Can You Use Niacinamide With Retinol And Vitamin C

Do I Need Retinol Or Niacinamide

Are You Using Niacinamide, Vitamin C & Retinols WRONG? ft. DECIEM/The Ordinary!

Consider using niacinamide if you have either highly-sensitive skin or begin to experience some of the more common negative side effects of retinol on skin . Because retinol is more concentrated, you might try niacinamide first if you already have natural skin sensitivities and you havent tried retinol yet.

Can I Use Hyaluronic Acid With Niacinamide And Retinol

Yes! Hyaluronic acid and niacinamide are both water-soluble ingredients that offer intense hydration to the skin surface. Although they offer similar benefits, they are effective to use together, starting off with hyaluronic acid to draw moisture into the skin resulting in a plumped, hydrated barrier, follow this with niacinamide to help regulate sebum production and restore balance. You can use them both twice a day which will keep the skin at its healthiest state resulting in any retinol formula you apply in the evenings will absorb quickly and show fast results. If you are wanting to know more about how to layer hyaluronic acid, niacinamide and retinol, check out our blog post.

Can You Combine Niacinamide And Vitamin C

Yes, you can either mix them together or use them separately. Research shows that it is beneficial to use both in your skincare routine. Since both niacinamide and vitamin c have similar effects on the skin, so the two can work together to renew and repair your skin. If combined, you can use them in layers. It doesnt matter which ingredient comes first.

The best thing is to use a natural serum that contains both niacinamide and vitamin C in an organic, vegan formula, such as in Plant Mothers Vitamin C serum.

Whats more important is the formulation of niacinamide and vitamin c products you use. Serums are better because theyre typically packed with nutrients. They should always come as a first step after cleaning your skin. This is because serums contain the highest amount of nutrients so your skin needs to soak them in directly. Other textures, such as creams and moisturizers, come after the serum.

What Does Niacinamide Do

Niacinamide helps rebuild healthy skin cells, helps build keratin, and contributes to a stronger lipid barrier, allowing skin to retain moisture better. It has also been known to enhance skin elasticity, improve skin tone, and it acts as an antioxidant to fight free radicals in skin and reduce inflammation.

Niacinamide helps with several issues, including:

  • Signs of aging skin
  • Damage caused by the sun

What Does Niacinamide Do For The Skin

Niacinamide is largely considered one of the best skin care ingredients for reducing the signs of hyperpigmentation, dark spots, and acne scarring. It can also increase skins radiance, while helping to support the natural skin barrier that protects against environmental stressors and increase moisture retention.

Additionally, niacinamide helps stabilize oil production to clear congestion and improve the appearance of irritation and inflammation. Together, these benefits can help your complexion look brighter, clearer, and more even.

Should You Use Niacinamide Before Or After Retinol

How to Layer Active Ingredients: Niacinamide, Vitamin C, AHA/BHA, Retinols & More!

Whether you use niacinamide before or after retinol will be largely determined by what type of product you are using. Generally speaking, as niacinamide is water-based and retinol is oil-based, niacinamide would usually be better of being applied before retinol.

This is because water-based ingredients are absorbed into your skin faster than oil-based ingredients.

However, the research studies demonstrated that applying niacinamide after retinol was effective.

In this case, the niacinamide was contained within a moisturizer. Overall, it probably doesnt make a huge difference which order you apply niacinamide and retinol as long as both ingredients are able to penetrate your skin.

For example, it would be better to apply niacinamide before retinol if using a niacinamide serum but better to apply a niacinamide-based moisturizer after retinol.

The Evidence For Using Niacinamide And Retinol Together

Research suggests that pre-treating skin with niacinamide prior to commencing retinol treatment can increase the skins tolerance towards retinol and reduce thechances of irritation.

In a clinical study, participants applied a moisturizer containing niacinamide to one half of their face and a plain moisturizer to the other half of their face twice-daily for two-weeks.

At the end of this two-week treatment period, each participant was given 0.025% tretinoin to apply to the whole face at night. They were instructed to apply each of the moisturizers to the designated part of their face five-minutes after applying the tretinoin.

The results demonstrated that the side of the face that had been treated with the niacinamide-containing moisturizer tolerated tretinoin better than the side of the face treated with the plain moisturizer. This finding appeared to be down to the improved skin barrier function observed with the use of the niacinamide-containing moisturizer.

Not only can niacinamide help reduce the irritation potential of retinol, but it may also help improve the effects of retinol by facilitating the increased rate of skin cell turnover.

This is due to the fact that dead skin cells are held together by structures called corneo-desmosomes that need to be broken down in order for the skin cells to be shed from the surfaceof your skin.

Either way, niacinamide, and retinol, together, make a perfect pair!

Whats The Order Of Application

As a general rule of thumb, apply in order of thickness, starting with the thinnest and working your way up, explains Mraz Robinson.

She has a few caveats for specific combinations too: If using vitamin C and a physical filter sunscreen, she recommends applying the vitamin C first, then your sunscreen. When using hyaluronic acid and retinol, apply retinol first, then hyaluronic acid.

Niacinamide And Retinol Together

Niacinamide is one of those skincare ingredients that just seems to do everything! Its anti-aging, reduces pigmentation, fights acne, reduces facial redness, and hydrates skin.

The latter of which particularly makes it an ideal companion to retinol.

However, while some research suggests that retinol can increase skin hydration, it often initially causes irritation by damaging your skins barrier and increasing the amount of water lost from your skin.

Thats where niacinamide comes in!

Niacinamide is able to stabilize your skins barrier function, reducing the amount of water lost, and increasing overall hydration. It is thought that this hydrating effect is due to the fact that niacinamide increases the number of natural lipids within your stratum corneum .

The stratum corneum has a brick and mortar like structure where the lipids fill the gaps between the skin cells to create a barrier.

Benefits Of Using Vitamin C

Vitamin C is a powerful natural antioxidant that provides the following benefits:

  • Protects the skin against environmental pollution
  • Brightens skin tone and helps fade scars and dark spots
  • Assists with collagen production this makes skin appear younger
  • Treats UV damage caused by the sun

While its usually clear if a skin product contains Vitamin C, the ingredient also goes by other names which you can look out for:

  • L-ascorbic acid this is the purest chemical form of Vitamin C on the market. Note that people with sensitive skin can react to using the synthetic Vitamin C. It can cause dryness, redness, and stinging.
  • Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate & Ascorbyl Palmitate both are gentler versions of a synthetic Vitamin C.
  • Natural, plant-based Vitamin C should come from the following botanicals: Kakadu Plum, Prickly Pear, Maracuja, Cloudberries, and Hibiscus, among others.

Should You Worry About Niacinamide Turning Into Niacin

Vitamin C may be finicking, but Niacinamide isnt. Niacinamide is an amide and those are tough. They dont go bad when you expose them to light, air or heat, like other antioxidants do.

Thats why you need a LOT of heat to trigger the reactions mentioned above. You can heat Niacinamide up to 120 °C WITHOUT Niacin forming.

Of course, the more heat Niacinamide is exposed to, the faster the conversion occurs. But, at home, you NEVER expose Niacinamide to those temperatures.

At home, you store your Niacinamide lotions and serums at room temperatures. Thats around 25 °C . How long does it take for the conversion to occur at this temperature?

If the solution has an acidic ph, itll take 6 weeks to convert only 1% of Niacinamide into Niacin. If the solution uses thickeners , the conversion occurs even more slowly.

For most people this isnt a problem. The amount of Niacin formed under normal conditions is so tiny, you wont even notice it.

If your skin is super sensitive, then even this tiny amount will be enough to trigger flushing and tingling. This isnt dangerous, but I still recommend you avoid this combo.

Either way, you can always store your Niacinamide lotions and potions in a cool place. Thisll slow down the conversion even more.

So can you use salicylic acid with retinol? And what about retinol and AHA?

No research demonstrates or concludes that AHA or BHA exfoliants deactivate or lessen the effectiveness of retinol when used together. Yet still, it’s one of those myths that gets repeated so often, that even dermatologists tend to believe rather than question it.

The claim about retinol not working with AHA or BHA exfoliants began with a misunderstanding about how skincare ingredients work together, and how each affects the structure of the skin. So let’s dig a little deeper…

Vitamin C + Niacinamide

Niacinamide is a base and vitamin C is an acid. So in a perfect world of chemistry, an acid and a base should neutralize in solution and cancel each other out right? Not always! It depends on the type of solution, the pH, temperature, and other factors. RELATED:The Best Skin Brightening IngredientsThe reality is that niacinamide is extremely stable. It takes A LOT of energy for it to react with anything. This means it wont react with vitamin C, so there is no risk of neutralization. Not to mention, in a cosmetic formulation there are many other ingredients that are at play. The chances of niacinamide and vitamin C interacting with each other and forming a bond that cancels each other out are quite slim. This means you can use niacinamide and vitamin C together without any problem. Each of these ingredients on their own can help address dark spots and uneven skin tone, and when used together, they will still work just as effectively and sometimes even better.
