The Council for Responsible Nutrition was reacting to a study published late last week in JAMA Network Open. The research, dubbed the COVID A to Z Study, was conducted at the Cleveland Clinic.

The goal of the research was to see if high doses of vitamin C and zinc gluconate could lessen the length of symptoms experienced by patients diagnosed with COVID-19 infections who had not been hospitalized. The patients were recruited at and treated at the Cleveland Clinic. The goal of the study was to recruit aboutGet subjects.

The patents were divided into four groups: a vitamin C group, a zinc group, one group that received both supplements and a control group that got no supplement intervention.

The main outcome was the self reported duration and severity of symptoms in the intervention groups as compared to the controls. The original plan called for assessment of 4 symptoms: fever/chills, shortness of breath, cough, and fatigue. In July 2020 after an advisory from the Centers of Disease Control the researchers added additional symptoms to the list, including loss of taste and smell, headache and others, to make a total of 12 symptoms. The subjects were followed for 28 days.

My #1 Tip To Boost Your Immune System

I love to espouse the benefits of nourishing foods. Even though Im a big fan of eating for health, there is one simple, non-food tip that has saved me more in healthcare expenses than any other vitamin C and Zinc. Like two peas in a pod, these best buddies act like superman to boost your immune system. Who doesnt want superman on their side?

Heres the deal when my husband first got sick back in October of 2014 I was still waking up each night to feed our newest baby, along with taking care of the other 4 kids during the day . I was tired.

Thankfully I was also eating the best that I ever have in my life. Even so, I knew that I couldnt risk getting sick. There were too many people dependent on me. So, I began taking vitamin C and Zinc each day. I would take it for a week or two, then give myself a week break.

If anyone got the sniffles I immediately took some C and Zinc. Lo and behold, I have not been sick since beginning my C & Zinc regimen. Ill get that sort of beginning-of-a-sore-throat thing that happens before a cold, but it never turns into a full blown ninja punch to the sinuses.

Could it just be a coincidence? Yep, totally. But guess what? Theres science to back up the claims that Zinc can help boost your immune system and keep sickness at bay. Finally, a hippy remedy that I can back up with evidence!

Vitamin C Supplement Form

Vitamin C can be taken in various forms, like tablets, capsules, sprays, gummies, lozenges, powder, etc.

You can choose the options that you are most comfortable with. For example, some people can easily swallow tablets and capsules, while others cant. The main advantage of Vitamin C tablets is that you can carry them in your purses and bags.

For the people who are uncomfortable with swallowing tablets, you can either go for gummies, lozenges, or powder.

But pay attention to the ingredient list, especially while buying gummies, as some have higher sugar content.

The spray is another form of consuming vitamin C. In addition to that, you can also take it wherever you go.

High Doses Of Zinc Shorten Colds And Make Them Less Intense

Several studies have shown that zinc can be successfully used to prevent and treat colds. The number of colds that actually broke out decreased significantly among the subjects. Even the probability that an existing cold would last seven days becomes very low. In addition, the cold symptoms among the subjects were a lot milder. However, to benefit, high zinc doses must be taken immediately after the first cold symptoms appear, and no later than 24 hours after the cold has started.

The correct zinc compound is also important, as this effect could be seen only when high doses of organic zinc compounds, that exceeded 75 mg, were taken. Organic zinc compounds are readily biologically available and can be specifically taken in consultation with your physician when zinc deficiency is detected.

Why Is Everyone Taking Elderberry

Elderberry is a great general health tonic! Why? Because its an antioxidant.

Just like cherries, raspberries, and blueberries, the antioxidant properties of elderberry provide our existing immune cells with armor.

When foreign cells invade and attack our tissue and cells, we release free radicals to annihilate them. However, free radicals dont discriminate between friend and foe. They can easily do damage in this process.

The armor supplied by the antioxidant properties of elderberry to our tissues and cells keep them protected from free radicals while they dispatch the foreign cells.

There is some good research available regarding its ability to fight the common cold and the flu. This makes sense given its antioxidant capabilities, it will likely work on these conditions in the same way vitamin C would.

Why You Should Not Take Supplements

Unlike drugs, supplements are not permitted to be marketed for the purpose of treating, diagnosing, preventing, or curing diseases. That means supplements should not make disease claims, such as lowers high cholesterol or treats heart disease. Claims like these cannot be legitimately made for dietary supplements.

Zinc And Vitamin C For The Common Cold

Zinc is a nutrient that helps the immune system fight off invading bacteria and viruses. The body needs zinc to make proteins and DNA, and the nutrient helps wounds to heal.

Zinc is required in order for the bodys immune system to do its job, and people with low levels of zinc may have a higher risk of getting pneumonia and other infections. Research suggests that using zinc lozenges or syrup can help speed up recovery from the common cold by up to a day if its taken within 24 hours of developing symptoms. However, studies are still ongoing.

Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, is an antioxidant that helps support the immune systems function. Vitamin C also protects the bodys cells from damage caused by free radicals, which are compounds formed when the body converts food into energy.

Research has found that vitamin C supplements can reduce the length of time for a cold by 8% in adults and 14% in kids.

Synergistic Action Of Nutrients On Physical Barriers

The outer and inner surfaces of an organism, such as the skin and mucous membranes, are the first line of defense against pathogens, toxins and other foreign bodies, as they form physical barriers that prevent entry . SARS-CoV-2 is able to penetrate physical barriers when they are vulnerable. Thus, it can be transmitted directly, when there is physical contact with the infected person, or indirectly, when the infection occurs through droplets and aerosols in suspension or through fomites, where steel and plastic are the materials in which this virus is more viable .

Droplets containing SARS-CoV-2 are transmitted when they come in contact with the oral, respiratory tract and intestinal mucosa and the conjunctiva, tissues that express ACE2 necessary for the entry of this virus into the body. However, whether the consumption of food contaminated with SARS-CoV-2 can cause its transmission through the digestive system remains to be confirmed . Thus, the physical and functional integrity of the physical barriers, especially epithelial cells, is important for reducing the risk of SARS-CoV-2 contagion.

The epithelial cells are joined by distinct intercellular junctions, known as the epithelial junctional complex, which is formed by tight junctions, adherens junctions and desmosomes . Because they act as a selective barrier, this complex prevents the entry of pathogens and toxins into the bloodstream.
