How Much Biotin Does A Person With A Biotin Deficiency Need

Vitamin b7, biotin

Those with biotinidase deficiency usually start with a dose of 520 milligrams per day.

However, those who do not have biotinidase deficiency should first try to get enough biotin from their diet, as dietary biotin also enhances the intake of other beneficial nutrients that work alongside it.

A person should always speak to a doctor before taking supplements and choose brands carefully, as supplements are not monitored by the FDA.

The Top Dozen Biotin Foods

There are lots of weird or uncommon foods that have biotin in them. However, I find myself likelier to actually eat foods that I am already familiar with. You might be the same. So, my list of the top 12 biotin foods may not be the top overall, but they are the ones that you might like the best.

Many of these biotin-rich foods are probably ones that you are already eating. If so, you can give yourself an excuse to eat more of the foods you like. Blame in on the biotin, and claim you were craving it!

Signs Of Deficiency And Toxicity

Deficiency

A biotin deficiency in the U.S. is rare, as most people eat enough biotin in a varied diet. Alcoholism can increase the risk of biotin deficiency and many other nutrients as alcohol can block their absorption, and also because alcohol abuse is generally associated with a poor dietary intake. About a third of pregnant women show a mild biotin deficiency despite eating adequate intakes, though the exact reason is not clear.

Symptoms appearing with a biotin deficiency:

  • Thinning hair
  • Scaly skin rashes around eyes, nose, mouth
  • Brittle nails

Toxicity

No evidence in humans has shown a toxicity of biotin even with high intakes. Because it is water-soluble, any excess amount will leave through the urine. There is no established upper limit or toxic level for biotin.

Biotin Supplement Side Effects

Biotin supplements have few side effects if you take them as directed. Biotin supplements and B-complex vitamins are safe for most people, though they may cause a slightly upset stomach, Barth says.

High-dose biotin supplements can also interfere with certain medical test results, so tell your healthcare provider if youre taking them, advises Barth.

Biotin and other B vitamins are water-soluble, so its hard to overdose on them. If you take in more biotin than you need, your body doesnt store it, Barth explains. You naturally get rid of excess biotin and other B vitamins when you urinate.

Still, more is not always better. Dont take more than the dosage listed on the package and stop taking biotin if you notice side effects.

Learn About Your Vitamins And Minerals: Biotin And Chromium

Biotin 800 mg by PN

Inspired by the Sight and Life publication Vitamins and Minerals: A Brief Guide, we continue with our Learn About Your Vitamins and Minerals series by discussing biotin and chromium.

Biotin

Biotin, also known as vitamin B7 or vitamin H, is a water-soluble vitamin. It is essential for a group of enzymes called carboxylases, which are essential for the metabolism of carbohydrates, proteins, and fatty acids into energy. Biotin also helps in the regulation of signals sent by cells, and in gene activity.

Some amount of biotin can be found in many foods. Good sources of biotin include beef, organ meats, poultry, cooked eggs, fish , seeds, nuts, and some vegetables like sweet potatoes. Biotin can also be synthesized by intestinal bacteria.

The level of biotin in foods is affected by various factors. For example, seasonal changes may affect the concentration of biotin in cereal grains. Some methods of food processing like canning can reduce the levels of biotin in foods. The ability of protein enzymes in the stomach to convert protein-bound biotins to free biotin can also affect its bioavailability. For example, dietary avidin binds strongly to biotin in foods and limits its bioavailability. Cooking the egg white denatures avidin thus, increasing the bioavailability of biotin in the intestines.

Chromium

Good sources of chromium are beef, poultry, egg yolk, fish, whole grains, nuts, broccoli, coffee, and brewers yeast.

Next in this series, we discuss vitamin B2 and vitamin K.

Is Biotin Really Necessary

Biotin is essential for the conversion of certain nutrients into energy by your cells. Its also important in hair, skin, and nail health. Hair loss or a scaly red rash might occur if you dont get enough biotin. A deficiency is nevertheless uncommon.

Your body needs B7 to break down carbohydrates, fats, and amino acids. Biotin is how your body makes protein.

What Do Biotin Supplements Do

Both biotin and pantothenic acid are involved in the breakdown of carbohydrates, fats and protein from foods and in the production of enzymes. Biotin plays a special role in helping the body use glucose, its basic fuel and it promotes healthy nails and hair. The body needs pantothenic acid to maintain proper communication between the brain and nervous system and to produce certain stress hormones.

Biotin may improve the quality of weak and brittle fingernails and may help slow hair loss if you have biotin deficiency. It is often found in hair and skin-care products. Research suggests that the overproduction of stress hormones during long periods of emotional upset, depression or anxiety increases the need for pantothenic acid, which is used to manufacture these hormones.

According to a study from Switzerland, biotin can increase the thickness of nails by an average of 25 per cent. Six months of taking biotin supplements improved brittle nails in two-thirds of the studys participants.

Biotin helps keep hair healthy, butexcept in rare cases of biotin deficiencyit cant prevent baldness, as some claim. Nor can pantothenic acid forestall the normal greying of hair that occurs with age.

Deficiency As A Result Of Metabolic Disorders

Biotinidase deficiency is a deficiency of the enzyme that recycles biotin, the consequence of an inherited genetic mutation. Biotinidase catalyzes the cleavage of biotin from biocytin and biotinyl-peptides and thereby recycles biotin. It is also important in freeing biotin from dietary protein-bound biotin. Neonatal screening for biotinidase deficiency started in the United States in 1984, which as of 2017 was reported as required in more than 30 countries.

Profound biotinidase deficiency, defined as less than 10% of normal serum enzyme activity, which has been reported as 7.1 nmol/min/mL, has an incidence of 1 in 40,000 to 1 in 60,000, but with rates as high as 1 in 10,000 in countries with high incidence of consanguineous marriages . Partial biotinidase deficiency is defined as 10% to 30% of normal serum activity. Incidence data stems from government mandated newborn screening. For profound deficiency, treatment is oral dosing with 5 to 20 mg per day. Seizures are reported as resolving in hours to days, with other symptoms resolving within weeks. Treatment of partial biotinidase deficiency is also recommended even though some untreated people never manifest symptoms. Lifelong treatment with supplemental biotin is recommended for both profound and partial biotinidase deficiency.

How Do I Take Biotin Supplements

Micronutrient Monday – Biotin aka Vitamin B7 – Benefits of Biotin – Best Sources of Biotin on Keto

Most people will get enough biotin and pantothenic acid from a daily multivitamin or a B-complex supplement. Individual supplements are necessary only to treat a specific disorder. An adequate intake of pantothenic acid is 6 milligrams a day for men and 4 milligrams for women, increasing to 5 milligrams during pregnancy and 6 milligrams when breastfeeding. The figures for biotin are 30 micrograms a day for men and 25 for women, increasing to 30 micrograms during pregnancy and 35 micrograms when breastfeeding.

These vitamins can be found in tablets, capsules and creams. Multivitamins and B-complex vitamins usually include biotin and pantothenic acid , and both are also available as individual supplements. The main form of biotin is D-biotin. Pantothenic acid comes in two forms: pantethine and calcium pantothenate. The latter is suitable for most purposes and is less expensive than pantethine.

For hair and nails: take 1000 to 1200 micrograms of biotin a day.

For diabetes: talk with your doctor about taking high doses of biotin to help or even prevent diabetic neuropathy. Diabetic neuropathy improvements may be noticed in 1 to 3 months.

For wound healing: dexpanthenol cream 5 per cent once or twice a day. To lower cholesterol take 300 milligrams of pantethine three times a day.

In most cases, take individual supplements with meals. Take pantothenic acid with water after meals.

Do Biotin Supplements Help With Hair Growth

Maybe youre not worried about biotin deficiency but wonder whether a biotin supplement could help you get amazing hair. After all, many products advertise biotin as a hair growth booster.

No studies have proven that biotin supplements will change the appearance of your hair, skin or nails, Barth says. But some people find that taking a biotin supplement helps them boost hair and nail growth. Its usually not harmful to try biotin for thicker hair or healthier nails.

If you decide to take a supplement, be patient. It takes several months to see new hair or nail growth, notes Barth. Biotin may be worth a try if your doctor gives you the go-ahead. But its not a guarantee that youll see a major change in your appearance.

Helps In Pregnancy And Breastfeeding

To help promote baby health vitamin B7 is important throughout pregnancy and while nursing your baby.

Vitamin B7 foods provide the optimum advantages for both pregnancy and breastfeeding. In this case, not only do you profit from biotin but so does your kid.

As with many other supplements, biotin hasnt been tested for safety in pregnant women, nursing mothers, children, and those with medical conditions or who are taking medications.

Pregnant women are sometimes known to have biotin deficiencies. Take a prenatal vitamin that includes biotin and folic acid throughout pregnancy to assist your childs health. However, high doses of biotin can be harmful to the babys health, so extra biotin supplementation is not advised.

What Effects Does Biotin Have On The Body

You have probably seen biotin in drugstores or cosmetic boutiques. Biotin belongs to the vitamin B complex and like most members of this group, it has all-round benefits:

  • Biotin supports the energy metabolism
  • Biotin helps with macronutrient metabolism, i.e. with utilizing fats, carbohydrates and protein
  • Biotin supports the nervous system
  • Biotin helps maintain normal mental function
  • Biotin plays a role in maintaining the mucous membranes

Biotin is also known for its supporting role in maintaining skin and hair. The older name “vitamin H” refers to this connection to skin and hair.

Biotin Can Improve Glucose Intolerance And Help Balance Blood Sugar

Maxi Hair Plus Biotin Hair Skin and Nails Supplement

Biotin, particularly when combined with chromium, has been shown to help lower blood sugar in people with diabetes. This is especially true for those people who have a blood sugar level that cannot be optimally controlled with prescription medication.

Biotin is beneficial for blood sugar because it supports the activity of insulin. Insulin is the most important hormone to bring the blood sugar back into a balanced state. Better insulin response helps reduce the risk of fluctuating blood sugar levels, which can lead to pre-diabetes, type 2 diabetes, weight gain, and various forms of metabolic metabolism syndrome.

Biotin reduces the production of enzymes that stimulate the production of glucose by the liver, which means that less sugar is released into the bloodstream. For this reason, a lack of biotin has been linked to impaired glucose tolerance and reduced glucose use, which are risk factors for diabetes. Biotin can also help reduce symptoms of existing diabetes, including nerve pain.
