Iron supplements can aggravate the symptoms of nausea and vomiting in pregnancy. But unfortunately, the majority of prenatal supplements contain iron, because it is essential later on in pregnancy due to the increase in blood volume.

In the first trimester however, iron supplementation is usually unnecessary – especially if a woman has followed a preconception care plan and boosted her iron stores prior to conceiving.

The pregnancy hormone, hCG, stimulates a womans thyroid in the first trimester. This is also known to aggravate the symptoms of morning sickness.

The recommended daily intake of iodine in pregnancy is 220 micrograms. This should come from a woman’s diet and she can supplement as well, however, supplementing with this amount may be too high for some women in the first trimester. It is possible that her thyroid could become overstimulated and lead to an increase in nausea and/or vomiting. Therefore, the World Health Organisation recommends that all pregnant women should supplement their diet with 150 micrograms of iodine daily.

You’re Taking Your Vitamins On An Empty Stomach

This is a no-no, says Dr. Sonpal. When you take a vitaminregardless of the typeit causes some minor irritation in your otherwise empty stomach. It typically takes two to three hours for the vitamins to pass into the intestines, at which time there will be no more irritation and no more nausea.

If you take your vitamins with an actual meal, you avoid the issue altogether, says Dr. Sonpal. Not hungry for a full meal, but want to take your vitamins while you remember? Enjoy a small snack with your vitamins to avoid any feelings of nausea.

What Are Prenatal Vitamins

Prenatal vitamins are specially-formulated supplements that help women stay healthy during pregnancy.

There’s a huge range of pills on the market, but most prenatal brands contain a combination of vitamins and minerals that have been researched and proven to have benefits during pregnancy.

Because pregnancy involves so many changes to the body, it’s important to make sure you’re getting the right nutrients in as it’ll make you’ll feel better, and it helps meet the baby’s needs as they grow.

You might be wondering, but what if I eat all the right foods? While eating well is still important, according to peer-reviewed studies, our modern diets just aren’t enough.

Food nowadays tends to lack the recommended micronutrients â one study states that 33 per cent of the women interviewed were low in folate, 40 per cent were low in calcium, and more than 50 per cent were low in iron and zinc during their pregnancies.

Another study involving Canadian women also found that many of the participants had folate levels below the recommended amount.

Basically, we can’t rely on a healthy diet or food sources alone to get the right nutrients to the baby during pregnancy.

Play Around With The Supplement Doses

If your prenatal vitamin consistently makes you feel nauseated, check the labelthe recommended amount of iron per the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the National Institutes of Health is 27 mg per day. If your prenatal has more than that, try switching to one with a lower dose . If that still doesnt help, ask your provider whether you can switch to a prenatal vitamin without iron during your first trimester and get iron from food sources instead.

As mentioned earlier, increasing vitamin B6 intake is associated with decreased nausea and vomiting. If your prenatal vitamin doesnt have vitamin B6 or has a low dose, try switching to one that has a higher dose.
