Many high-magnesium foods are also a good source of calcium, especially spinach, turnip greens, mustard greens, collard greens, green beans and sea vegetables. Other sources of calcium include dairy products, sardines, sesame seeds, broccoli and celery. The herbs basil, thyme, rosemary, oregano, dill and peppermint are also good sources of calcium, as is cinnamon.

Best B12 Vitamins To Use As A Supplement

According to Dr. Edward Group, there are four types of B12 supplements.

Methylcobalamin or the most active B12 in the body, protects the cardiovascular or nervous systems.

Cyanocobalamin is a synthetic version of the vitamin.

Hydroxocobalamin is created by bacteria, and is most often found if food sources of B12. It converts to methylcobalamin in the body.

Adenosylcobalamin is the least stable of all four forms.

Because vitamin B12 is often not absorbed from food sources, when taking the supplement, it is best to choose the most absorbable kind, which is methylcobalamin.

One natural, non-GMO B12 supplement is affordably sold by MegaFoods. If you are interested in a liquid kind instead, there is also vegan methylcobalamin B12 by the Garden of Life.

Vitamins and supplements get a bad rap sometimes, says Nicole Avena, PhD, an assistant professor at Mount Sinai Medical School and visiting professor of Health Psychology at Princeton University. Also, many vitamins contain sugar and other fillers which people often want to avoid.

Research on vitamins ability to help anxiety is still a bit cloudy, but theres been evidence that supplementation may help improve symptoms, especially in certain populations. A small 2019 of 51 women found that vitamin D supplementation improved symptoms of anxiety and inflammation in women with type-2 diabetes. Another study, performed in 2019 on more than 120 males, found that a six-week regimen of magnesium supplementation improved symptoms of anxiety and depression among 112 adult participants.

Taking supplements and vitamins for anxiety relief can address the three most significant biological factors that contribute to anxiety and panic attacks:

  • Low serotonin levels: While the role of serotonin in the brain is not completely understood, it has been found to play an important part in regulating mood and anxiety.
  • Low vitamin B6 levels: Vitamin B6 is an important component required for the body to make serotonin. Low vitamin B6 levels ultimately lead to low serotonin.

GABA is the brain chemical associated with relaxation.

When levels dip low, you may find yourself anxious, overstimulated, and overwhelmed, and youll find it hard to turn off your racing mind.

What Is The Best Time Of Day To Take Magnesium For Anxiety

I usually take around 600mg to 800mg spread out throughout the day.

Which for a 31-year-old female, youll notice Im taking double if not more my RDA.

Magnesium overdose is not very likely, with the Office of Dietary Supplements noting that very large doses of magnesium-containing laxatives and antacids have been associated with magnesium toxicity.

Personally, I find 600 to 800mg is the ideal daily amount for me, but I would encourage you to first talk to your physician if you are considering going over the RDA for any reason.

Ill take 200mg in the morning, 200mg in the afternoon and then 400mg before bed helps me to sleep like a baby.

If theres one thing I recommend starting today for your own anxiety struggles, its taking magnesium.

You may feel more chilled out, your mood will start to lift.

You wont have any stomach woes and youll sleep better, what could be better?

The worst that can happen from too much magnesium is looser stools but I think anyone would take that over a dark cloud of depression any day, I know I do!

Sorry if TMI, but you deserve to know!

Hopefully now you know a lot more about the connection between magnesium and anxiety. But, if youd like to learn even more about how great magnesium is for your overall mood and health, then check out this book, The Magnesium Miracle.

Weve come to the end, kudos for you if you made it all the way down here.

Vitamin B Complex Supplements

Eating a well-rounded diet of whole, unprocessed foods is a good start towards getting the B vitamins you need from your diet.

However, if you dont eat meat or dont get at least the recommended 9 servings a day of fruits and vegetables, you might be low in one or more of the B vitamins.

One of the most common questions about B vitamin supplementation is whether you should take individual B vitamins or a B complex supplement.

Eventually it can cause permanent nerve and brain damage.

The Recommended Dietary Allowance of vitamin B12 for adults is 2.4 micrograms .

When you read a B12 supplement label, youll find that it usually contains much more than this.

Because only about 2% of the B12 in supplements is actually absorbed, the excess assures that youre getting close to the RDA.

For these reasons, there are a lot of people out there who are skeptical about jumping right into these types of drugs to control their anxiety.

These people are looking for other approaches and want to control their anxiety in more of a natural way and not rely on psychiatric medications.

With this all in mind, lets look at what the science currently says about the best supplements for anxiety.

Certain supplements are especially effective at calming and balancing the brain, which can lessen feelings of anxiety.

Poor Diet = Poor Vitamin B1 Status

Around 1880 is when the Japanese naval physician Admiral Takaki proved that thiamine deficiency was a nutritional disease , and you could actually treat this condition with a diet rich in thiamine.

At the time beriberi was a serious problem for the Japanese fleet with lots of the seamen getting seriously ill and/or dying.

Takai observed that the ordinary crewmen eating mainly white rice got ill, but not the naval officers eating more meat and vegetables.

And so he conducted an experiment where he switched the all-rice diet to a more varied diet including wheat, vegetables, milk and meat.

Guess what happened?

The disease was completely eliminated from the fleet!
