Should You Take A Vitamin D Supplement

Nature Made Vitamin D3, 350 Tablets Vitamin D 1000 IU (25 mcg) Review

Theres a good chance that the answer is yes, but it isnt a foregone conclusion. A government survey that tested blood levels of vitamin D in nearly 5,000 American adults found that about 42 percent had low levels. People who had darker skin, were obese, had low good HDL cholesterol, didnt drink milk , or were in overall poor health were more likely to be deficient.

However, this survey may have underestimated the number of people who need more vitamin D because it tested for deficiency levels that are known to lead to diseasewhich are lower than optimum or ideal levels of the vitamin. For example, a vitamin D deficiency may lead to osteoporosis, but a simple shortfalllower than optimum vitamin D levelsmight make you more prone to colds or winter blues, without an obvious connection.

You can track your vitamin D intake from food with a website and app such as QSun and Care Clinic . The Recommended Dietary Allowance for vitamin D is 600 IU daily for ages 1 through 70 and 800 IU after age 70. But many holistic doctors suggest higher amounts. You can customize your dosage with supplements, which come in a range of potencies up to 10,000 IU .

There are two types of vitamin D supplements: D3, the naturally occurring form that your body makes when exposed to the sun, and D, which occurs in plants. D is the preferred version as its easier for the body to absorb. Most vitamin D supplements on the market are made from lanolin.

How To Convert Vitamin D International Units To Micrograms

To convert Vitamin D from International Units to micrograms all you have to do is multiply IU with 0.025 or if you don’t have a calculator, divide the IU with 100 and then multiply it with 2.5.

Examples international units to micrograms

International units: 400 IU

  • 400 IU * 0.025 = 10 mcg
  • Without a calculator
    • Step 1: 400 IU/100 = 4
    • Step 2: 4 * 2.5 = 10 mcg

    International units: 1000 IU

    • 1000 IU * 0.025 = 25 mcg
  • Without a calculator
    • Step 1: 1000 IU/100 = 10
    • Step 2: 10 * 2.5 = 25 mcg

Those Who Live Farther Away From The Equator

Countries close to the equator get plenty of sunlight all year round. Conversely, countries farther away from the equator get less sunlight all year round.

This can cause low blood vitamin D levels, especially during winter months when there is even less sunlight.

For instance, a study of Norwegians discovered that they dont produce much vitamin D3 from their skin during the winter months of October to March .

If you live far from the equator, then you need to get more vitamin D from your diet and supplements. Many experts believe that people in these countries should consume at least 1,000 IU daily .

What Is Vitamin D And Why Is It Important

Vitamin D belongs to the family of fat-soluble vitamins, which include vitamins A, D, E and K. These vitamins are absorbed well with fat and are stored in the liver and fatty tissues.

There are two main forms of vitamin D in the diet:

    • Vitamin D2 : Found in plant foods like mushrooms.
    • Vitamin D3 : Found in animal foods like salmon, cod and egg yolks.

However, sunlight is the best natural source of vitamin D3. The UV rays from sunlight convert cholesterol in your skin into vitamin D3 .

Before your body can use dietary vitamin D, it must be activated through a series of steps .

First, the liver converts dietary vitamin D into the storage form of vitamin D. This is the form that is measured in blood tests. Later, the storage form is converted by the kidneys to the active form of vitamin D thats used by the body .

Interestingly, D3 is twice as effective at raising blood levels of vitamin D as vitamin D2 .

The main role of vitamin D in the body is to manage blood levels of calcium and phosphorus. These minerals are important for healthy bones .

Research also shows that vitamin D aids your immune system and may reduce your risk of heart disease and certain cancers .

A low blood level of vitamin D is linked to a greater risk of fractures and falls, heart disease, multiple sclerosis, several cancers and even death (

    16 ).

For instance, an analysis of five studies examined the link between vitamin D blood levels and colorectal cancer .

If your doctor has prescribed this medication, take as directed by your doctor. Your dosage is based on your medical condition, amount of sun exposure, diet, age, and response to treatment.

If you are using the liquid form of this medication, carefully measure the dose using a special measuring device/spoon. Do not use a household spoon because you may not get the correct dose.

Certain medications can decrease the absorption of vitamin D. Take your doses of these medications as far as possible from your doses of vitamin D . It may be easiest to take vitamin D at bedtime if you are also taking these other medications. Ask your doctor or pharmacist how long you should wait between doses and for help finding a dosing schedule that will work with all your medications.

What Happens If I Take Too Much Vitamin D

    Nature

Taking too many vitamin D supplements over a long period of time can cause too much calcium to build up in the body . This can weaken the bones and damage the kidneys and the heart.

If you choose to take vitamin D supplements, 10 micrograms a day will be enough for most people.

Do not take more than 100 micrograms of vitamin D a day as it could be harmful. This applies to adults, including pregnant and breastfeeding women and the elderly, and children aged 11 to 17 years.

Children aged 1 to 10 years should not have more than 50 micrograms a day. Infants under 12 months should not have more than 25 micrograms a day.

Some people have medical conditions that mean they may not be able to safely take as much. If in doubt, you should consult your doctor.

If your doctor has recommended you take a different amount of vitamin D, you should follow their advice.

You cannot overdose on vitamin D through exposure to sunlight. But always remember to cover up or protect your skin if you’re out in the sun for long periods to reduce the risk of skin damage and skin cancer.
