Do Prenatal Vitamins Make You Lose Weight

Can Prenatals Increase My Fertility

Do vitamins make you gain weight

Taking your prenatal vitamin wont make you any more likely to get pregnant. This one is just a myth were happy to bust.

Prenatal vitamins will, however, make it significantly more likely that you experience a healthy pregnancy. They significantly reduce the likelihood of neural tube defects. Their use is also associated with a lower risk of miscarriage. They are a key safety net in preventing pregnancy complications that result from nutrient deficits, such as low birth weight or premature birth. So, we recommend that you add prenatals into your TTC journey these can include vitamins and fertility supplements such as iron, folate, or DHA supplements, but dont expect them to be magic fertility pills.

Youre Trying To Get Pregnant

One of the main nutrients in prenatal vitamins is folic acid, which many women dont get enough naturally, even if theyre eating a healthy diet. Unfortunately, folic acid deficiency has been linked to birth defectsand potentially low birthweights in some infants, so making sure mom is getting enough is very important. Prenatal vitamins also commonly include the omega-3 fatty acid, docosahexaenoic acid , which can help with brain development and vision. While fish is also a good source of omega-3 fatty acid, there is concern regarding fish consumption and mercury toxicity while pregnant, meaning pregnant women must rely on supplementation to reduce the risk to themselves and their baby/babies.

Will They Make Me Gain Weight

There is no evidence that prenatal vitamins make you gain weight. Most pregnant women gain about 25-35 pounds throughout their pregnancy, whether they use a prenatal vitamin or not. And since vitamins contain zero calories, the weight gain is likely due to the pregnancy itself.

The iron in prenatal vitamins can cause constipation and bloating, making your clothes feel tighter. But no one can definitively proclaim them as causing you to gain weight.

When experiencing constipation and bloating, I recommend that moms increase fiber and fluids, but if thats not enough, they can take docusate sodium.

How Coffee Helps To Mobilize Fat From The Fat Tissues

Caffeine helps in stimulating your nervous system, which later sends direct signals to the fat cells alerting them to break down fat. Caffeine also increases your blood levels of the hormone called epinephrine which is also called Adrenaline.

Epinephrine moves through the blood, to the fat tissues and send signals to break down fats and release them into the blood.

This is the process by which caffeine helps to mobilize fat from the fat tissues, making it available to be used as free fatty acids in the blood.

When Should You Start Taking Prenatal Vitamins

Pin on Weight Loss Supplements

Doctors and health care professionals recommend prenatal vitamins one to three months before conception.

Of course, pregnancy doesnt always go to plan. Therefore, you should start taking prenatal pills while trying to get pregnant.

Folic acid will prevent congenital disabilities during the first few weeks of pregnancy, even when you know youre pregnant.

Consuming too much folic acid each day can have the side effect of masking a vitamin B-12 deficiency. Also, consuming too much iron causes health problems like nausea, constipation, and diarrhea.

What Nutrients Are In Prenatal Vitamins

The vitamin aisle is brimming with different prenatal formulas. Most include the following:

  • Vitamin B-12
  • Iron

All are good things a woman needs, so they should be great for making healthy hair grow faster, right?

This is the common rationale for taking prenatals for hair health. But not so fast. While its true that all women need these nutrients, the level of need is determined primarily by age, and most Americans who are not pregnant can meet these needs easily by eating a balanced diet with the possible enhancement of a daily multivitamin.

During pregnancy, perhaps the most talked-about ingredient is folic acid. Folic acid or folate is an essential B-9 vitamin thats required for new cell production. Folic acid generates new cells, including the keratinization of hair during the active growth phase. Some sources even report that high levels of this b vitamin in the blood help to prevent premature graying of the hair.

Pregnancy does often trigger folate deficiency, so taking a prenatal vitamin as a hair care strategy would seem to make sense for the benefits of folic acid.

Most people believe that it is best to start taking prenatal vitamins as soon as you learn that you are pregnant, it is actually ideal to start 90 days prior to conception.

But of course, no one really knows when you will get pregnant until you get pregnant.

This is why there are doctors who recommend women take these vitamins regularly, especially if they are trying to conceive.

But what if you didnt take prenatal vitamins before getting pregnant?

Dont worry too much about it. There are still plenty of women who havent done this and still have healthy babies.

The important thing is that once you learn you are pregnant, you start taking these vitamins.

You can pay a visit to your doctor to learn which prenatal vitamin is right for you.

What Is Folic Acid

Folic acid is a B vitamin that every cell in your body needs for healthy growth and development. Taking folic acid before and during early pregnancy can help prevent birth defects of the brain and spine called neural tube defects . Some studies show that taking folic acid may help prevent heart defects and birth defects in your babys mouth .

  • Before pregnancy take a vitamin supplement with 400 mcg of folic acid every day.
  • Take a vitamin supplement with 400 mcg of folic acid each day, even if youre not trying to get pregnant.
  • During pregnancy, take a prenatal vitamin each day that has 600 mcg of folic acid in it.

Check the product label to see how much folic acid is in it.

If youre at high risk for having a baby with an NTD, talk to your provider about how you can safely take 4,000 mcg of folic acid each day to help prevent an NTD. Start taking 4,000 mcg at least 3 months before you get pregnant and through the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. Youre at high risk if:

  • Youve had a pregnancy with an NTD in the past.
  • You or your partner has an NTD.
  • Your partner has a child with an NTD.

Dont take several multivitamins or prenatal vitamins. You can get too much of other nutrients, which may be harmful to your health. Your provider can help you figure out the best and safest way for you to get the right amount of folic acid.

Do Prenatal Vitamins Have Any Side Effects

How to Safely Lose Weight While Pregnant

The ingredient thats most likely to cause gastrointestinal side effects is iron, which may cause indigestion and constipation. There are different iron preparations available, so women who experience these effects with one vitamin may want to try a different vitamin that has a slower-release form of iron.

Other vitamins dont necessarily have side effects, but may be harmful if too much is ingested. Too much vitamin A can have harmful effects on the fetus, but is fine when taken as beta-carotene, a plant-based precursor thats safe. Too much iodine and fat-soluble vitamins may also be harmful.

Finally, prenatal vitamins that pack in all these nutrients may be bigsome women find them hard to swallow and they may cause gagging. Using a chewable alternative may be an option.

This advice applies to most low-risk women and pregnancies. There are certain cases , where the nutritional needs are different. These women should contact their prenatal care providers about the best regimen of nutritional supplement to use.

Why We Advise To Stay Away From Prenatal Gummies

After many hours of research, we discovered many studies on how effective is the potency of vitamins and minerals in the gummy supplements. Gummy vitamins can contain unreliable amounts than what is reported and lack certain essential vitamins and minerals than what is reported on their supplement facts label.

As stated by a Times.com article, Its a lot harder to make a good gummy than it is to make a tablet or capsule, says Dr. Tod Cooperman, president of ConsumerLab.com, a private company that conducts safety and quality testing of consumer products. In a 2017 supplement analysis, ConsumerLab.com found that four out of five gummy products contained more or less than their listed amounts of ingredients.

Analysis found that gummy vitamins were the most likely kind of supplement to fail testing. Many companies seem to have trouble controlling the amounts of ingredients in each gummy, Cooperman says. He stated to solve this problem gummy makers spray vitamins and nutrients onto the outside of the finished candylike a coating. There are also stability problems, meaning the gummies can lose potency over time. He explains, This leads some manufacturers to put in a lot more of certain vitamins than labeled to ensure the product provides at least 100% of the labeled amounts throughout its shelf life.

What Will Happen If I Fail To Take Prenatal Vitamins

If you fail to use prenatal vitamins, you will be putting your baby as well as yourself at risk. The fetus will take what it requires from you first. This leaves your body depleted of nutrients that it needs to function.

In the case of total depletion, it could cause serious health problems. For instance, when calcium intake becomes insufficient, you will lose your bone density. Furthermore, less Iron may also cause you to feel weak or dizzy. The condition may cause falling, and in the process hurt either the baby or even yourself. Similarly, if you also have little minerals for the baby, it will lead to complications.

Though we encourage healthy balanced diets, its intelligent to not only depend on your foods alone. You may need supplements that both of you require during pregnancy.

An Insight Into The Weight Gaining Theory

If you take in more calories compared to usage levels, then weight gain is inevitable. It is no different whether you are expectant or not. Prenatal vitamins have little calories. There is no data showing that prenatal vitamins cause weight gain.

As pregnant women, however, the body requires more calories, which is normal. An expectant mom needs around 2000 calories daily. Pregnancy only needs the addition of about 300 calories per day.

Simple Steps For Maintaining Healthy Weight Loss After Pregnancy

Remember these tips may not work for every new mom. Review the list below with a qualified medical professional before committing to any major change in your diet or activity routine.

  • Focus on making small, simple changes to your diet. Dont over-restrict or beat yourself up for indulging once in a while. Studies have shown that restrictive dieting after giving birth can add further pressure and stress to new mothers and can damage self-esteem.3
  • Get your exercise, but dont overdo it. Simple, low-impact activities such as walking, yoga or Pilates can help you stay active and regain muscle strength. As you get stronger, you can increase the intensity but dont push yourself to the point of strain or injury.
  • Be consistent. If you want to see real changes, find ways to improve your nutrition and activity level that you can stick with. Often people fail at diets and exercise regimens because they require major and unsustainable lifestyle changes. Even if your goal is as simple as taking a walk around your neighborhood three times a week, its still a great habit and will help you achieve and maintain your long-term weight goals.
  • Consider breastfeeding if you can. Breastfeeding offers benefits for babies and moms. Although many breastfeeding mothers actually experience weight gain in the first months after giving birth , one study found that pregnancy weight can begin to taper off after about six months of breastfeeding.4
