Add Some Pomegranate To Your Diet

Whether you enjoy pomegranate juice, the tasty pulp and seeds, or prefer the supplement, be sure to include this fruit in your diet more often. Research at Johns Hopkins has shown that this phytonutrient-rich fruit can reduce the rate of PSA doubling in men who have prostate cancer. Overall, the doubling time increased from 11.9 months at baseline to 18.5 months after treatment with pomegranate extract. Since pomegranate is rich in sugar, taking a supplement may be better than having the fruit on a regular basis.

Although several hormones have an impact on the prostate, one in particular DHT, or dihydrotestosterone promotes prostate inflammation and stimulates insulin-like growth factor-1 , a hormone that can promote abnormal cell growth and cancer. Certain foods contain substances shown to naturally inhibit DHT. One of those substances is lycopene, which is found in carrots, mangoes, tomatoes, and watermelon.

A National Institutes of Health study noted that lycopene inhibits IGF-I growth in prostate cells by reducing DHT-modulated IGF-I production. Other food substances that inhibit DHT include L-lysine , and zinc . Make a point to include several of the mentioned foods in your diet every day.

All trial participants will be monitored by the IDMC and will be immediately removed from the study if they have:

  • Iincidence of hypercalcaemia and hypercalcinuria, which will be measured to ensure serum and urine levels are below 2.75mmol/L and less than 7.5mmol/24hours, respectively.

  • A 20% fall in the estimated GFR, over the course of the study.

  • More than two episodes of renal calculi occurring over the course of the study.

A participant who develops either hypercalcaemia or hypercalciuria will be referred to their general practitioner, for further management of their condition. A participant who develops renal calculi will be managed by their treating urologist for acute management of the stone as per normal procedures and guidelines.

Questions And Answers About Green Tea

Can Omega
  • What is green tea?

Tea comes from the Camellia sinensis plant. The way tea leaves are processed determines whether green tea, black tea, or oolong tea is made. Green tea leaves are steamed and dried.

The health benefits studied in green tea are thought to be from compounds called polyphenols. Polyphenols are a group of plant chemicals that include catechins . Catechins make up most of the polyphenols in green tea.

Catechins in green tea can vary widely, depending on the source of the tea leaves and the way they are processed. This makes it hard to identify most of the chemical factors linked to the health benefits of green tea.

Some studies suggest that green tea may protect against heart and blood vessel disease.

  • How is green tea given or taken?

People usually drink green tea or take it as a dietary supplement.

  • Have any laboratory or animal studies been done using green tea?

See the Laboratory/Animal/Preclinical Studies section of the health professional version of Prostate Cancer, Nutrition, and Dietary Supplements for information on laboratory and animal studies done using green tea.

  • Overall, population studies suggest that green tea may help protect against prostate cancer in Asian populations. Prostate cancer deaths in Asia are among the lowest in the world.

What Would You Recommend To Others Who Are In A Similar Situation

His tortoise Olivia, who gets extra vitamin D

I recommend that people take 45 IU/day per lb of body weight. I determined that number through my biochemistry research over the years. I tell all men in my family over 30 to have an annual PSA test and to take 5,000 IU of D3 every day. I also recommend checking baseline vitamin D levels twice a year winter & summer.

For people in the middle of cancer treatments, I tell my story first. They usually get excited, especially my black friends. I let them know that if they have adequate levels of vitamin D it will enhance and help some of their chemotherapy. I remind them that my background is in biochemistry, but it cant hurt for them to take vitamin D. I tell them to take a minimum of 4000 IU/day along with all of their other medicines.

    Search Strategy And Selection Criteria

We conducted MEDLINE searches to identify epidemiological studies on the relationship between vitamin D and prostate cancer risk. To identify the studies of prostate cancer risk in relation to vitamin D, we searched using the terms prostate cancer and prostate cancer risk in combination with the following terms: epidemiology, incidence, prevalence, risk factors, vitamin D, sunlight exposure, ultraviolet radiation, geography, dairy, dietary, diet, micronutrients, nutrition, serum vitamin D, serum 1,252D3 and serum 25-dihydroxyvitamin D. We also searched the bibliography of the selected papers to identify relevant articles that we might have missed during the primary MEDLINE search. To be included in the review, a study must have been published in English, reported on data collected in humans with prostate cancer, had prostate cancer risk as the primary outcome measure, had vitamin D as one of the or the only risk factor measured as follows and had any of the following study designs . There were no restrictions according to age, ethnicity or stage of prostate cancer.

    Dairy Foods And Calcium

Some research has shown that men who have a diet high in calcium may have a higher risk of developing prostate cancer. And men may be more likely to have prostate cancer that is more advanced or aggressive. But there is no evidence to say that excluding dairy foods and calcium from the diet will slow the growth of prostate cancer, or reduce the risk of the cancer coming back.

Men with prostate cancer should aim for a healthy balanced diet that includes adequate amounts of calcium. It plays an important part in the way our bodies work. For example it helps keep our bones strong and healthy and helps our muscle to work.

Adults need 700 mg of calcium each day, which most people can get from a balanced healthy diet. Choose low fat and low sugar dairy products.

    Good sources of calcium include

    • dairy foods such as milk, cheese and yoghurts
    • tinned fish that contains the bones, for example, salmon or sardines
    • green leafy vegetables
    • nuts such as almonds and brazil nuts
    • seeds such as sesame seeds

Its difficult to give examples of specific amounts. But a daily 700mg of calcium could include all of the following:

    • a small tin of pilchards or sardines
    • a 50g portion of broccoli
    • 200 mls of milk

It is particularly important if you are having hormone therapy to have adequate amounts of calcium. This is because bone thinning is a side effect of this treatment.

Talk to your GP if you are struggling to eat a balanced diet and ask whether you need to take supplements.

    Questions And Answers About Calcium

    The Truth About VITAMIN D
  • What is calcium?

Calcium is a mineral that is needed for basic blood vessel, muscle, and nerve functioning, for sending signals from cell to cell, and for releasing hormones. It is the most common mineral in the body. The body stores calcium mainly in bone tissue.

  • How is calcium given or taken?

The main sources of calcium are in foods and dietary supplements. About one-third of dietary calcium comes from milk and milk products like cheese and yogurt. Vegetable sources include Chinese cabbage, kale, and broccoli. Foods may have calcium added, such as fruit juices and drinks, tofu, and cereals.

Most research about calcium and prostate cancer risk has studied calcium in the diet and not calcium in supplements.

  • Have any laboratory or animal studies been done using calcium?

See the Laboratory/Animal/Preclinical Studies section of the health professional version of Prostate Cancer, Nutrition, and Dietary Supplements for information on laboratory and animal studies done using calcium.

  • A 2005 review found a possible link between an increased risk of prostate cancer and a diet high in dairy products and calcium.
  • A review of studies published between 1996 and 2006 found that milk and dairy products in the diet increased the risk of prostate cancer.
  • A 2008 review of 45 studies found no link between dairy products and the risk of prostate cancer.
  • Population studies

How Do You Tell Others About Vitamin D

    Mike and his dog Morkie

I tell others with or without cancer to see their doctor and first establish their baseline of D. Test once in the winter and once in the summer. I have lectured twice for my church and at an AARP event. All those old folks do not take vitamin D, only one person out of a hundred was taking vitamin D when I asked for a show of hands.

    Is Wine Good For Prostate

A new study shows men who drink four or more glasses of red wine per week have a nearly 50% lower risk of prostate cancer than non-drinkers. In addition, researchers found that red wines protective effects appear to be even stronger against the most dangerous and aggressive forms of prostate cancer.

    Choose Healthy Protein Sources

    Prostate Health Program

In general, going for lean proteins, like chicken, fish, and soy or other plant-based protein, is better for overall health. These sources of protein help you to maintain a healthy weight and protect against heart disease. They can also benefit your prostate health and lower PSA levels.

Avoid fatty or processed meats and instead choose fish thats rich in omega-3s and chicken baked or grilled without the skin.

Soy, which is used to make tofu and other meat substitutes, contains isoflavones. Researchers believe these nutrients can protect against certain cancers. In fact, there is some evidence that drinking soy milk can actually help to lower PSA levels and slow the progression of prostate cancer.

I learned about vitamin D first as a biochemist. I was interested in it because when you have adequate amounts of vitamin D it increases your anti-microbial peptides , which is great for fighting disease. I think it is very interesting that every cell in your body has receptors for vitamin D. I googled vitamin D and found out information from the Vitamin D Council and GrassrootsHealth.

    Try Quercetin And Pollen

Both quercetin and pollen have demonstrated properties that promote and support prostate health, including anti-inflammatory and antioxidant abilities, especially in the management of the inflammatory condition known as prostatitis. In addition, a new study in Urology looked at the effect of an anti-inflammatory combination taken daily for three months by men with PSA values of 7.2 ng/mL or 7.3 ng/mL at baseline. By the end of the study, the combination had effectively and safely reduced PSA levels from 7.3 ng/mL to 4.6 ng/mL among men who had prostate inflammation. Both quercetin and pollen can be taken separately, but they also can be found together in supplement formulas designed to support prostate health.
