Avena, author of âWhy Diets Failâ and âWhat to Eat When You’re Pregnantâ, concurs, explaining that these supplements “contain high levels of specific vitamins pregnant women need in order to develop a healthy fetus” â like folic acid and iron. “It is not recommended that men take prenatal supplements because of high levels of iron, which can build up in the body and become toxic,” she says.
