What Vitamin Deficiencies Cause Tremors

Vitamins are essential chemical compounds required for numerous biological processes in the body. Most vitamins can be found in different foods, and eating a healthy diet including a variety of fruits and vegetables is your best bet to consuming all of the essential vitamins. However, sometimes eating a healthy diet does not provide all the essential vitamins, leading to deficiencies that can cause a wide range of symptoms, including tremors. If you suspect you have a vitamin deficiency, consult your doctor.

Getting The Right Balance

A balanced diet will contain a wide variety of foods from the various food groups below. Ideally you should choose an item from each food group for each meal throughout the day as you will then obtain all the nutrients required by the body to keep it healthy, although for some this may not be possible.

Current general dietary recommendations include:

  • maintaining energy intake at 25-30 kilocalories per kilogram of body weight, with additional calories if dyskinesias are present
  • a carbohydrate to protein proportion of at least 4-5:1
  • a recommended daily protein allowance of 0.8g/kg of body weight.

Food groups

Carbohydrate

These starchy and/or sugary foods provide the basic fuel or energy your body needs as they break down once digested and produce glucose. Typical carbohydrates are bread, potatoes, pasta, rice, cereals, biscuits and cakes

Proteins

These are the basic building blocks for your body and are needed for growth and repairing the body. Typical proteins are meat, dairy products, nuts, pulses, eggs and fish

Fruit and vegetables

These are a good source of fibre and are essential for healthy bowels and avoiding constipation. They also contain some carbohydrate and many vitamins and minerals

Fats and sugars

Although fats and sugars can be harmful if consumed in large quantities, they are essential for producing energy and essential fatty acids are also needed for the efficient absorption of some key vitamins.

Symptoms Of A Deficiency

A severe deficiency of vitamin B-12 is rare, though a mild one is common. Even a mild deficiency can result in adverse effects, such as tremors associated with ataxia, or shaky movements and an unsteady gait. You may also experience spasticity, muscle weakness, impaired vision and incontinence. A deficiency can result in neurological problems like dementia, psychoses and mood swings. If left untreated, it can result in permanent neurological damage.

Tremors Yes Parkinson’s Disease No

Essential tremor is often mistaken for Parkinson’s disease, but the two conditions differ in several ways. Essential tremor is an action tremor, meaning that the involuntary shaking increases when you move and try to use your hands. In Parkinson’s disease, tremors occur mainly at rest, and activity reduces the symptoms. Some people with essential tremor develop head nodding or shaking few people with Parkinson’s do. Balance problems and rigidity of the arms and legs are common features of Parkinson’s disease but not of essential tremor. One of the hallmarks of essential tremor, useful in diagnosing the disorder, is that alcohol can temporarily ease symptoms in Parkinson’s, alcohol has little effect on the tremor.

Parkinson’s disease is marked by a progressive loss of brain cells that produce dopamine, a chemical messenger that enables normal body movements. Essential tremor also appears to involve a disruption in the activity of motor pathways, but it’s uncertain whether there is any loss of brain cells. Postmortem examinations of brain tissue taken from people with essential tremor reveal various abnormalities in the cerebellum and brainstem, including the loss of Purkinje cells, which produce an important neurotransmitter, called GABA. But the samples don’t all show the same changes, so the import of these findings is uncertain.

How Does Essential Tremor Develop

Essential tremor symptoms often first appear in a person’s 40s, when delicate movements such as threading a needle become difficult. But it’s usually not until people reach their 50s or 60s that the tremor becomes troublesome for example, making it difficult to use a fork, drink from a cup, or write a letter. Essential tremor progresses slowly. Though essential tremor may eventually affect the voice and head, many people find that their symptoms don’t progress beyond mild hand and arm tremor. Tremors are usually absent during sleep.

We don’t know the precise cause of essential tremor. Some experts believe that the problem lies in the cerebellum or its connections with the brainstem, which lies at the base of the brain. Essential tremor is a heritable condition. If you have essential tremor, your children will have a 50% chance of developing it as well.

What Are The Symptoms Of Essential Tremors

As you might not know about, essential tremors are more likely to locate in hands. Apart from that, the arms, eyelids, head or other muscles can be affected too. The tremor hardly occurs in both legs and feet however, the popular sign is that people with essential tremors can have difficulties in seizing as well as using small objects.

Hand shaking can start with small and rapid movements with over 5 times in a second. Another symptom can include:

  • Head nodding
  • Troubles with drawing, writing, drinking or using tools
  • Shaking to the voice if tremors influence the voice box

You also need to take a note that tremors might happen during movement and can be less accessible during rest. They can come and go, but frequently become worse with age, stress, and certain types of medication or caffeine. All the areas of the body are not affected by tremors in the same way.

Vitamins A Natural Alternative

Two published papers report case studies in which vitamins, with or without other supplements, appeared to control ET. It is interesting that both of these papers are from European countries. In 2001, a Scottish author, David Reilly, observed that in Europe, the demand for complementary and alternative medicine which includes nutrition is in part a search for a broader range of therapies, but is also a call for a different approach to care, with less emphasis on drugs, and a more whole-person approach.1

The first describes the situation of a 13-year old Croatian boy whose dream of being a guitar player was short-circuited by two years of tremors severe enough for him to give up his music. His medical work-up was unremarkable. There was no history of exposure to toxins, no family history of ET, brain and spine imaging with MRI was normal, as were his blood test results. He was not overweight, but every day he consumed foods and snacks high in refined sugar. Both he and his parents were opposed to pharmaceutical treatment for fear of side effects. Heres how his case was managed:

As remarkable as it might seem, by day 14 of embarking on a new diet and specific supplements high in B vitamins and other nutrients, his tremors had significantly subsided. Even more astonishing, by two months they had completely disappeared! The author writes, The patient continues on long-term therapy and has resumed playing his guitar to pursue his chosen career.

Essential Tremor Dystonia Anxiety And Cravings Diet Gaba Tryptophan Zinc And Vitamin B6

January 17, 2020 By Trudy Scott

Today Im sharing how diet, GABA, tryptophan, zinc, vitamin B6 and other B vitamins can resolve essential tremor and sugar cravings in 2 months, and also resolve musicians dystonia and social anxiety within 4 months.

According to Medical News Today essential tremor is a movement disorder that can cause hand tremors and is among the most common movement disorders. The tremor usually affects both sides of the body, but it may be more noticeable in the dominant hand. It tends to occur when the person is moving as well as when standing still. Genetics may be responsible for around half of the cases of essential tremor.

Vitamin Studies Shed Light On Essential Tremor And Nutrition

Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food. This quote, attributed to the ancient Greek physician Hippocrates, seems like forgotten advice in an age when drugs are heavily marketed to consumers as the pathway to health.

This promised pathway is a big disappointment for individuals with essential tremor . ET is the most common movement disorder, affecting individuals of all ages, though most new cases occur from middle age onward. We know a lot about how it is relayed from the brain to the shaky body part, but we still dont know why. Since we lack both a way to prevent it as well as a cure, medication is aimed at quieting brain activity that transmits tremors.

The two types of medication most frequently prescribed are beta blockers and anti-seizure medications . The disappointment is the fact that for roughly 50% of those with ET, the drugs dont work. Or, they start out working, but as tremors progress, so do the dosesuntil undesirable side effects lead to discontinued use.

Risks Of A Deficiency

5 Best Home Remedies For Hand Tremors

Vitamin B-12 occurs naturally in animal foods alone, so if you do not eat these or supplement your diet with fortified foods, you run the risk of developing a vitamin B-12 deficiency. Additionally, elderly people’s bodies cannot absorb this vitamin as efficiently as those who are younger, increasing their chances of becoming deficient. Your intestines may also be unable to absorb B-12 if you have a malabsorption condition like a tapeworm infection. Finally, consuming high doses of vitamin B-9 or folic acid can mask the symptoms of a B-12 deficiency until serious neurological damage occurs.

Essential Tremor And B12

B12, also known as Cobalamin, is a water-soluble vitamin that works in the metabolism of every cell. It is involved with DNA synthesis and amino acid metabolism. B12 is excreted by the Kidney. B12 is required for red blood cell formation, neurological function and DNA function. B12 is vital in the production of myelin, which is a fatty substance that insulates nerve fibers that are used in nerve interactions which may be linked to tremors. It is bound to protein in food, and is released by activity of hydrochloric acid. Foods that are high in B12 include foods with lots of protein such as eggs, milk, cheese, meat, fish, shellfish and poultry. Some rice and soy products are fortified with B12, but it is naturally found in these high protein foods.

Besides B12, other B vitamins are important in managing tremors and essential tremor symptoms. Nicotinamide, which is part of the B group, is a benzodiazepine- like substance that is well-known for providing partial symptomatic relief from the tremors of essential tremor, which can also reduce anxiety. Since anxiety can also cause tremors, Nicotinamide can also secondarily improve tremors.

Essential tremor isnt fully understood as far as the cause goes, but the understanding of treatment is improving, and it is important to eat a balanced diet and make sure that the proper vitamins are being consumed so that tremors do not worsen and can be managed to promote a healthy lifestyle.

Lack Of Vitamin B12 Can Cause Tremor Symptoms

As I wrote in Part I of this series, complementary and alternative medicine developed a large following during the last three or four decades. There is considerable interest in the preventive or therapeutic properties of substances such as herbs or mushrooms that occur naturally, and healing practices from other cultures.

What could be more natural than vitamins? Eating a healthy, well-rounded diet supplies these compounds that are needed for growth and for many bodily functions. We need vitamin intake because our bodies dont manufacture these building blocks internally. Despite the fact that research gives conflicting evidence on the value of taking multivitaminsi, most doctors recommend taking a good quality multivitamin daily. We now know that due to large-scale farming practices, our produce is not as healthy as what our grandparents ate. According to Scientific Americans Earth Talk blog, Modern intensive agricultural methods have stripped increasing amounts of nutrients from the soil in which the food we eat grows. Sadly, each successive generation of fast-growing, pest-resistant carrot is truly less good for you than the one before.ii

Dont Try This At Home

Could Tremors Be Just a Vitamin Deficiency? If YES – How To Prevent Vitamin And Mineral Deficiency?

If you or a loved one has ET, it may be appealing to think, Hey, why dont I just go pick up some vitamins and see if they work? First of all, you cant just run to your local pharmacy and pick up high-dose thiamine and hypodermic needles so the Italian approach is simply not an option.

As for the Croatian study, remember that the supplements prescribed for the teenager were administered under a doctors supervision, and in conjunction with a switch to the Mediterranean diet. Therefore, speak with your neurologist before deciding if you want to pursue such a course of action. It is especially important that your doctor be involved to objectively monitor your use and track any changes that may occur.

Keep in mind that these papers present anecdotal evidence with three individuals. This is considered a very low level of evidence and does not constitute proof. That said, I encourage a wellness lifestyle that includes heart-healthy nutrition, regular exercise, and stress management.

Heres to your health!

Herbal Remedies For Essential Tremors

The Mayo Clinic defines an essential tremor as a central nervous system disorder resulting in chronic shaking or rhythmic muscle spasms. These essential tremors may occur in nearly any portion of the body however, the most common areas of shaking are isolated within the hands, head, arms or legs. The majority of essential tremors are caused by some form of genetic mutation, and scientists are still undecided as to what mutation causes this condition. Treatment plans for those with essential tremors may consist of synthetic prescription medications and possibly surgery however, certain herbal remedies may be utilized upon the consent of your doctor to help reduce or relieve shaking.

Essential Tremor Diet Gaba Tryptophan And B Vitamins

This Croatian paper, Treatment of Essential Tremor with Multi-Modal Nutritional Therapy in a Teenage Patient, reports the case of a 13-year-old boy with causing severe functional impairment over the previous 2 years.

A multi-modal nutritional therapy approach was used to target three possible areas that could be contributing to the tremors: a poor diet that was high in sugar, low GABA levels and low serotonin. These changes were implemented:

diet

GABA and

L-tryptophan/vitamin B pathways .

The papers states: After two months of therapy, his tremor decreased significantly and he regained normal function.

Once the essential tremor resolved, this teen was able to resume his plans to pursue a musical career as a guitar player . What wonderful results!

Im thrilled to see tryptophan and GABA being used for this condition and am really pleased to read this case report. Here is my commentary on the supplements and doses he used for anyone wishing to try and replicate this nutritional approach .

Anxiety and low mood was not mentioned so I dont know if they were factors.

It appears sugar and carb cravings were very likely a factor given that his normal daily diet contained large amounts of refined sugars . The amino acids would have helped him with those cravings.

And now to share a very similar case in an adult male with a different and yet related approach.
