Which Form Of Vitamin D Is Best Absorbed

Is Vitamin D2 The Same As Vitamin D3

The Best Way to Absorb VITAMIN D (Learn what the Best Sources Are?)

Vitamin D2 and D3 are slightly different. Both forms raise your blood vitamin D levels, and both can treat and prevent rickets from vitamin D deficiency. However, studies have found that vitamin D3 effectively raises blood vitamin D levels for a longer period than vitamin D2.

Additionally, vitamin D2 and D3 are derived from different sources. Vitamin D2 is plant-based. It is made by exposing ergosterol found in yeast to ultraviolet light. Vitamin D2 can also be found in some types of mushrooms. Vitamin D3 is sourced from sheep lanolin. It is made by exposing the lanolin to UV radiation to convert the cholesterol in lanolin to vitamin D3.

Vitamin D supplements can contain either vitamin D2 or D3. However, most over-the-counter preparations contain vitamin D3.

How Will I Know If My Vitamin D Supplements Are Helping Me

If you’re taking vitamin D supplements to treat a deficiency, you should start to feel better within a few weeks. Your doctor will likely check your blood levels after six to eight weeks to make sure the supplements are working.

If you’re taking vitamin D for another reason, such as bone health, it may take longer to see results. Some studies have found that it takes up to two years of regular vitamin D supplementation to see an improvement in bone density.

What Happens When You Take Your Daily Vitamin D3

When you take a Vitamin D supplement, the vitamin passes from your bloodstream into your liver.

From here, it goes to the kidneys where it turns into calcitriol.

It is then released back into your bloodstream and can now enter your bodys cells where it attaches to Vitamin D receptors.

At this point, it can get to work regulating the minerals calcium and phosphorous. Clever stuff!

Vitamin D Status In Git

The fate of the vitamin D in GIT is monitored by those factors which have been intimately involved with major lipid . These involve emulsification, dissolution in micelles, diffusion through the stagnant water layer and penetration across enterocytes membranes. The future of vitamin D in GIT seems to be a multistep process including physiochemical as well as enzymatic involvement . The acidic pH of gastric juice may affect the bioavailability of vitamin D. It is apparent that no data available on the susceptibility of major dietary forms of vitamin D to GIT pH conditions. Further, a hypothesis can be made that protein digestive enzymes are also intimately involved in vitamin D absorption as they cleave vitamin D binding proteins present in food and thus facilitate its release. Further, in duodenum digestive enzyme continues the release of vitamin D from food matrix.

Warnings Of Vitamin D And D3

Vitamin D toxicity may occur with excessively high doses. Symptoms could include nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, constipation, dehydration, fatigue, and confusion. Due to the fact that vitamin D is a fat-soluble drug, the effects of vitamin D therapy can last 2 months or more after therapy is discontinued. It is also important to know the vitamin D content of other supplements you may be taking, such as a daily multivitamin. You should not take high doses of vitamin D supplements without your doctors instruction.

What Are The Main Differences Between Vitamin D And D3

The term vitamin D is kind of a misnomer because you will not find anything labeled simply as vitamin D in a pharmacy vitamin aisle. Rather, your choices will be vitamin D2 or vitamin D3 . Generally, when one mentions vitamin D, the implied selection is vitamin D2. For the purpose of this article, when vitamin D is mentioned, it will refer to vitamin D2. The names can be confusing, because many times, patients go into the pharmacy looking for vitamin D and are surprised that there is a D2 and a D3.

Vitamin D comes from plant sources, such as wild mushrooms, as well as fortified foods, such as milk or cereal products. Its strength is typically measured in international units, which is abbreviated as IU on labeling. The 50,000 IU capsules are prescription only, while lower strengths are available over-the-counter. Vitamin D is less expensive to produce and therefore is the form most commonly found in fortified food products.

Vitamin D3 mainly comes from animal sources such as fish oil, fatty fish, liver, and egg yolks. When your skin is exposed to sunlight, it produces vitamin D3. For this reason, it is sometimes referred to as the sunshine vitamin. Its strength is also measured in international units. All forms of vitamin D3 are available over-the-counter.

Is It Best To Get Your Vitamin D From The Sun Definitely Not

David J. Leffell, MD, Yale Medicine dermatologist and chief of Dermatologic Surgery

One of the biggest challenges weve faced in dermatology and in the world of skin cancer prevention has been a lot of misinformation about vitamin D metabolism.

There are claims that one needs to get a certain amount of sun exposure every day in order to produce enough vitamin D to be healthy. Its just not true. The majority of people can get their vitamin D from nutritional supplements and from vitamin D-fortified foods.

There are some people who have advocated for tanning to get vitamin D. But we know that UVB light causes skin cancer and that protecting yourself against it makes sense. As a doctor who treats patients who have melanomas, I want the general public to be advised that under no circumstances can use of a tanning bed or tanning in general be justified on the basis of vitamin D. Take a supplement instead.

Molecular Forms Of Vitamin D: Vitamin D2 Vitamin D3 And 25d

Vitamin D2, vitamin D3 and hydroxylated vitamin D D3) contribute significantly in dietary vitamin D and in combination referred as total dietary vitamin D. Molecular structure is recalled in Fig. 1. The absorption of vitamin D is facilitated by protein mediated transport depending upon its concentration and the affinity of these transporters which may vary depending upon the molecular forms of vitamin D .

How Should You Choose

Rather than worrying about whether a capsule or liquid vitamins will be better absorbed, you should make the decision based on quality, cost and personal preference. Each supplement form has pros and cons. Compared to capsules, liquids may be preferable because:

  • They make it easier to modify doses for children or the elderly.
  • They may be easier for some people with digestive problems due to gastric surgery.
  • They are easier to swallow for people who have trouble taking pills.

The cons of liquids versus capsules include:

  • Liquids may be less stable, which will cause more rapid nutrient losses. This is especially true of vitamin C and folic acid, according to ConsumerLab.com.
  • They may require refrigeration, which can make them less practical.
  • As mentioned, their fast absorption may make them a poor choice for certain nutrients.

As for cost and quality, both liquid and capsule vitamin supplements can be expensive. Often, high-quality vitamins will be more expensive because they contain better ingredients, fewer fillers and may have undergone more rigorous testing. But, this isn’t always the case. Sometimes, lower cost supplements can be just as effective â but again, it’s hard to assess this.

Taking It Late In The Day May Affect Sleep

Research links vitamin D levels to sleep quality.

In fact, several studies associate low levels of vitamin D in your blood to a higher risk of sleep disturbances, poorer sleep quality and reduced sleep duration .

Conversely, one small study suggested that higher blood levels of vitamin D may be linked to lower levels of melatonin the hormone responsible for regulating your sleep cycle in people with multiple sclerosis .

Some anecdotal reports claim that taking vitamin D at night can negatively influence sleep quality by interfering with melatonin production.

However, scientific research to determine how supplementing with vitamin D at night may affect sleep is currently unavailable.

Until studies exist, it may be best to simply experiment and find what works best for you.

Summary

Vitamin D deficiency may negatively impact sleep quality. Some anecdotal reports assert that supplementing with vitamin D at nighttime may interfere with sleep, but scientific data to that effect is unavailable.

Health Implications For Vitamin D Deficiencies

While symptoms are more or less non-existent, the result of a vitamin D deficiency can be more serious. The most common results of vitamin D deficiency are:

  • Rickets ,
  • Osteomalacia , and
  • Osteoporosis .

These issues can lead to bone fractures, which can mean the end of independent living for an elderly person.

Vitamin D deficiency is also blamed for many other health effects not related to our bones. But whether or not vitamin D is actually the cause of these conditions is still unclear.

People living further from the equator, where there are lower UV radiation levels, are at increased risk of:

  • Multiple sclerosis,
  • Schizophrenia, and
  • Depression.

All of these conditions have been linked with vitamin D levels in at least one study. Low levels of vitamin D have also been associated with increased risk of developing colorectal, breast, prostate and other cancers, as well as the metabolic syndrome. In addition, giving vitamin D supplements to people at risk of deficiency has been found to reduce the risk of multiple sclerosis and certain cancers, and prevent falls in the elderly.

But its important to note that many of these findings are based on preliminary research, and some authorities have questioned the benefits of vitamin D for reasons other than bone health and fall prevention. A review by the National Prescribing Service points out that many of the studies are observational, have design limitations, or are contradictory.

Are Liquid Vitamins Absorbed Better Than Capsules

What’s the best form of VITAMIN D?

The supplement industry has grown exponentially in the last decade, evident from the dizzying array of vitamins on store shelves. Pills, powders, capsules, liquid drops, gummies â which is better?

Video of the Day

Manufacturers often claim that liquid vitamins are absorbed better than capsules, but there’s not enough scientific evidence to support that.

Tip

The rate of absorption may matter more than the amount absorbed when it comes to the effectiveness of liquid vitamins versus capsules.

Amount Of Ingested Food In Meal

This factor has not been discussed much in present literature. Recently one study reported the improvement of vitamin D absorption with the largest meal of day and in consequences about a 50% rise of serum level of 25D. The data obtained from this study could be result of either high secretion of digestive enzymes or some specific food components . These results were not reproduced when subjects were served vitamin D with and without food . More supplementary studies are required to understand the effect of food amount on bioavailability of vitamin D.

What Is The Ideal Time To Take It

Taking vitamin D with a meal can enhance its absorption and increase blood levels more efficiently.

However, theres limited research on whether taking it at night or in the morning may be more effective.

The most important steps are to fit vitamin D into your routine and take it consistently to ensure maximum effectiveness.

Try taking it alongside breakfast or with a bedtime snack as long as it doesnt interfere with your sleep.

The key is to find what works for you and stick with it to ensure youre meeting your vitamin D needs.

Summary

Taking vitamin D with a meal can increase its absorption, but studies on specific timing are limited. For best results, experiment with different schedules to find what works for you.

Supplements can be an effective way to boost your blood levels of vitamin D, which is crucial to your health.

Taking vitamin D with food can enhance its effectiveness, as its fat-soluble.

While the best timing has not been established, scientific data to confirm anecdotal reports that supplementing at night may interfere with sleep is unavailable.

Current research suggests you can fit vitamin D into your routine whenever you prefer.

How Does Sunlight Give Us Vitamin D

When we get sunlight on our skin, our body produces a substance called cholecalciferol.

This is then turned into calcidiol and then calcitriol by the liver and kidneys.

Calcitriol is what your Doctor would measure to assess your Vitamin D levels.

There are three ways to get enough Vitamin D:

  • from exposure to enough sunlight on your skin
  • from food sources
  • from a good Vitamin D supplement
  • During sunny months, your body might make excess calcidiol. But it will not go to waste. Any extra will be stored in your body fat as a kind of back up for those grey winter days.

Experts think that just 10 minutes of sunlight on your skin is enough to avoid Vitamin D deficiency. So get outside when you can!

What Type Of Vitamin D Is Best

Essential Stacks Chewable Vitamin D3 K2

Vitamin D comes in two major forms, vitamin D2 and vitamin D3 .

The human body can absorb and process both forms. However, as vitamin D3 occurs naturally as your bodys response to sunlight, its generally considered the preferred form of supplementation.

Vitamin D3 supplements are typically made using lanolin, a type of wax extracted from sheeps wool. However, at BetterYou, we use a plant-origin source of D3 in our Vitamin D1000 Vegan Oral Spray.
