Can I Put Garlic In Water And Drink It

Nutrition Advice : Health Risks & Benefits of Garlic

Its no secret that garlic has a strong, raw taste. However, once mixed with other ingredients it becomes palatable to consume. Heres how to consume garlic with water:

  • Put about three cups of water in a large vessel.
  • Grate five garlic cloves and add them to the water in the vessel.
  • Bring this concoction to a boil and cover it with a lid during this process.
  • Once the drink is adequately boiled, add about 10ml of honey.
  • Then squeeze one lemon in the mix.
  • Then carefully strain this mixture and consume it when hot.

May Support Bone Health

Animal studies suggest garlic may minimise bone loss by increasing oestrogen levels in female rodents. A study in post-menopausal women found a similar effect when a daily dose of dry garlic extract was consumed.

Studies also suggest the consumption of garlic may give some relief from the inflammatory symptoms of osteoarthritis.

Trial Design And Participants

Adults with uncontrolled hypertension were sought to participate in the double-blind randomized placebo-controlled parallel 12-week trial investigating the effect of aged garlic extract on blood pressure, central haemodynamic measures including pulse wave velocity, inflammatory markers, and the gut microbiome. Participants were eligible, if they were on an established plan of blood pressure medication for at least 2 months, or were not taking any blood pressure medication, and their doctor was not planning to change current treatment during the trial. We excluded adults with unstable medical conditions or serious illness, at the discretion of the GP, pregnancy, severe hypertension , those planning surgery in the next 34 months, or with a history of intestinal surgery, inflammatory bowel disease, celiac disease, lactose intolerance, chronic pancreatitis, or diagnosed malabsorption disorder. Additionally, participants were not enrolled, if they had been on antibiotic treatment within the last 2 months of study enrolment, taking prescribed anti-inflammatory agents, glucocorticoids, or other immune regulating prescription medication. Potential participants were advised to cease any probiotics or garlic supplementation at least 2 months prior to trial enrolment.

What Makes Garlic Special

Garlics odoriferous flavor comes from sulfur compounds made from allicin, an active ingredient once thought to be responsible for the health benefits of garlic. But it has as many as 40 other compounds, and any number or combination of them may be responsible for its healthfulness, says Matthew Budoff, M.D., a professor of medicine at the Los Angeles Biomedical Research Institute who studies the effects of garlic on cardiovascular health.

Most of the studies on the health benefits of garlic used garlic supplements because they provide a consistent dose, though others used garlic powder, garlic oil, and a Japanese method of preparing garlic that involved kneading and pulverizing crushed garlic together with egg yolk.

Budoff says the strongest evidence for the health claims suggests that garlic may help the heart, with data overall showing about a 10 percent reduction in cholesterol and a three to eight point drop in blood pressure.

That isnt quite as good as cholesterol or blood pressure pills,” he says, “but its certainly a nice effect.

A review of studies published in the journal Neurological Research in March, for instance, concluded that garlic and some of its various preparations could be a helpful side therapy for those already being treated for cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and diabetes and potentially may even reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke.

Garlic For Better Hair Growth

Hair loss happens to both men and women, and so many of us are susceptible to its wide range of causes. Stress, a buildup of free radicals in your body, and a poor diet are some of the factors that can contribute to hair loss and thinning hair at any age. Eating raw garlic or taking a garlic supplement can give you the nutrients your hair needs to flourish including vitamins B6, vitamin C, manganese, and selenium.

Applying garlic oil to your hair or using a hair lotion or serum that contains garlic as its active ingredient is shown to reduce bald spots and promote hair growth. It increases microcirculation in your scalp so that hair follicles can get the oxygen and nutrients they need from your blood.

Research also shows that garlic fights heat damage and UV damage in your hair, so applying garlic oil as a conditioner can help keep it shiny, healthy and strong.

The antimicrobial activity of garlic also fights dandruff, which is often caused by bacteria formation in the hair follicles. Rake garlic oil through your hair from the scalp to the ends of your hair until the oil is thoroughly applied. Let it sit for 30 minutes to an hour before you wash your hair.

How Much Garlic Should I Use

Garlic cloves vary not merely in size, but also in intensity of flavor depending on the source, age, and other factors. With experience, youll gain a sense of this, partly from the aroma and feel of the garlic.

Generally recommended consumption for adults is 4 g of raw garlic per day.

Potential Health Benefits Of Garlic

Medical research links garlic to a number of health benefits. Garlic tea retains the health benefits of raw garlic, as long as it is prepared properly: the key is boiling your crushed garlic no longer than 3 minutes.

Cardiac Health

Researchers at Emory University School of Medicine found that a component of garlic oil, diallyl trisulfide, helps protect the heart after a heart attack and during heart surgery. Mice that received this component after a heart attack had 61% less damage to the affected cardiac tissue than untreated mice.

The research also suggested that the component could reduce heart enlargement in a mouse model of heart failure. Further research is needed to understand the effects on humans.

Garlic supplements, and in particular aged garlic extract, have also been shown to reduce blood pressure in people with hypertension. It appears to do so in part by preventing vasoconstriction, or narrowing of blood vessels. While garlics effects are comparable to standard blood-pressure drugs, it has been found that people who have inadequate levels of vitamin B may not experience this benefit.

Sadly, 1 in 8 American women develop breast cancer in their lifetime. Test tube studies have shown that garlic contains anti-cancer actions that are effective against breast cancer cells. A compound in raw garlic called allicin can induce apoptosis in breast cancer cells. In other words, it kills them. By killing cancer cells before full-blown cancer can develop or spread, raw garlic taken regularly may help with cancer prevention in women.

Garlic Is Easy To Include In Your Diet And Tastes Absolutely Delicious

The last one is not a health benefit, but is still important.

Garlic is very easy to include in your current diet.

It complements most savory dishes, particularly soups and sauces. The strong taste of garlic can also add a punch to otherwise bland recipes.

Garlic comes in several forms, from whole cloves and smooth pastes to powders and supplements like garlic extract and garlic oil.

However, keep in mind that there are some downsides to garlic, such as bad breath. There are also some people who are allergic to it.

If you have a bleeding disorder or are taking blood-thinning medications, talk to your doctor before increasing your garlic intake.

A common way to use garlic is to press a few cloves of fresh garlic with a garlic press, then mix it with extra virgin olive oil and a bit of salt.

This a healthy and super satisfying dressing.

    Summary

Garlic is delicious and easy to add to your diet. You can use it in savory dishes, soups, sauces, dressings and more.
