Digestive Symptoms Of Histamine Intolerance

The following are gut symptoms that result from histamine intolerance. All of these symptoms are very similar to non-celiac gluten sensitivity and other gastrointestinal diseases as well.

Histamine intolerance is different from a food allergy. But, they can have similar treatments.

A food allergy causes the body to mount an immune response after eating allergic foods.

With histamine intolerance, your body doesnt have the ability to break down histamine in the body, which can result in a number of symptoms.

Our bodies normally break down histamine with DAO that is produced in the gut. DAO is also made in the uterine tissue as well. This enzyme prevents a buildup of histamine.

However, levels of DAO enzyme are often low in the blood in people who have histamine intolerance.

Levels of DAO in the blood, also known as serum diamine oxidase, may increase due to stress, so interpretation of lab values may be difficult.

Poor Methylation Mthfr And Histamine Intolerance

October 4, 2019 by Amber

If you have the MTHFR gene and histamine intolerance, you most likely have poor methylation, especially if you are deficient in B vitamins such as folate, vitamin B2, and vitamin B12. Having the MTHFR gene mutation, additional SNPs in the methylation pathway, or poor methylation can contribute to histamine intolerance as the primary function of the methylation pathway is to produce the methyl donor called SAMe . SAMe is a cofactor for the HNMT enzyme, which metabolizes intracellular histamine inside the cell.

Symptoms of poor methylation include histamine intolerance and all the symptoms associated with histamine intolerance. But what is the connection between poor methylation, MTHFR, and histamine intolerance?

The MTHFR gene mutation is 1 of the common SNPs in the methylation pathway, among others that can decrease the ability of the body to produce SAMe to help with the metabolism of histamine. Someone with SNPs in the MTHFR gene is even more prone to histamine intolerance if there is a deficiency in folate and vitamin B2 from the diet, as these two nutrients are needed for the MTHFR gene to function.

What Is Diamine Oxidase

Diamine oxidase is an enzyme that your body makes to break down histamine from foods. If your body doesn’t produce enough DAO, you may have diamine oxidase deficiency. â

Without enough of this enzyme, you can experience histamine intolerance, also called food histaminosis or enteral histaminosis. This can make you sick when you eat foods that contain histamine.

Some high-histamine foods include:â

  • Psoriasis

Risks Of Diamine Oxidase Supplements

One of the problems with histamine intolerance is that there arenât any tests that can diagnose it. So, while DAO supplements may help some symptoms, they may not be safe to take if you actually don’t have the condition.â

Also, there arenât any standards for making supplements, so you might find products with different recommendations and doses and unclear labels. These could be unsafe to consume.

Some supplements are made with animal kidney extracts, specifically kidneys from pork. This may be important if you follow religious or other dietary restrictions on animal products. â

Generally, though, there isnât enough quality research yet to know exactly how DAO supplements work and the safety of them. Larger studies with more people being treated for a longer period of time are necessary.

What Are The Causes Of Histamine Intolerance

A histamine intolerance means that the body has problems with breaking down histamine. There are two possible explanations for this:

  • Affected individuals have too much histamine for example, due to overproduction or absorption of histamine, histidine or other biogenic amines in the form of food or alcohol
  • There is too little or only the inactive form of the enzyme diamine oxidase in the body of the affected individual
  • The result is the same in both cases: there is too much histamine in the body.

Top 10 Best Vitamins For Histamine Intolerance Of 2022 Review And Buying Guide

It is fairly typical to be perplexed regarding which vitamins for histamine intolerance to buy. This difficulty occurs because to the wide variety of vitamins for histamine intolerance available on the market. To help you choose the finest vitamins for histamine intolerance available on the market, we have produced a detailed guide.

Should You Get Tested For Histamine Intolerance

    Histamine Intolerance

There are currently no tests that are proven to diagnose histamine intolerance, and though blood and urine levels of histamine can be measured, because histamine levels are so naturally variable depending on time of day and also when youve eaten, its just not a reliable way to test for this problem. Similarly blood levels of DAO can be measured, but these levels dont really correlate neatly with symptoms. Because its not a true allergic condition, allergy testing, including food allergy testing, is not useful.

The best way to test for histamine intolerance is through a low histamine diet, which I describe below. A reduction in symptoms on the diet, and a return of symptoms when higher histamine foods are re-introduced, suggests that there is histamine intolerance.

Its also important to remember that you can get checked for true allergies and other medical conditions that may lead to similar symptoms.

    Variety Of Food Is Essential

Low histamine diets, while very helpful in the beginning stages of treatment, can cause problems down the road. Too restrictive for too long of a period of time and you will not be getting many of these critical vitamins and minerals needed for optimal immune response, and breakdown of histamine.

With this in mind, you can see why a variety in your diet is so important for aiding the relieve of your histamine intolerance symptoms. Too few foods, and you wont have enough of these important nutrients that are intricately involved in the management of immune responses and the production, breakdown and metabolism of histamine.

Are Fermented Foods High In Histamine

Fermented foods typically get lumped into the high histamine food lists. But some of this is based on myths, not actual histamine content.

For example, fermented foods like sauerkraut, when analyzed for histamine amount, are measuring the amount of histamine content per 100 grams of food, which happens to be only around 0.6 mg per 100 grams.

Thats a lot of sauerkraut: about ¼ pound. Most people really wouldnt eat more than 10 grams of sauerkraut at a time, which translates to about 0.06 mg of histamine.

This is a very small amount of histamine.

In other words, most people, even with histamine intolerance, can probably enjoy some sauerkraut. Histamine intolerance supplements can help if you cant tolerate sauerkraut.

The same goes for fermented soy foods.

Some fermented foods with Bifidobacterium probiotics may actually help scavenge histamine and help histamine intolerance. These include yogurt, kefir, and buttermilk.

    Histamine Intolerance Treatment: Colon Therapy

A healthy colon can contribute to an improved production of the histamine-degrading enzyme DAO. If your intestinal mucosa is inflamed or there is damage to the cells of the intestinal epithelium, the enzyme can no longer be produced sufficiently. A bad colonisation of bacteria in the intestine can be another problem. Colon therapy can remedy this situation and promote the production of DAO enzymes again. Supporting this colonisation with microorganisms at least once a year is the basic building block for this. It is worth it, because an acquired histamine intolerance can be reduced or even cured.

What To Do With High B

What Causes Allergies? What are the Missing Nutrients in Allergies â Dr.Berg

The first thing I recommend you do if you have a high B-12 level, is find out if your cells are getting adequate B-12 levels to begin with. To do this, you want to run two tests called methylmalonic acid and homocysteine. If these two test are normal then you could likely assume that you do have adequate B-12 levels. By normal, for simplicity sake, we can use the lab reference range for normal. So if normal, then you do have adequate B-12 levels. Keep in mind that there can be problems with these tests too, but all in all, if normal there is adequate B-12.

Another way to look at this is to distinguish if you do or do not have B-12 deficiency symptoms, regardless if you have adequate B-12 level per lab values. If you have symptoms of B-12 deficiency and your methylmalonic acid and homocysteine levels are high, then it’s clear you want to treat for B-12 deficiency. However, you still should dig deeper, try to find out why the B-12 level is high and make sure that there’s nothing more going on .

On the other hand, if your homocysteine and methylmalonic are low but you still have B12 deficiency symptoms, you may still want to treat for B12 deficiency. There are various ways to go about that. However, in the case that your labs are showing normal homocysteine and methylmalonic acid, then use more caution using B-12 and focus more on finding the cause . The main reason for this distinction is that the symptoms of b-12 deficiency can have many different causes.

    Magnesium Supplements For Histamine Intolerance

Most people are low in magnesium. Supplements of magnesium can both support a healthy gut and support your bodys own natural immunity.

So, when it comes to histamine, magnesium has an indirect effect because it helps the body make DAO.

Make sure to try a healthy kind of magnesium.

    • Oxy-Powder is a natural form of magnesium, and can be used if you are constipated.
    • Magnesium glycinate is a good choice because it is relaxing, absorbs well, and is less likely to have laxative effects.

How To Reduce Histamine In The Body Naturally

    DAO Deficiency

    1. Chronically high stress has been found to increase the release of many hormones, use up calming neurotransmitters, and release inflammatory substances such as histamine. Therefore reducing or managing physical and emotional stress can decrease histamine levels in the body. This should be one of your top priorities.

    2. Eat a low histamine diet. There are many approaches to starting a low histamine diet, but the first step is to avoid all high histamine foods, as this can also help to decrease the amount of histamine in the body without requiring you to overhaul your diet in one go. High histamine foods include any fermented foods such as sauerkraut, wine and beer, aged meats and cheeses, olives, tomatoes, vinegars, kombucha, most seafood, and spinach.

This may sound like a lot of foods to cut out, and if thats the case, for you it may just be easier to jump into following a low histamine diet that outlines only what you can eat. But rest assured, after just 3-4 weeks eating low histamine, your symptoms should subside and if not, youll need to talk to your doctor about other potential causes for your allergy symptoms.

I hope this post has helped you figure out a few new ways to support your bodys natural histamine-clearing pathways, as well as fight inflammation in other ways. Do you have any more tips for clearing histamine without antihistamines or H2 blockers?

    What Can I Still Eat

Fortunately, there are many foods that do not contain any, or only a very small amount of histamine. The rule is that the longer you leave a product, the more histamine is produced. So choose fresh food as much as possible, dont store it too long and dont heat up leftovers. If you want to keep food longer, freeze it to prevent further production of histamine. Examples of low histamine foods are:

    • Fresh meat, preferably white meat
    • Fresh fish or fish from the freezer
    • Fresh vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, carrots and kale
    • Fresh fruit such as apple
    • Beans and other legumes
    • Vegetable milk
    • Fresh herbs

The signs and symptoms of a histamine intolerance can be very similar to an allergic reaction, even though there is no allergy involved. In addition, they can vary greatly from person to person. Common symptoms of histamine intolerance are:

    • Headaches
    • Feeling of fog in the head
    • Palpitations
