Vitamin D And Cardiovascular Disease

Clearing up confusion about vitamin D and fish oil supplements

A similar link between vitamin D levels and cardiovascular disease has been demonstrated in medical research.

Several studies have shown that lower vitamin D levels are associated with high blood pressure, elevated blood glucose, atherosclerotic plaque in blood vessels, arterial stiffness, and higher rates of cardiovascular events.10-19

In humans, vitamin D supplementation can reduce some of these markers of blood vessel disease. For example, 4,000 IU daily was shown to reduce arterial stiffness.15,19

One study evaluated the association of vitamin D and strokes, which often result from cardiovascular disease. Vitamin D status was measured in 3,316 patients with evidence of blood vessel disease who were followed for almost eight years. What scientists found was a dramatic increase in the number of fatal strokes for every incremental in vitamin D blood level.20

Large Study Sheds Light On Effectiveness Of Vitamin D Fish Oil In Preventing Heart Disease Cancer

A long-awaited research study funded largely by the NHLBI has produced some of the clearest evidence to date about the usefulness of taking the nutritional supplements vitamin D and fish oil to fight heart disease and cancer. But the results of the study were mostly negative in terms of achieving the studys primary endpoints: reduction of major cardiovascular events and a reduction in cancer.

The VITAL study , which began in 2009, included nearly 26,000 men and women across the United States. It is believed to be the largest primary prevention trial testing the health effects of these supplements in a community-based sample of adults.Overall, they showed that neither fish oil nor vitamin D actually lowered the incidence of heart disease or cancer,” said Lawrence Fine, M.D., chief of the Clinical Application and Prevention Branch at the NHLBI, in an interview with National Public Radio, one of more than 80 news outlets that covered the study. “At this point, if one is thinking about supplementation, either omega-3s or vitamin D, talking to your physician or health care provider is the next step,” Fine said.

The study results appeared in two papers on fish oil and vitamin D supplementation in The New England Journal of Medicine and were accompanied by an editorial on this topic. Researchers also presented the study simultaneously at the American Heart Association Scientific Sessions, on Nov. 10 in Chicago.

What Stops The Absorption Of Vitamin D

Some factors that may reduce or block its absorption include: Conditions such as celiac disease, chronic pancreatitis, Crohns disease, and cystic fibrosis. Its possible that these can affect the intestines, preventing them from absorbing the vitamins found in sunlight. Certain medications can also interfere with absorption.

For example, some anti-seizure medications, including phenytoin and phenobarbital, can block the absorption of Vitamin D from the skin. Other medications may block absorption by interfering with the bodys ability to make vitamin K, a cofactor for the enzyme that breaks down the fat-soluble vitamin.

Omega-6 fats, like linoleic and linolenic acids , are also good choices, as well as monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats like arachidonic acid and caprylic acid, which have been shown to have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.

To the Editor: As Dr. Oh1 points out in his article, fish oil supplementation has gained popularity in recent years because of the many health benefits of omega-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids . Dr. Ohs article provides a thorough review of the literature on this topic and recommendations for fish oil supplementation. However, although fish oil is an excellent source of omega-3 LCPUFAs, it doesnt provide the significant levels of vitamin D that cod liver oil does.2 Vitamin D is concentrated in the liver of the fish and thus plentiful in cod liver oil, a time-honored source of vitamin D. Fish oil is made from the whole body of the fish and has an insignificant amount of vitamin D.

Cod liver oil contains both vitamin D and omega-3 LCPUFAs.2 Individuals at higher risk for vitamin D deficiency may wish to consider substituting cod liver oil for fish oil supplementation.

But they also noted that taking supplements is not enough to stay health and keep diseases at bay. They advises people to also focus on lifestyle improvements, such as exercising regularly and eating healthy.

Can I Take Vitamin D And Omega

D3 and omega-3 supplementation may have bone, heart and kidney benefits. D is a fat-soluble vitamin that is found in the skin, liver, bones and other tissues of the body. D can be synthesized from the suns ultraviolet B radiation, but it is also produced in response to sunlight exposure. The amount of UVB radiation that reaches the earths surface varies depending on the time of year, the latitude, and the season.

Because of this, most of what we see on our skin comes from sunlight, not the other way around. However, sunlight can also be absorbed from other sources, such as the air we breathe or the water we drink. This is why its important to get enough sun exposure during the summer months, especially if you live in an area that gets a lot of direct sunlight.

A same-sized serving of sardine oil contains less vitamin D per serving, at only 4 percent of your daily recommended intake, but it is still significant.
