Everything You Need To Know About Vitamin Infusion Therapy
You might have heard of vitamin infusion therapy its all the rage with celebrities such as Rihanna, Rita Ora and Madonna. It has hit the headlines as the new wellness trend, designed to provide a range of health benefits including anti-aging, allergy relief, weight loss and even relief from serious illnesses such as cancer. But what is it, and how does it work?
What Happens When You Take The Treatment
This phrase loops in my head as I return to the clinic for my treatment. Ten minutes in, I trail off mid-sentence talking to the nurse .
Afterwards I head to the hospital for more blood tests, intrigued to see what all this has done to my blood levels.
The results reveal a surge in vitamin B12 and large spikes in vitamin C and zinc.
A vitamin drip cocktail with a high dose of vitamin B12 increases blood concentration levels, says Powers. But that will likely exceed the amount your kidneys can handle and youll wee out the rest.
In other words, such high doses are essentially pointless. As for vitamin C: White blood cells are saturated after taking 100-200mg orally, says Shenkin.
The cells dont work faster or harder because there is more of a vitamin or mineral. Fortunately for these clinics, they dont have to answer scientists claims, as they fall outside the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agencys remit.
Overt medical claims are policed, but promises to boost energy, immunity, weight loss or skin health are not.
Alongside the unsubstantiated claims are the tantalising anecdotes of vitamin drip converts.
For Kelly Marks, 42, who works in public relations in London, her first IV experience made her really relax. I went for a 45-minute drip and left feeling less bogged down by my worries, she says. Emily Porter, 32, a copywriter from Devon noted the difference while running: I achieved a PB over 5K, which felt effortless.

Can Help Treat Certain Conditions
IV therapy is best known for its ability to hydrate your body and make you feel your best. It can also improve certain conditions that affect the digestive tract, including Crohns disease, ulcerative colitis, colon cancer, and cystic fibrosis. Since those ailments may inhibit the absorption of certain vitamins and minerals, IV therapy can help deliver those same nutrients without upsetting the digestive tract.

How Does Iv Therapy Work
Just like your expected IV Therapy cost, the way IV Therapy works is fairly straightforward. If youve ever been admitted to a hospital and had a saline IV drip, then the process should be familiar to you. You will be seated in a comfortable area and one of our expert technicians will insert an intravenous line into your arm, either at your elbow or on the back of your hand. From there, your treatment is as simple as draining the IV drip.
Before your first IV therapy appointment, we will have a short consultation to explain the treatment steps and your treatment options in further detail. We may need to gather certain pertinent medical information, such as any current medical issues you may have, your current regimen of vitamins and medications, and whether or not you are currently pregnant or breastfeeding.
Your IV appointment can be done at any time of the day, though there are a few IV options that are best during the morning hours, such as our Boozy Bag. In general, you should expect your IV Therapy to take at least 30 minutes to complete. However, if you are using a larger bag for your treatment, your appointment could take as much as 45 minutes to complete.
There is no recovery time associated with this treatment. After the treatment is complete, most patients are able to detect a boost in overall energy within 1 to 3 hours. Patients are encouraged to resume all normal daily activities, including work and regular exercise routines.
What Do Iv Vitamin Drips Do
“When food or supplements are taken orally, they must pass through the gastrointestinal tract where they are absorbed. The food matrix and the presence of other substances in the gut at the same time can influence the extent of the nutrients absorption, both positively and negatively,” says Hunty.
“As the vitamins and minerals are not completely absorbed by this route, IV drips leads to higher blood levels of these substances than would be achieved by taking them orally.”
In short, IV vitamin drips deliver a higher concentration of certain vitamins and minerals into your bloodstream and at a much quicker rate than taking something orally, hence their reputation between the A-lister and jet-set world as a speedy hangover cure.
“Generally intravenously is the more efficient way to administer something,” agrees Dr Gravaghi. “It can be different for vitamin C or vitamin D for example, but generally if you take 1g of something orally, about 40-to-60 per cent will get absorbed. Using an IV method will mean 80-to-100 per cent of that 1g will be easily absorbed.”

What Medical Experts Think About The Ivs Effectiveness
Like many alternative treatments, vitamin IV drips do not have a strong body of scientific evidence to back up their health claims. Some services and their alleged perks arent evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. Rick Pescatore, an emergency physician and the director of clinical research in the Department of Emergency Medicine at Crozer-Keystone Health System in the Philadelphia area, believes they offer no benefits whatsoever.
Vitamin infusions for healthy individuals are little more than snake oil, he said. There is no data to support their use or literature that they offer any meaningful health benefit. While vitamin supplementation certainly has utility in certain disease processes, health-maintaining or rejuvenating applications are nothing more than quackery.
Pescatore added that for many healthy individuals, water-soluble vitamins like vitamin C only lead to expensive urine.

Dr. Niket Sonpal, a practicing gastroenterologist and hepatologist and associate program director of internal medicine residency at Brookdale University Hospital Medical Center in Brooklyn, underscored the possible benefits of vitamin IVs for people who are already sick.
Pescatore said people should be cautious about potentially overdosing on vitamins during a session.

What Is Iv Vitamin Drip Therapy
Vitamin drips consist of a blend of a saltwater solution and carefully picked vitamins to help strengthen your immune system, overcome jet lag and cure a hangover. Other supposed outcomes include healthy skin, energy boost, enhanced mood, sports recovery, anti-inflammation and even a brain boost.
IV stands for intravenous. This means that a concentrated dose of vitamins is injected directly into the bloodstream, allowing these vitamins and minerals to bypass the digestive system, which some have claimed allows the body to obtain more nutrients as the digestive process is avoided.
How Much Does Iv Vitamin Therapy Cost
There are several routes of drug and vitamin administration. A common one that everyone is familiar with is the oral route. Most drugs are taken by mouth, either before or after food. Vitamins are also taken in the form of oral supplements, whether tablets or capsules. However, these are not the only routes available for drug or vitamin delivery. Patients who are unable to swallow drugs and vitamins are given injections. One significant advantage of these injections is that the vitamin or drug goes directly into the blood. This is referred to as the intravenous route. Treatment of conditions or the supply of vitamins through injections is referred to as intravenous therapy. Intravenous vitamin therapy narrows down the treatment to only vitamins.
What Is An Iv Vitamin Drip
While the IV vitamin drip might not be new to the wellness scene, its marked increase in demand is a reflection of contemporary attitudes towards health. “Weve noticed more awareness of certain vitamins in our clinics,” says Bianca Estelle, IVNT specialist and founder of Vitamin Injections London. “For example, weve known for years that the population is low in vitamin D, but this knowledge is now more widely circulated.”
At-home beauty service Ruuby reported a 300 per cent rise in bookings for IV drips post-lockdown. “It’s a trend that will continue to rise,” says clinical nutritionist Dr Claudia Gravaghi. As she’s seen, the pre-Covid Instagrammable draw of IV drips has been overtaken by a shift in attitude. “Even in my career I’ve had so many clients asking for boosters and active vitamins. People are scared and they want to boost their immunity.”
The abbreviation IV stands for “intravenous”, meaning administered through the veins. Operating in a similar way to the IV drips previously reserved for hospital in-patients, in saline solution, a cocktail of nutrients are administered into the bloodstream via a cannula. Only this time, hospital gowns and linoleum floors are replaced by sleek white clinics, or for those looking to maximise efficiency, conducted from the comfort of your own home or office.
Who Needs Vitamin Supplements
Certain groups at risk of deficiencies should use supplements:
- All pregnant and breastfeeding women should take vitamin D supplements
- Women trying to conceive and women in the first 12 weeks of their pregnancy are recommended to take folic acid supplements, which reduce their child’s risk of neural tube defects such as spina bifida
- People aged 65 and over should take vitamin D supplements
- People with darker skin and people who are not exposed to much sun should take vitamin D supplements
- All children aged six months to five years should be given a supplement containing vitamins A, C and D
- Your doctor may also recommend supplements if you need them for a medical condition
- If you fall outside these groups and buy vitamin pills then the chances are that you will be spending your money on surplus amounts of vitamins you have already gained through your diet
Lisa Rogers, from the World Health Organization, thinks that people are being overzealous in their ingestion of extra vitamins.
“They think that it will give them a certain advantage. People only need vitamins in tiny amounts and only in the case of having a deficiency is it worth considering taking extra supplements,” she says.
Force-feeding vitamins into the veins via a drip could even put people at risk of a potential overdose, warns Ms Medlin.
