May Worsen Insomnia Symptoms

Supplements: The health benefits of fish oil

Yes, better sleep is listed as one of the pros of fish oil, but some research suggests too much of the stuff could interfere with sleep.

A March 2015 study in Oxford Medical Case Reports reveals that, for one patient with a history of depression, taking a high dose of fish oil worsened symptoms of insomnia and anxiety. Still, more research is needed to determine fish oil’s general effect on sleep.

You May Have Better Heart Health

Lowering your blood pressure isn’t the only cardioprotective effect you can enjoy when you take fish oil supplements.

“Fish oil can also reduce triglycerides,” says D’Angelo, citing research published in Biochimica et Biophysica Acta in 2012. “These fats are important sources of energy, but too much can hurt your heart health. Long chain omega-3 fatty acids are another big reason why triglycerides can be reduced.” And for more incentive to add some fish oil to your routine, check out these Side Effects of Taking Fish Oil Every Day, According to Experts.

Does Fish Oil Help With Memory

Yes, because the omega-3 fatty acids found in fish support good brain health, these nutrients also support the functions of the brain which, of course, includes thinking and memory.

We have pretty good evidence on fish intake and its role in brain health. From meta-analyses and large cohorts of healthy adults, a higher fish intake is associated with a lower rate of memory decline over time, as well as a lower risk of developing Alzheimers disease, says Dr. Agarwal.

In a study published in the American Journal of Epidemiology in May 2018 that looked at data from 23,688 people from five pooled cohorts, older adults who consumed four or more servings of fish per week experienced less memory loss over four to nine years of follow-up compared with people who typically consume less than one serving per week. That was the equivalent, researchers say, to having a brain that was four years younger. Another study published in JAMA in February 2016 found that moderate seafood consumption was associated with lower risk of having markers of Alzheimers disease than lower seafood consumption.

Fish, eaten at least one time per week, is an important component of the MIND diet, which has been shown to delay age-related cognitive decline, according to a September 2015 study in Alzheimers & Dementia.

Does That Mean Fish Oil Will Make Me Smarter

The fish oil you get from eating healthy amounts of fish each week is good for your brain. Thats clear. But its not necessarily the case that higher amounts of fish oil necessarily boosts your cognitive abilities above and beyond the benefit youll get from simply getting enough fish oil from fish.

Taking fish oil will not make you smarter or help you remember more if you already have an adequate intake , explains Hussein Yassine, MD, an endocrinology physician with Keck Medicine of USC in Los Angeles and associate professor of medicine at USC’s Keck School of Medicine

Unfortunately, if youre already at baseline, more is not going to be better. This is not an ‘intelligent pill,’ you cant take it and start remembering things, he adds.

Where Do We Stand

Back to my patients who want to know if they should be taking an omega-3 supplement. With the availability of todays data, I would recommend a pure EPA supplement, or one that contains more EPA than DHA. But dont stop there. Eat a heart-healthy diet, get regular exercise, and pursue other lifestyle changes that have proven benefits for cardiovascular health. In the meantime, my colleagues and I wait for more definitive data on the utility of omega-3 fish oil, and who might benefit the most.

How Often Should You Take Fish Oil

The American Heart Association recommends eating two, 3.5-ounce servings of fatty fish per week.5 This equates to a daily fish oil intake of roughly 500 milligrams EPA and DHA. If you dont eat fish at least twice per week , you may benefit from taking a daily fish oil supplement. When should fish oil be taken? Because all omega-3 supplements are absorbed more efficiently with meals, it might help to divide your daily dose into two or three smaller doses throughout the day to decrease the risk of gastrointestinal side effects.7

If Your Metabolism Is Healthy Your Body Can Make Fish Oil

Not all omega-3 is created equal. Theres a common form of omega-3 and a very special form of omega-3. Omega 3 is a kind of fatty acid and it comes in different lengths. Lots of plant and animal foods contain shorter omega-3, but the omega-3 in fish oil is unusually long. Our bodies need both the shorter, 18 carbon form and the unusually long, 20 carbon-plus forms.

If your metabolism is healthy, you can elongate any 18 carbon omega-3 fatty acid into a 20 plus carbon omega-3 fatty acid, thus in a sense manufacturing your own fish oil. If your metabolism is not healthy, the enzymes that elongate omega-3 are not functional.

Theres actually a blood test that you can easily get that will give you a good idea as to whether your body can elongate omega 3 fatty acids. I talk about that in the video below as well as the simple blood test youve probably already had that will tell you if your metabolism is healthy enough to make its own fish oil from ordinary foods containing omega-3.
