Whole vs. Skim: Which Milk Is Better For You?

Does nonfat milk provide the same vitamins and minerals as whole milk? Jayne

Yes, nonfat milk provides the same vitamins and minerals as whole milk with no fat. Because the fat portion of whole milk does not contain calcium, you can lose the fat without losing any calcium.

Reduced-fat , low-fat , and nonfat milk have vitamin A and vitamin D added, since these vitamins are lost when the fat is removed. Natural levels of vitamin D are low, so most milk producers add vitamin D to whole milk. Check the nutrition facts label to learn more about vitamins and minerals in milk.

Two Percent Tops Whole

Two percent refers to how much fat remains in the milk, but the percentage is based on amount of fat by weight. Whole milk retains all the natural fat and is 3.5 percent fat by weight. The fat can be removed during processing to produce lower-fat brands. As its name suggests, 2 percent milk retains 2 percent of the milk fat by weight. Two percent milk is also called reduced-fat milk. About 60 percent of milk fat consists of saturated fats that increase levels of cholesterol. It’s healthier to choose milk with reduced fat because it also contains less saturated fat.

Does Skim Milk Contain Vitamins Ade And K

Milk contains the fat soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K. The content level of fat soluble vitamins in dairy products depends on the fat content of the product. Reduced fat , lowfat , and skim milk must be fortified with vitamin A to be nutritionally equivalent to whole milk. Fortification of all milk with vitamin D is voluntary. Milk contains small amounts of vitamins E and K and is not considered a major source of these vitamins in the diet. Minerals in Milk. Minerals have

Reduced-fat milk and skim milk have fewer calories and higher amounts of vitamins than whole milk . They also have less saturated fat, which has been shown in studies to raise your “bad” cholesterol and put you at a higher risk for heart disease. But reduced-fat milk and skim milk often contain more added sugar than whole milk, which is also a no-no.

While skim and reduced-fat milk might seem appealing to those who are trying to lose weight, there is a lot of debate as to whether they are more beneficial than whole milk for weight loss.

  • The large amount of added sugar in skim and reduced-fat milk is a problem for some.
  • Others take issue with possible health implications of the fortification process.
  • Studies say the saturated fat in whole milk might help you feel more satisfied and full longer than drinking reduced-fat or skim milk.

Calories, Carbs, and SugarsThe first thing that we will compare between almond milk vs whole milk is their calories. One reason why many people prefer almond milk is because it contains significantly lower calories. Potential Increased Satiety Without Weight Gain

We are finding that the total dietary fat content may not matter if nutrient-dense foods are the focus, says McDaniel. In a recent clinical study, researchers found that people who followed a high-fat, low-carbohydrate diet lost the same amount of weight as those on a low-fat, high-carb diet. In an observational study, women who had higher consumption of whole-fat, but not low-fat dairy foods had less weight gain. As long as calorie levels generally stay about the same often by lowering carbohydrates to offset increased calories from full-fat dairy people often find increased fullness from whole milk dairy foods, explains McDaniel.

Relax About The Saturated Fat

Whole milk is 3.25% fat. A single cup has 8 grams of fat, including 5 grams of saturated fata substance long vilified as a cause of heart disease. The World Health Organization and the American Heart Association both continue to advise low consumption of saturated fats, but science is challenging the conventional wisdom on this, too.

One meta-analysis, published in 2010 in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, reviewed 21 earlier studies and found no significant evidence for concluding that dietary saturated fat is associated with an increased risk of coronary heart disease or cardiovascular disease. Another, published in 2014 in the Annals of Internal Medicine, reviewed 76 studies and came to a similar conclusion: The evidence did not support a recommendation of low consumption of saturated fats.

A measured interpretation of all this goes back to the old adage: Everything is fine, in moderation. Eat too much of anything and it will probably hurt you, especially because it is most likely replacing other, more healthful foods.

What really is the bottom line, says Keri Gans, a registered dietician nutritionist and author of The Small Change Diet, is we need to look at the total diet.

In other words, if youre eating bacon at breakfast, you probably shouldnt drink a glass of whole milk with it, she says.

Tally Of Other Nutrients

The good news is that you can go with reduced fat or fat-free milk without giving up nutrients. Skim, 2 percent and whole milk all have 8 grams of protein in 1 cup and about the same amount of magnesium, zinc and B vitamins. A 1-cup serving of all types of milk also supplies almost 30 percent of your daily calcium and almost half of your daily allowance of vitamin B-12. As the percentage of fat goes down, you also lose calories. One cup of whole milk has 149 calories and 2 percent contains 122 calories.

Soya isoflavones have attracted a great deal of research and some studies even suggest that certain women with a soya-rich diet may experience a lower risk of breast cancer. This is, in part, because isoflavones are known as phyto-oestrogens, which means they mimic a weak form of the hormone oestrogen in the body. Some women find this helps with peri-menopausal symptoms such as poor mood and hot flushes.

Genetics, our gut microbiota and environmental factors play a huge part in how our bodies react to certain foods, so as yet, we cant say whether a diet rich in phyto-estrogenic foods is beneficial for all women or not.

Whole Milk For Vitamin D

Although 2 percent milk has more added vitamin D than whole milk, it’s better absorbed in whole milk. A study involving children, ages 1 to 6, compared the effects of whole milk to those of low-fat milk. Results, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, indicate that the group drinking whole milk had higher levels of vitamin D and lower body mass than those who drank low-fat milk. Researchers speculated that these findings resulted from vitamin D being fat-soluble and perhaps better absorbed when paired with the fat in whole milk. Also, whole milk is more filling, which could result in a lower calorie intake for weight maintenance.

Pros: “The main benefit of skim milk is that it supplies a high amount of protein, calcium, and vitamin D for a relatively low amount of calories,” says McGrane. “It’s a good option for anyone who is trying to reduce their calorie intake, while still getting a sufficient amount of calcium and protein.”

Cons: McGrane says that because of its lower fat and calorie content, it’s not as satiating as whole milk.

Is Vitamin D Milk The Same As Whole Milk

Okay, so bottom line is that vitamin D milk and whole milk are the same product. The majority of whole milk have been fortified with additional vitamin D.

It is just a different way of marketing them to different niches.

For regular everyday people whole milk would be used. But, for health nuts, the term vitamin D milk sounds more nutritious and appealing. But again, its exactly the same thing.

That being said, there are a few exceptions where the milk hasnt been fortified with vitamin D, in which case it cannot be labeled as vitamin D milk.

This term only and without exception applies to milk that has been fortified.

It is also important to mention that sometimes reduced-fat and skim milk are also fortified with vitamin D.

But, it would clearly state on the label which type of milk you are buying . And, vitamin D milk is usually only whole milk.

It’s All About A Balanced Diet

“Focusing on low-fat is predominantly based on the assumption that saturated fat increases LDL cholesterol,” study author Mahshid Dehghan told TIME. “But dairy contains many other components amino acids, vitamin K, calcium, magnesium. They can be fermented and have probiotics. We should not focus on a single nutrient.”

That being said, there is one nutrient that comes in significantly different amounts based on the amount of fat. Milk contains omega-3 fatty acids, which have been associated with heart and brain health, as well as a reduced risk of cancers, according to Healthline. Fat-free milk comes with 2.5 milligrams of omega-3s, compared to 183 mg in whole milk. The full-fat version is the clear winner here.

Milk does contain saturated fat and it is wise to regulate how much saturated fat you consume daily. For a 2,000 calorie diet, the recommendation is to limit saturated fat to 20 grams per day, according to Harvard Health Publishing. One cup of whole milk contains about 8 grams of fat, of which about 4.5 grams is saturated fat. So, monitoring your whole milk consumption as part of your overall diet is wise.

Whole Milk For Weight Management

When choosing between whole milk and 2 percent for your weight-loss plan, you may easily assume that low-fat milk is better. But even though 2 percent milk has less fat and fewer calories than whole milk, there’s evidence suggesting full-fat milk might be better for weight management. A study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition in 2016 found that a group of middle-aged women with a greater intake of whole-fat milk had a lower risk of being overweight or obese. Those reduced risks were not seen in the group with low-fat dairy intake.

Scour the dairy shelves in your supermarket and, as well as cows milk, you can find goats milk, several soya options and milk-style drinks made from nuts. Theres a huge demand for these products, as four out of 10 British households now use an non-dairy alternative to milk in hot drinks, cereal or cooking.

One reason is that some of us find cows milk difficult to digest, and blame symptoms like bloating, wind and diarrhoea on dairy. This may be because low levels of the enzyme lactase make it hard to digest the lactose in dairy products. Other people may be intolerant to cows milk protein or have a more serious allergy to dairy.

Milk allergy is also one of the most common childhood food allergies, affecting about 2-3 per cent of infants in the UK, with symptoms ranging from skin conditions to digestive problems.

Skimmed, semi or full-fat?

Latest research reveals that skimmed milk may not necessarily be the healthiest option. Yes, its lower in fat and calories than whole milk, and marginally higher in calcium, but some experts suggest that the saturated fat in dairy may not be a problem in terms of heart health. In fact, by drinking skimmed we may be missing out on fat-soluble nutrients like vitamins A and E.

Dairy foods like milk, yoghurt and cheese are not a threat to good health if had as part of a well-balanced nutritious diet.
