Supplements are not regulated by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration or USDA. So how do you know youre getting safe supplements?

Patton recommends doing the following before buying:

  • Consult your doctor. Before adding any supplements, make sure you talk to your doctor to make sure you need them and that they wont interact with any medications.
  • Look for third-party testing. Some companies will send their products to an outside company to verify that the ingredients are accurate.
  • Look for the USP seal. The United States Pharmacopeia is an independent, nonprofit organization whose goal is to supply safe, quality products.
  • Consider ingredients. Stick with the basics. Vitamins with added ingredients or claims arent necessary and can cause side effects.

So while supplements can be helpful, be mindful of your diet and what you eat. Dont use supplements to replace healthy eating, says Patton.

In large population studies, people who eat lots of fruits and vegetables high in vitamin C appear to have a reduced risk for various types of cancer, including cancers of the mouth, esophagus, stomach, colon, and lung. But its not clear that these benefits come specifically from vitamin C. The Age-Related Eye Disease Study found that a daily supplement containing 500 milligrams of vitamin C, 400 international units of vitamin E, 15 mg of beta carotene, 80 mg of zinc, and 2 mg of copper can help slow the progression of macular degeneration, an age-related eye disease that causes vision loss. But we dont know what benefits, if any, are conferred by vitamin C in particular.

Many people take vitamin C supplements in unnecessarily high doses to prevent or treat various conditions for which its effectiveness is unproved. The vitamin C supplements have variously been touted for preventing cardiovascular disease and osteoarthritis, staving off sunburn, and improving the appearance of wrinkles. None of these purported benefits have been verified in scientific studies.

The recommended vitamin C dosage per day for healthy women is 75 mg per day . For adults, the tolerable upper intake level the highest daily intake likely to pose no risks is 2,000 mg per day.

Foods With Vitamin C Vs Supplements

Should you head to the grocery store or the pharmacy to start upping your vitamin C intake? There are several differences that need to be considered between supplements and food sources of this essential vitamin.

In terms of bioavailability, both seem to be roughly equivalent. According to one review published in the journal Nutrients, while some animal studies have shown a difference in the bioavailability of vitamin C foods vs. supplements, human studies have generally found that both are equally absorbed.

However, several studies have found some adverse effects associated with vitamin C supplements but not food sources.

Additionally, vitamin C foods are also typically rich in a wide array of other important nutrients, including fiber and antioxidants, as well as other vitamins and minerals. Therefore, its best to select natural sources of vitamin C instead of supplemental sources whenever possible to help meet your needs.

Not only does this allow you to take advantage of the unique benefits that vitamin C has to offer, but it can also round out your diet with a host of other micronutrients that are essential to health.

Having said that, a high-quality vitamin C supplement certainly can be beneficial, and side effects are generally rare so long as you select a high-quality supplement from a reputable company.

    Understanding And Limiting Acid Reflux

There’s a valve-like sphincter between the stomach and the bottom of the esophagus that opens when we swallow â and spontaneously at times â permitting lower esophagus acid exposure for about 40 minutes each day, Dr. Rothstein says.

These openings let burps out, but they can also let some stomach contents into the esophagus, which can cause heartburn.

“Up to 40 percent of the population in the U.S. may have acid reflux on a monthly basis,” Dr. Rothstein says. Severe acid reflux that occurs often over an extended period of time is called GERD , according to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases.

You can limit your chances of an acid reflux episode by not eating late at night and avoiding fatty foods, both of which can loosen the lower esophageal sphincter, Dr. Rothstein says. You should also steer clear of chocolate and mint, which can also be triggers.
