If this is a zero-sum game, I have to go with GNC but things change fast in this environment and I could see a number of lifelines being extended to either party to really make one a winner over another.

Health and fitness are a huge focus in todays world. In the United States, it has to do in part with the rising obesity problem. After all, when being overweight is something of an epidemic, people will try to push back against it in whatever way they can manage. However, thats not the only reason health and fitness are such a huge focus.
Theres also the fact that peoples diets have gotten much, much worse over the past few decades. Food production companies have worked harder to ensure that they can make fat, salt, and sugar incredibly cheap. This, in turn, causes more and more food to contain fat, sugar, and salt. It doesnt take long before a person winds up gaining weight.

However, the rumor to take over its rival and multi-channel specialty retailer Vitamin Shoppe, Inc. that has been doing the rounds for quite some time, has provided a slight impetus.
Accordingly, yesterday, with GNCs sudden cancellation of an appearance at the Jefferies 2016 Consumer Conference , the hope of the merger to materialize soon has resurfaced, driving shares of the company up by 2.63% at closing.
The Vitamin Shoppe buyout story first buzzed in immediately after the companys earnings call in the last quarter. GNC had announced that in response to its continuous sales dip, its board of directors had commenced a wide range of strategic and financial alternatives to increase shareholder value. The review emphasized potential value-maximizing alternatives such as partnerships and other value-creating collaborations, or a potential sale of the company among many other probable strategies. These initiatives came as a major boost for investors, resulting in an immediate 7% rise in share price on May 2.

Because both of those brands, GNC and Vitamin Shoppe, are very different, they have different customer personas in terms of who they go after. Even though they do have some crossover, I don’t think they’re as much of main competitors as a lot of people may assume. So I think they can carve out those niches a lot stronger there and focus on their brand a lot more and hopefully be able to find their people, find their tribe, said Schall.
Looking ahead, Schall said he expects the futures of both GNC and the Vitamin Shoppe to be brightif they can give customers a reason to keep coming back.
I think the most important thing is where each day, they can’t get complacent. And they have to really say, This is why you come and spend your dollars with me because there’s so many substitutes in the market today,” said Schall. “You can go to Walmart, you can go to Amazon. You can go anywhere to buy these supplements now. So, why shop with those retail brands? I think that is really where they need to focus and if they do, it’ll be great next 12 to 18 months.
