Because the current shower, which only provides water, is no longer enough?
Foods High In Vitamin C
Vitamin C occurs naturally in a whole host of fruits and vegetables. Some delicious, whole foods that give me natural vitamin C benefits are:
- Citrus fruits are a great source of vitamin C. These include oranges, grapefruit, guava, kiwi, lemons, lime, pineapple, and more.
Make sure to get around 65-90mg of vitamin C a day as a healthy adult, and around 120mg a day when breastfeeding, to get the benefits. To put this in practical terms, 1 orange has approximately 51mg of vitamin C. 1 cup chopped kale has 80 mg. Basically, a green smoothie a day will keep your body happy and vitamin C-boosted.

May Improve Your Eye Health
Studies have shown that vitamin C may benefit eye health, due to its antioxidant effects. Evidence shows a combination of nutrients, specifically vitamin c, e, beta-carotene, and zinc, collectively known as the AREDS formulation may reduce the risk of developing advanced age-related macular degeneration
The Age-Related Eye Disease Study which was initiated in 1990 by the National Eye Institute, involved 11 centers in the United States and enrolled 5000 patients. The study found that with a combination of vitamins c, e, beta-carotene, and zinc produced a 25% reduction in risk of progression to advanced AMD.
Although the benefits associated with age-related macular degeneration cannot be attributed to vitamin C alone, the combination of nutrients has been shown to slow the progression of AMD by 25% and loss of visual sharpness and clarity by 15% .
Ascorbate is found in the lens of the eye. Studies have shown that supplementation with just 2g of vitamin C per day was associated with a nearly 40-fold increase in lens ascorbate . In the Nutrition Vision Project , a subset of the Nurses’ Health Study, showed that women aged 60 years, with consumption of at least 363mg/day vitamin C was associated with a 57% decreased risk of developing a cortical cataract compared with women who consumed less than 140mg/day vitamin C .

Increase Therapeutic Effect Of Drugs
Several scientific studies have also shown that ascorbic acid can increase the therapeutic effect of different drugs and medicines.
What does this mean? It makes these drugs more effective, and thus, less of the drug is required it its taken in combination with large amounts of ascorbic acid.
For example, by taking large enough doses of ascorbic acid:
- Diabetics could reduce insulin requirement
- Analgesic users can increase its analgesic effect and lessen its toxic action on the body
A personal story…
I very rarely take drugs nowadays. Once or twice a year I may take something to help with a headache.
When I do that, I always make sure I take larger doses of ascorbic acid at the same time to enhance the drug response and prevent any unexpected side effects.
This results of this scientific study prove how ascorbic acid can protect against side effects of common analgesics.

Vitamin C As A Natural Antihistamine
In addition to supporting the immune system, vitamin C also acts as a natural antihistamine, which is great news for anyone who suffers from allergies.
Histamines are inflammatory compounds that are a normal part of immune response but when they overreact in certain instances, they can cause an allergic reaction. Vitamin C can help temper that allergic response of seasonal allergies, but understand it is not a treatment for severe allergic reactions, so call your doctor or seek immediate medical care if this is what youre experiencing.
Histamines can also play a role in PMS. Histamine in your body, while part of the normal female cycle, can create issues, causing anxiety, migraines, and period pain. Taking vitamin C regularly might help with PMS symptoms that are a result of inflammation caused by histamines.

May Help With Macular Degeneration And Lower The Risk Of Cataracts
Macular degeneration is the leading global cause of vision loss, and it affects millions of people around the world.
Although the condition cannot be cured, the existing evidence demonstrates that it is possible to slow the diseases progression.
According to the American Optometric Association, 500 mg or higher intake of vitamin C per day can slow progression .
Additionally, numerous studies show that a high intake of vitamin C may reduce the risk of developing cataracts .
However, this data on cataracts is far from confirmed.
A recent systematic review of controlled studies found no evidence that vitamin C can prevent cataracts from forming .

Vitamin C For Better Progesterone Levels

Helps Maintain Bones And Cartilage
Vitamin C plays a big part in keeping our cartilage and bones strong by helping our bodies to make collagen. Collagen is the most abundant protein in our bodies and acts as a scaffold to provide structure and strength.
About 90% of the matrix proteins in our bones are collagen, so it makes sense that it is good for our bones and cartilage.
Some research suggests that higher vitamin C intake appears to be associated with higher bone mass density and lower bone loss. Very high vitamin C levels have also been seen to help protect against hip and other bone fractures.6
Another micronutrient needed for strong and healthy bones is calcium, so try this calcium and vitamin C recipe for a double whammy of bone support.

Vitamin C And Tissue Healing
It is also fairly understood that wound healing requires synthesis and accumulation of collagen and subsequent cross-linking of the fibre to give new tensile strength to the damaged tissue. An early study demonstrated that maximum tensile strength of scar tissue in guinea pig was achieved after supplementation of vitamin C . Since then various studies have been carried out to evaluate the role of AA in wound repair and healing/regeneration process as it stimulates collagen synthesis. Adequate supplies of AA are necessary for normal healing process especially for post-operative patients because there is rapid utilization of AA for the synthesis of collagen at the site of wound/burns during post-operative period hence, administration of 500 mg to 1.0 g/day of AA are recommended to accelerate the healing process . Of late, Jagetia et al. demonstrated that AA pre-treatment was beneficial in healing of irradiated wounds and suggested a vitamin C related therapeutic strategy to accelerate wound repair in such conditions and in the cases of combined injury situation.
How Much Vitamin C Should You Take
The recommended daily allowances for vitamin C intake for adults are:
- 75 mg for females
- 85 mg for pregnant females
- 120 mg for breastfeeding women
- 90 mg for males
Keep in mind that these suggestions are likely not high enough to achieve optimal levels of vitamin C in the body. Therapeutic doses are generally recommended in the 600-1000 mg per day range.
Clinically, Ive observed, as have many other clinicians experienced in nutritional therapy, that supplementation with much higher doses is more tolerable during an acute illness then may be otherwise. Remember, the studies on immunity have shown benefit with consistent daily supplementation and not initiation at onset of symptoms. But we also understand that during acute illness our vitamin C requirements can increase. Because we are animals that dont make vitamin C, there is an argument to be made that we need to increase our intake when were sick to support our body.
