What Does Vitamin C Serum Do
To understand how vitamin C works, you first have to understand free radicals. These natural molecules arent bad on their own, but they can become a problem when they build up. In high numbers, they can break cells down over time, contributing to illness and aging.
Antioxidants help fight free radicals, though, keeping everything in balance. Vitamin C is one such antioxidant. When used on the skin, it can combat signs of aging. It decreases hyperpigmentation, evens out your skin tone, reduces wrinkles, and protects your skin from sun damage.

High amounts of this chemical can damage the walls of the blood vessels and result in the cholesterol build up.These two B vitamins can help strengthen the vessels and lower the risk of cardiovascular diseases.Vitamin B3 can also help regulate healthy levels of cholesterol in the body. May Reduce Symptoms Of Anxiety Or Depression
While B-complex vitamin supplements are not a cure for mental health issues, they may help improve symptoms of depression or anxiety.
A study in 60 adults with depression showed that treatment with a B-complex vitamin for 60 days led to significant improvements in depression and anxiety symptoms, compared to a placebo .
B vitamins may also enhance treatment response when given in combination with antidepressant medication.
One study found that supplementing patients with a vitamin containing B12, B6 and folic acid led to a more enhanced and sustained antidepressant response over one year, compared to a placebo .
Note that low blood levels of certain B vitamins, including B12, B6 and folate, have been linked to an increased risk of depression, which is why its important to rule out nutrient deficiencies if you are experiencing symptoms of depression (
If you are deficient in B vitamins, you may need to supplement with higher doses to correct the deficiency.
For these reasons, its important to choose a B-complex supplement based on your individual requirements for each B vitamin.
Speak with your doctor regarding your specific nutrient needs based on your age and health.

Helps Break Down Carbohydrates
B vitamin complex supplements can help your body digest and break down food when youre carbo-loading. Vitamin B1 is necessary for breaking down simple carbs, while the B5 vitamin helps turn carbs into energy and break down fats.On the other hand, you need vitamins B2 and B3 to completely break down complex carbs into bioavailable products. The vitamins break down the carbs before absorption so the body can metabolize them faster.

Vitamin C Insufficiency Conditions
Numerous environmental and health conditions can have an impact on vitamin C status. In this section we discuss examples which also have a link with impaired immunity and increased susceptibility to infection. For example, exposure to air pollution containing oxidants, such as ozone and nitrogen dioxide, can upset the oxidant-antioxidant balance within the body and cause oxidative stress . Oxidative stress can also occur if antioxidant defenses are impaired, which may be the case when vitamin C levels are insufficient . Air pollution can damage respiratory tract lining fluid and increase the risk of respiratory disease, particularly in children and the elderly who are at risk of both impaired immunity and vitamin C insufficiency . Vitamin C is a free-radical scavenger that can scavenge superoxide and peroxyl radicals, hydrogen peroxide, hypochlorous acid, and oxidant air pollutants . The antioxidant properties of vitamin C enable it to protect lung cells exposed to oxidants and oxidant-mediated damage caused by various pollutants, heavy metals, pesticides, and xenobiotics .
The Recommended Dietary Allowance
The recommended dietary allowance for vitamin C is based on the amount of vitamin C intake necessary to maintain neutrophil vitamin C concentration with minimal urinary excretion of vitamin C and is proposed to provide sufficient antioxidant protection . The recommended intake for smokers is 35 mg/day higher than for nonsmokers, because smokers are under increased oxidative stress from the toxins in cigarette smoke and generally have lower blood concentrations of vitamin C .Table 2. How We Tested Vitamin C Serums
Ive been testing 26 vitamin C serums for months on my dry to sensitive skin. Though and confirmed by Dr. Patel using a vitamin C-infused moisturizer is a less irritating formulation than a serum, I found 18 of the best serums that didnt irritate my skin, highlighted pros and cons to help guide your decision and a list of some serums we tested that didnt make the cut.
That said, my skin has never been brighter.
Aside from switching off from one vitamin C serum to the next, I didnt use any new cleansers, moisturizers or face masks. Ive used my two favorite products, as of late, with each test: Alpyn Beautys Creamy Bubbling Cleanser with Fruit Enzymes and AHAs and the brands PlantGenius Melt Moisturizer.
Here are some helpful things to note before reading our tried-and-true favorites:
Everyone has different skin types: As highlighted by Dr. Patel above, skincare ingredients depend on the skin type itself. This review is based on my skin though, using Dr. Patels expertise as a compass, we grouped some of our favorites into other skin types.
You dont have to splurge to confer benefits: The best vitamin C serum isnt necessarily the most expensive, per Dr. Patel. A lot of times the extra cost of a skincare product has to do with exorbitant or fancy packaging, with packaging not being a good indicator of the quality of product inside.
