly removed and rinsed with saline solution. The atria were excised and the remainder of the heart was separated into septum left and right ventricles, weighed and instantaneously frozen, crushed in liquid nitrogen, and kept at 70°C until use. After thawing, the hearts were homogenized in 5 volumes of 50 mmol/L phosphate buffer and used for vitamin C, vitamin E, and protein determinations. For vitamin C, 2 volumes of a 5% metaphosphoric acid solution were added to samples before freezing and storage. The adrenal glands were excised, weighed, and frozen in liquid nitrogen to measure the catecholamine content.

Does Too Much Vitamin C Cause Side Effects

Vitamin C Can Improve Iron Deficiency

Vitamin C is a very important nutrient thats abundant in many fruits and vegetables.

Getting enough of this vitamin is especially important for maintaining a healthy immune system. It also plays an important role in wound healing, keeping your bones strong, and enhancing brain function .

Interestingly, some claim that vitamin C supplements provide benefits beyond those that can be obtained from the vitamin C found in food.

One of the most common reasons people take vitamin C supplements is the idea that they help prevent the common cold .

However, many supplements contain extremely high amounts of the vitamin, which can cause undesirable side effects in some cases.

This article explores the overall safety of vitamin C, whether its possible to consume too much, and the potential adverse effects of taking large doses.

Vitamin C is a water-soluble vitamin, which means it dissolves in water.

In contrast to fat-soluble vitamins, water-soluble vitamins do not get stored within the body.

Instead, the vitamin C that you consume gets transported to your tissues via body fluids, and any extra gets excreted in urine .

Since your body does not store vitamin C or produce it on its own, its important to consume foods that are rich in vitamin C daily .

However, supplementing with high amounts of vitamin C can lead to adverse effects, such as digestive distress and kidney stones.

A Healthy Balance Of Sodium And Potassium Can Help Regulate Your Blood Pressure

These essential minerals work together like yin and yang to regulate many bodily functions, including important heart numbers like blood pressure. About 1 in 3 adults in the United States have high blood pressure, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention , and eating too much sodium and too little potassium may play a role in increasing your risk for the condition.

Even though the American Heart Association tells adults to consume no more than 2,300 mg of sodium a day, most Americans eat more than 3,400 mg a day. Unfortunately, most Americans also dont eat enough potassium, according to the 20152020 Dietary Guidelines. One way to strike a balance? Ditch processed foods as 70 percent of all sodium we consume is found in packaged and restaurant foods, according to the AHA. Instead, eat lightly salted, high-potassium vegetables, like squash and spinach.

For example, I will eat slightly undercooked organic potatoes, beans, or fish and I salt to taste, says Dr. DiNicolantonio. I use salt to allow me to eat healthier high-potassium foods, which tend to be bitter without salt. Men and women should aim to consume 3,400 and 2,600 mg of potassium, respectively. Talk to your doctor about what levels make sense for your situation.

Effect Of Vitamin C On Atrial Fibrillation

Figure shows the effect of vitamin C on the occurrence of AF in high risk patients. Over all the 15 trials, vitamin C decreased the risk of AF by 27%. However, there is significant heterogeneity between the 15 trials with I2=61% , which indicates that no single estimate of effect, such as the 27% mean effect, is consistent with the results of all the 15 trials, and thus the causes of the heterogeneity should be explored.

Effect of vitamin C on the occurrence of AF in high risk patients. The upper three subgroups are trials on POAF and the lowest subgroup includes the cardioversion study. The horizontal lines indicate the 95% CI for the effect of vitamin C and the square in the middle of the horizontal line indicates the point estimate of the effect in the particular trial. The diamond shapes indicate the pooled effects on the symptoms and its 95% CI

The 5 POAF trials in Iran found a 51% decrease in the incidence of AF and the 4 POAF trials in Greece, Slovenia, and Russia found a 29% decrease. When these 9 trials were pooled to a group of non-US POAF trials, vitamin C decreased the incidence of AF by 44% .

In a direct comparison of the 5 US POAF trials against the 5 Iran POAF trials, there is very strong evidence of heterogeneity with I2=95% . Thus, vitamin C seems to have significantly different effect in these two countries.

    Heart Palpitations And Your Diet

Even if you’re not deficient in any nutrients or consuming excessive amounts of supplements, certain vitamins and minerals can still have the tendency to produce heart palpitations. In these cases, other foods and beverages can increase the levels of specific nutrients in your body. For example, the consumption of can increase your body’s calcium levels.

While collagen heart palpitations are unlikely, hypercalcemia-related palpitations are not uncommon. According to the Mayo Clinic, excessive calcium can cause fainting, arrhythmias and other heart problems. Hypercalcemia also has the potential to produce kidney, gastrointestinal and cognitive side effects.

If you are experiencing heart palpitations regularly but are consuming a relatively healthy diet, you may want to consult your nutritionist or doctor. They can assess you for abnormally high or low levels of vitamins or minerals. Some people, such as those with gastrointestinal problems or other secondary health issues, may require more nutrients than average.
