Can Prenatal Vitamins Cause Constipation

Do Prenatal Vitamins Cause Acne

Pregnancy Second Trimester: Prenatal Vitamins, Constipation, Nausea.

Acne is also another common problem during pregnancy. This is due to the increase or the imbalance of certain hormones. Some expecting mothers may blame prenatal vitamins as the cause of acne but there is no scientific evidence that prenatal vitamins cause acne.

Prenatal vitamins are nothing more than the regular daily multivitamins that are slightly higher than normal doses and this will not cause breakouts on your skin.

Both pregnancy and postpartum acne are heavily influenced due to the imbalance of hormones that occur during the first trimester and the period following child birth. During pregnancy you experience drops in estrogen and spikes in testosterone causes a rise in sebum production, which feeds the bacteria living inside the follicle and contributes to the formation of acne.

If you experience acne during pregnancy you should do the following to control the acne

You should change your diet by staying away from acne causing foods including iodine, peanuts, soy and dairy which can trigger hormone fluctuations that lead to increased oil production.

Instead, substitute dairy foods with green leafy vegetables as your main source of calcium, drink almond, coconut, rice, or hemp milk and if you are a vegetarian stick to grains and legumes instead of tofu and cheese.

Avoid any acne care products because they might interfere with your pregnancy, If you must take them do discuss with your physician before taking them.

Including Healthy Fats In The Diet

The body needs all kinds of nutrients for keeping healthy. Including healthy fats in the diet in the form of coconut oil, raw milk, and butter, fish oil, pastured meats etc. can help greatly in dealing with the problem of constipation caused due to vitamin supplement intake.

Now that you know, avoid vitamins that can cause constipation and lead a healthy life.

Iron In Your Prenatal May Be Making You Sick

The most common reason prenatal vitamins make you sick is that it can cause you to get too much iron. Although iron is in most capsule prenatal vitamins, it is one of the most common ingredients that can make you sick during pregnancy. Women are very different when it comes to how much iron they need during pregnancy and when they need it.

Too much iron, which can easily happen with supplements, can result in side effects such as constipation, nausea, throwing up, or diarrhea.

Too much iron can also escalate and be a contributor to gestational diabetes and other pregnancy complications.

On the other hand, not enough iron can result in anemia, fatigue, or low body temperature.

If your prenatal vitamin is making you sick check and see if it has iron. Then, work with your doctor to see if you even need an iron supplement. This can be seen by taking a simple blood draw.

Many women do not need iron supplements during pregnancy. Other women will take a separate supplement for iron so that they can get the exact amount they need.

Heres Why Vitamin D Supplements Are Ineffective For Treating Painful Ibs

Vitamin D supplements are not an effective treatment for easing painful symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome , a new study from the University of Sheffield revealed.

The findings of the study appeared in the European Journal of Nutrition.

Scientists from the Universitys Department of Oncology and Metabolism in conjunction with a health supplement company, BetterYou carried out trials on participants who suffer from the chronic condition of the digestive system to assess whether vitamin D reduced the severity of their symptoms and whether it could improve their quality of life.

Results of the study found that despite an improvement in vitamin D status in the participants in response to a vitamin D3 oral spray supplementation over a 12-week trial, there was no difference to their IBS symptom severity over the same period, nor a reported change in the participants quality of life.

IBS is a common functional bowel disorder, characterised by chronically relapsing perturbed bowel habit. It causes symptoms such as stomach cramps, bloating, diarrhoea and constipation.

For some, symptoms will come and go, but for others, it can severely affect their quality of life, often causing embarrassment leading to many living with the condition undiagnosed, affecting both mental health and wellbeing.

Also, make sure to include both soluble* and insoluble fiber in your diet. For example, dont get all 25 grams of fiber from whole wheat cereal alone- youll likely make your constipation worse. Make sure youre getting your fiber from a variety of foods to promote good digestive balance. Here are some ideas:

Soluble fiber

*Note: Insoluble fiber is not broken down by your digestive system , whereas soluble fiber draws water into your intestines which helps keep stool soft.

Can You Take Prenatal Vitamins If Youre Not Pregnant

If youre planning to get pregnant you can start taking folic acid supplements. Half of the United States pregnancies are unplanned, so prenatals can protect your pregnancy from complications, as some defects can appear in the early stages of the pregnancy.

However, if you dont want to get pregnant, its best to follow a healthy diet and get the nutrients you need from food. Prenatals can cause adverse effects if you take more than you need to.

When Should I Take Prenatal Vitamins

Always talk with your doctor before starting to take prenatal vitamins. If youre trying to conceive or are pregnant, your doctor will likely recommend that you take them.

While you can buy prenatal vitamins over the counter, doctors can prescribe them too. Women who are carrying multiples, pregnant teenagers, and pregnant women with a history of substance abuse have a higher risk of vitamin and mineral deficiencies. Prenatal vitamins are particularly important for these women.

Doctors often recommend that women who are breastfeeding also continue taking prenatal vitamins after delivery. Prenatal vitamins can serve as a further supplement to lactating women who need plenty of nutrients to make breast milk.

Even if you arent trying to get pregnant, you still might want to take a folic acid supplement. Thats because half of the pregnancies in the United States arent planned. Because the brain and spinal cord are already forming at the early stages of pregnancy, folic acid is vital. Women of childbearing age could also eat more folate-rich foods as an alternative to taking a supplement.

Do Prenatal Vitamins Have Any Side Effects

The ingredient thats most likely to cause gastrointestinal side effects is iron, which may cause indigestion and constipation. There are different iron preparations available, so women who experience these effects with one vitamin may want to try a different vitamin that has a slower-release form of iron.

Other vitamins dont necessarily have side effects, but may be harmful if too much is ingested. Too much vitamin A can have harmful effects on the fetus, but is fine when taken as beta-carotene, a plant-based precursor thats safe. Too much iodine and fat-soluble vitamins may also be harmful.

Finally, prenatal vitamins that pack in all these nutrients may be bigsome women find them hard to swallow and they may cause gagging. Using a chewable alternative may be an option.

This advice applies to most low-risk women and pregnancies. There are certain cases , where the nutritional needs are different. These women should contact their prenatal care providers about the best regimen of nutritional supplement to use.
