How Does Vitamin D Help Acne

Vitamin D has a number of benefits for acne treatment. First, it suppresses cell proliferation in the sebaceous glands. In this way, it prevents the enlargement of the sebaceous glands and reduces the production of sebum. Therefore, it prevents the appearance of acne comedones such as whiteheads and blackheads.

Secondly, vitamin D can become an anti-inflammatory agent at the right doses. While it may also cause inflammation, studies have shown that some vitamin D analogs can tilt the balance towards an anti-inflammatory effect useful in acne treatment.

Thirdly, vitamin D produces an antimicrobial effect through a group of natural antibacterial agents called cathelicidins. Cathelicidins are antimicrobial peptides produced by the leukocytes in epithelial cells.

Therefore, they can attack acne-causing bacteria. Lastly, vitamin D is also an antioxidant and it can protect the skin from oxidative stress.

If you are low in vitamin D, your immune system will be reduced. In extreme cases, vitamin D deficiency will show in weakened bones and muscles. However, most people do not have such low levels of vitamin D.

Common signs of a vitamin D deficiency include:

  • Your muscles are weak

Benefits Of Vitamin A For Acne

Vitamin A is an antioxidant. Antioxidants are known for preventing free radicals that can lead to cell damage. This may help decrease skin aging.

Vitamin A may also help treat acne, but it all depends on the source and how you use it. Eating vitamin A-rich foods can promote better skin health from the inside out, while topical formulas may target acne directly.

According to the American Academy of Dermatology , retinol , a topical form of vitamin A, can help treat and prevent inflammatory acne lesions.

In fact, the organization recommends using topical retinoids to treat several types of acne.

Retinol may help improve acne by:

  • increasing skin cell growth to heal lesions and scars
  • possibly decreasing sebum production
  • smoothing skin

couldnt support oral vitamin A as an effective acne treatment, but researchers did say it could possibly prevent acne vulgaris from getting worse.

More recent concluded oral vitamin A is effective at treating acne, but the study was small and of low quality.

Overall, vitamin A as an acne treatment is most promising as a topical treatment only.

While its important to get enough vitamin A in your diet, this isnt the best acne treatment solution. Taking too much can harm your health.

My Own Experience With Hormonal Acne

Now, when I had acne I tried everything my doctor would give me. I was desperate to improve the way my skin looked, and the way I felt about myself. I imagine youve also gone through a list of potions and pills, hoping each would work for you. I personally tried a long course of antibiotics to stop the acne, which permanently stained my teeth slightly yellow and destroyed my gut microbiome so badly that I spent my entire freshman year of college with viruses, yeast infections and flu-like symptoms. I tried Retinol-A cream and Salicylic Acid and Benzoyl Peroxide thinking I could heal my skin from the outside and just fix the surface of the issue. Needless to say, they didnt work.

The problem with all of the treatments for acne that youve probably been offered, or tried already, is that they dont solve the most common cause of an adult womans acne issues her hormones. In fact, antibiotics and the birth control pill only worsen the hormonal imbalance that is triggering the hormonal acne. A combination of two health problems underpins the development of hormonal acne a damaged and depleted gut microbiome and a deficiency in key miconutrients for skin health. These lead to hormonal imbalance and the development of acne as a result. Once I figured out how to eat and live to support my hormones with the Flo Living protocol my skin cleared up, and its been beautifully clear ever since.

What Are Vitamins And Minerals

Vitamins That Help Acne

Vitamins and minerals are micronutrients required by the body to perform basic functions. Vitamins are organic, while minerals are inorganic. This means that vitamins are fragile and can break-down under heat, during cooking and even just by being exposed to air for too long.

Minerals can keep their chemical structure intact, making them stronger and allowing them to find their way into our body easily.

Foods Rich In Antioxidants

Antioxidant-rich foods play a role in reducing hormonal acne. One study found that people who had lower antioxidants levels in their bloodstreamsuffered from more acne problems.

Although more research may be needed to confirm that foods rich in antioxidants can ward off hormonal breakouts, there is absolutely no harm in increasing your intake of antioxidant-rich foods, like:

  • Broccoli

into your diet to help balance hormones and avoid hormonal acne.

What Can You Do Yourself To Help

There are also measures you can take yourself to help ease spots:

Clean up your diet – Research has found that high-dairy, high-glycaemic index diets may be linked to acne. Try basing your diet on complex carbs like whole grains, fruit and vegetables, and reduce your dairy intake â try alternatives such as calcium-enriched soya milk.

Try tea tree – Tea tree oil has natural antiseptic qualities and has been shown to help improve spots.

Take skin-supporting supplements – One study showed people with acne might have low levels of zinc. Increase levels in your diet by eating more zinc-rich foods, such as seafood, meat and quinoa, or take a supplement.

Use gentle skin products – A common mistake is to treat skin too harshly, over-cleansing it. This can actually make acne worse. Instead, wash skin no more than twice a day and choose mild cleansing products. Also pick non-comedogenic makeup, which is less likely to block pores.

Cut stress – Try relaxation techniques such as yoga, or simply taking time out to read or go for a walk can be effective

Who Discovered Vitamin A

An English biochemist in 1912 named Frederick Gowland Hopkins found unknown factors present in milk that were not fats, proteins or carbohydrates, but were required to aid growth in rats. This vitamin would eventually be known as vitamin A and his discovery led to him winning a Nobel Prize.

Vitamin A is a type of retinoid most commonly known in its natural vitamin form as retinol. It is also found in foods such as carotenoids as well as found synthetically in prescription medication pills and creams in drugs such as Adapalene and Isotretinoin.

Vitamin A for Acne – Taking Vitamin A Supplements for Acne – Natural Acne Treatment

Acne can hit at any age. While it tends to be a lot more common in teenagers as well as menopausal women, it is estimated that about 50 million people suffer from acne in the United States alone. Acne occurs as a result of hormonal imbalance. When skin glands generate more oil than normal, the pores get clogged thereby allowing pimples and bacteria to grow.

Pimples occur in different depths and forms such as whiteheads, blackheads, nodules, and cysts. Research has shown that medications that contain benzoyl peroxide as well as oral drugs that have vitamin A or even antibiotics such as tetracycline, all work well to clear acne. However, for you to get the best results when treating your acne, its important that you first rule out any underlying causes for your breakouts.

In this guide, we take a look at the best vitamins for acne treatment.

Are B Vitamins Useful For Treating Acne

Consuming a healthy diet is getting more difficult for everyone lately. So taking supplements to fill in the nutritional gap is a good idea. Today, my focus is on B vitamins because those formulas are very useful to people, not only for energy, but also to control nerve pain and to help beautify the hair, skin and nails. The B vitamins are so important for your life, and unfortunately, they are so terribly misunderstood. Whats worse, millions of people are buying supplements of B complex that do not contain any active ingredients whatsoever! So today Im simply sharing what I know about B vitamins.

Most of you associate biotin as the beauty B vitamin, and that is true, however its not alone in its ability to support attractiveness. We know that a vitamin B12 deficiency can cause anemia, and therefore also lead to hair loss, pale skin and brittle nails. If you have bluish-black or dark-colored streaks on your fingernails, it might be a sign of B12 deficiency. This condition is reversible with B12 supplementation. But B12 will not work without enough biotin in your body. See the image below and Ill tell you more in a minute. When vitamin B12 levels are low, your hair follicles may not be able to grow new hair as efficiently, resulting in hair loss. Finally, a deficiency in natural folate can also change the color of your nails and make them rigid and crack.

But I mentioned biotin for more youthful, clear skin and thicker hair.

It doesnt do much without biotin!

How Does Vitamin B5 Help Acne

The usefulness of vitamin B5 in acne treatment was discovered in 1995 and well-documented by 3 papers published by Dr. Lit-Hung Leung who was looking for the benefits of using the vitamin to treat obesity. There are 2 mechanisms by which vitamin B5 helps to prevent and relieve acne symptoms.

First, it reduces the size of skin pores. This astringent-like constriction of the pores is unlike that produced by regular acne medications since it does not have the side effect of skin dryness. When these pores are constricted, the buildup of sebum is pushed out to the skin surface where it can be sloughed off. Furthermore, the constriction reduces the chances that the pores will be clogged by dead skin cells, bacteria, and excess sebum.

The second means by which vitamin B5 improves acne symptoms involve Coenzyme A. Pantothenic acid increases the production of Coenzyme A which then speeds up fat metabolism. This means that there is far less fat pushed to the sebaceous glands. Therefore, sebum production is reduced.

Because excess sebum on the skin provides the ideal environment for the growth of acne-causing bacteria, this effect of vitamin B5 is enough to starve these bacteria and reduce acne breakouts.

It is rare for a person who eats a normal or healthy diet to be deficient in vitamin B5. However, it can happen. Symptoms of a B5 deficiency include:

  • Fatigue

You Must Also Manage Your Diet

Cystic Acne Supplement for Women

Dr. Gray also stresses the importance of diet when managing hormonal acne. Although supplements can help, theres no pill, potion, or powder that can replace diet changes, she says. If you are eating too much sugar, dairy, or other inflammatory foods, changing the diet is the most important for you!

What Are The Or Minerals For People With Stress Acne

Emotional and psychological stress themselves do not necessarily cause acne outbreaks. The sebaceous glands contain receptors for stress hormones, so increased stress does result in increased sebum production. BUT, there’s another way stress affects the skin: it increases the urge to touch and pick the skin, causing more acne and slower healing of the lesions.

It is believed that Vitamin B5 supports the adrenal glands, which helps reduces stress and anxiety levels. Vitamins B9 and B12 balance depressive moods. Vitamin B6, together with magnesium, can balance out the anxiety that occurs in conjunction with PMS.

Having enough magnesium is essential for proper nerve and muscle function. We already know that a majority of Americans consume less magnesium than they should. This deficiency is particularly problematic when dealing with stress because magnesium plays a significant role in regulating the stress response.

Zinc is another mineral required for overall health and mental well-being. It’s found in the brain’s highest concentrations, especially in the hippocampus, and plays a vital role in modulating your stress response. Zinc is required to synthesize GABA and balance the activity of this calming neurotransmitter. Along with Vitamin B6, zinc is also a cofactor in the production of serotonin.

What Are The Effects Of Selenium On Our Skin

While it’s best called an antioxidant, this essential mineral is a part of over two dozen proteins which affect reproduction, the manufacturing of DNA, thyroid function, and immune reaction.

Our immune system relies on selenium to operate well. Selenium together with other nutritional supplements strengthens the human body’s army of white blood cells to fight infections on our skin, including acne infections.

Selenium can help reduce the production of inflammatory cytokines which are molecules that can build up in the body and harm healthy skin leading to redness.

Multivitamins Are Low In Acne

Not only do vitamins contain too much of the wrong stuff, but they contain very few bioavailable skin-clearing nutrients.

For instance, many vitamins contain high amounts vitamin A in the form of beta carotene, a form of vitamin A that is extremely inefficient for the body to use. Other vitamins may be high in certain B-vitamins vitamin C, or vitamin E, but not the right type. Most vitamins contain folic acid or ascorbic acid, which are forms of vitamin B and vitamin C that arent easily converted into usable nutrients.

Unless its a real, whole-food-based multivitamin , odds are youre just flushing money down the drain by buying multivitamins for your skin.

Still, there are some supplements that may be necessary for clear skin.

Low Dose Birth Control Pills

These tablets and devices are low in Estrogen and, therefore, tend to increase the bodies Androgen levels as the Estrogen drop. Think of a teeter-totteras one goes down the other goes up.

As a general rule of thumb, those with the potential for higher androgenic symptoms should be avoided for people prone to acne because they promote breakouts. As an acne sufferer, it is critical to speak with your doctor about selecting a form of birth control that is higher in estrogen and lower in androgen potency.

SOLUTION: Take out the IUD or come off the low-dose birth control pill and switch to a safe tablet if you are on birth control for a said reason. With that said, it is ok to be on certain types of birth control to prevent pregnancy and keep your skin clear.
