Vitamin C: Is Your Child Getting Enough

Vitamin C is the darling of preventing the common cold or is it?

Surprisingly, little research has validated the role of vitamin C in preventing or treating the common cold however, there are plenty of reasons to make sure your child is getting his or her daily dose.

Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, is a water-soluble vitamin required for your childs health.

It helps with the absorption of iron from foods, acts as a protector to cells, protects the body from bruising, helps heal wounds and keep your childs gums healthy, and produces collagen .

As humans, we arent able to make vitamin C ourselves, so we have to obtain it from food or other sources, such as supplements. As a water-soluble vitamin, vitamin C isnt stored in the body so daily consumption is required.

Vitamin C is naturally present in citrus foods, but is also widely available in the supplement aisle.

How Much vitamin C is Needed for Young Children?

The Recommended Daily Allowance for vitamin C is as follows:

According to national intake data provided by the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey , vitamin C intakes among children are adequate. However, the most recent 2015 Dietary Guidelines for Americans calls out vitamin C as an under-consumed nutrient.

The mention of nutrient deficiencies might conjure up images of developing nations, but the typical American diet also can leave big nutritional gaps. Depending on lifestyle and eating habits, some nutrients may be lacking in the general population.

The 2020-2025 Dietary Guidelines for Americans identified several nutrients that are underconsumed in the United States, including potassium, calcium, and vitamin D. Low intakes of iron have also been found for adolescent girls. And women who are pregnant may not be able to consume enough iron from foods to meet the higher amount needed during pregnancy. Getting nutrients from foods is preferred, but there may be times when a supplement is needed. Be sure to talk with a health care provider before taking any dietary supplements.

For some of these nutrients, deficiency is rare. However, inadequate amounts over time may cause your body to develop symptoms. These should also be discussed with your doctor or another health care provider. Here are a few examples of nutrients that some Americans do not consume enough of, as well as foods and beverages which contain them:

Iron

Calcium

Vitamin D

Vitamin C

Which Of These Underconsumed In The United States

Asked by: Arnulfo Osinski DVM

In the report, calcium, potassium, dietary fiber, and vitamin D were all identified as underconsumed in the U.S., which means you might not be getting the amount your body needs to function at its best. The good news: Boosting your intake of these nutrients is simplenot to mention delicious!

‘shortfall Nutrients’ Vs ‘nutrients Of Public Health Concern’

Let’s break it down: The USDA includes a list of under-consumed nutrients in the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, a set of national nutritional recommendations that’s updated every five years. These under-consumed nutrients, also known as “shortfall nutrients,” represent those that are “consumed by many individuals in amounts below the Estimated Average Requirement or Adequate Intake levels,” per the 2015-2020 guidelines.

The shortfall nutrients include potassium, dietary fiber, choline, magnesium, calcium and vitamins A, D, E and C. Iron is also considered a shortfall nutrient among women ages 19 to 50, who have higher iron needs than other groups.

While these ten nutrients are under-consumed across the board, only four â calcium, potassium, fiber and vitamin D â are classified as “nutrients of public health concern,” since their low intakes are linked to critical health problems, like high blood pressure for low potassium and bone fractures for low vitamin D.

But just because the majority of Americans don’t eat enough of these shortfall nutrients doesn’t mean we’re all suffering from full-blown vitamin deficiencies.

“Being ‘short’ on a nutrient does not necessarily mean that a person is deficient in that nutrient,” explains Jackie Topol, RDN, a New York City-based registered dietitian and culinary nutritionist. “However, consistent inadequate intake may ultimately lead to deficiency.”
