Supplementation After Bariatric Surgery What Will I Need
One of the most important commitments you can make to yourself when you undergo bariatric surgery is a lifelong commitment to taking recommended vitamin and mineral supplements. Unfortunately, you will be unable to rely on meeting your nutritional needs through diet alone once you have surgery regardless of which procedure you choose.
Quality of Supplements
Ingredients in dietary supplements come from all over the world many from China, India, and third-world countries where controls on processing may be inferior to those in the U.S. or Europe. Manufacturers may choose from a variety of sources, forms and grades of nutrients. Accepted standards for most nutrients follow the guidelines set out by the Unites States Pharmacopoeia and National Formulary and exist for more than 2,000 ingredients. If distributors choose to specify that they are using certified ingredients, these designators may appear on labels or may be omitted due to space limitations. If information is not supplied on the label, it becomes the responsibility of the consumer to obtain it.
Form and Delivery Method
- Hard-coated tablets pose the greatest challenge to bariatric surgery patients as they typically break apart with stomach acid and churning. Some capsules are acceptable as they break apart with moisture and heat.

Bariatric Vitamins: Flintstones Vs Gummies Vs Patchmd Vs Chewable
Many bariatric patients question what vitamins to take and really what is the difference between bariatric specific chewable compared to gummies or a generic multi-vitamin. It is important to understand that after any weight loss surgery you will need to take supplements for the rest of your life. Due to your smaller pouch, lack of digestive enzymes and malabsorption, food does not digest the same way as before surgery. The nutrients and food are not absorbed as well as before surgery.

Should I Take Vitamins And Supplements After Weight Loss Surgery
After weight loss surgery, your body may not absorb enough of certain vitamins and minerals specifically, iron, vitamin B12, calcium and vitamin D. Long-term health complications, such as anemia, can develop due to a deficiency of iron or B12 neurological complications, such as memory loss or irritability from a lack of B12 and bone and kidney disease due to changes in the way your body absorbs calcium and vitamin D.
It is important that you take the following vitamins and supplements on a daily basis after weight loss surgery to prevent nutrient deficiencies.
Take a chewable multivitamin daily containing a minimum of 18 mg of iron. Brands that contain this formula include Trader Joe’s, Flintstone and Centrum. Childrens chewable vitamins also can be taken in an adult dose by taking two tablets daily.
Take 1,500 mg calcium citrate or 2,000 mg calcium carbonate daily to prevent calcium deficiency and bone disease. To enhance absorption, take the calcium supplement as three divided doses at three different times a day. Calcium citrate is the preferred form of calcium. Do not take calcium at the same time as your multivitamin with iron, since the iron may affect calcium absorption.
Take 800 to 1,000 international units of vitamin D daily. This total amount should be taken as 400 to 500 IU twice daily with your calcium supplement. If you prefer, you can take a combination calcium-vitamin D supplement as long as it contains the proper dosages.

Nutrient Function Resultant Deficiency Signs Of Toxicity And Major Food Sources
While it is important to understand that pre-operative deficiencies are common, many patients wonder what is so important about each nutrient. Below are two charts explaining the function of each nutrient, as well as some of the signs and symptoms of deficiencies and toxicities. In addition, food sources that are high in each nutrient are also listed. The chemical name listed for each nutrient are how you might find the nutrient in the supplement facts and/or ingredient listing. There are many forms of certain nutrients and we will discuss some of those forms in more detail so you have a better understanding of what to look for.
The solubility section states whether the vitamin is fat-soluble or water-soluble . In general, fat-soluble vitamins must be absorbed in the presence of fat . Fat-soluble vitamins tend to be stored in higher amounts in the body and have an increased risk of toxicity compared to water-soluble vitamins. Water-soluble vitamins do not have to be absorbed in the presence of fat and generally the body does not store large amounts of these nutrients. Moreover, these nutrients can be excreted through urine if you take more than you need, reducing the risk of toxicity, in general.

Can I Get What I Need From A Drugstore Vitamin
Filed under:Hot Topics
It is easy to feel confused aboutwhich vitamins you should be taking as a bariatric patient.
Recently someone asked us, Can I get what I need from aDrugstore Vitamin?
The answer is No!
Not only are the nutritional valuestoo low for bariatric patients, but the standard of quality testing for someover the counter nutritional supplements is just not good enough certainly not up to Opurity® standards.
Weve heard patients mention they aretaking Flintstones Complete or Centrum Silver and some are even taking prenatalvitamins.
Those can be convenient, but NONEof them–not even the pregnancy vitamins–meet ASMBS guidelines for bariatricpatients even if you double the dose. In fact, some vitamins like Thiamin and B12, require 8-10 times theamount that is found in a standard over-the-counter vitamin.
Vitamin deficiencies are common, anddevelop over time. You might not evenknow that you are deficient until you start having debilitating symptoms. Anddeficiencies can be hard to correct once they occur.
One patient recently told us, I tooka regular vitamin, and was in trouble after the first month.
Your post-op nutrition is so importantto your long-term health and success. Deficiencies can damage your health permanently, so the quality andnutritional value of the vitamins that you take matter a LOT!
Take the trustworthy vitamin that ismade with you in mind.

Post Weight Loss Surgery Nutrient Deficiencies
According to the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery , there is a major health concern in regards to bariatric patients: an increase in micronutrient deficiency post weight loss surgery. How can this be, you may ask?
When you undergo a weight loss surgery procedure, the intestinal tract is inevitably altered due to either restrictive operations, malabsorptive operations, or even a combination of the two. The goal of these procedures is to either restrict calorie consumption per day or to alter absorption, which results in malabsorption of fat in the food that you consume. What does this mean for bariatric patients? These procedures lead to a limit in food volume intake and present individuals with nutritional deficiencies. In other words, bad news!
But dont worry! There is also good news and it come in the form of the ASMBS guidelines.
Bariatric Vitamins: Why Asmbs Guidelines Are Important
At least once in our lives, weve all been told to take our vitamins, most likely in our early child years. While chewing our tasty Flintstones vitamins, we probably were unaware of the health benefits that these candy-like vitamins possessed. As adults, we have a far better understanding of the importance of taking our vitamins as a growing child. But did you know that the health benefits of vitamins also extend to bariatric patients? And it is vital to understand the formulation of bariatric vitamins and why they are optimal for health following surgery.

Prenatal Nutrition And Vitamins
During pregnancy, a woman needs more of certain nutrients, including folic acid, iodine, iron and calcium. While getting these nutrients through food is the best option, taking a prenatal supplement ensures that mother and baby both get everything they need. Regular multivitamins and Flinstones vitamins may not have the correct amounts of each nutrient for pregnancy.

Asmbs Guidelines To The Rescue
The ASMBS guidelines were created specifically for those with increased nutrient needs after undergoing a weight loss surgery procedure. These guidelines recognize the restrictive and/or malabsorptive properties that weight loss surgery leads to.
Perhaps you are wondering why exactly these guidelines are so important. Well, without these guidelines, many individuals that have undergone weight loss surgery would present untreatable nutritional deficiencies that could be detrimental to living a healthy and normal post-operation life.
Deficiencies can be individualized based on the procedure performed, resulting in a need for specially formulated vitamins, generally these are labelled bariatric vitamins.
Common deficiencies after bariatric surgery include:
With so many common deficiencies, it is recommended that patients take a complete daily multivitamin to maintain healthy nutrient levels.
