Vitamin B6 And Magnesium Combined Therapy

What are vitamins and mineral salts? – Healthy Eating for Kids

The use of large doses of vitamin B6 was first reported to improve speech and language in children diagnosed with “autism syndrome” in the late 1960s. 13 Over the next three decades, a variety of studies were conducted in attempts to show that children with autism significantly improved on a regimen of Vitamin B6 with magnesium. Most of these reported positive outcomes, and called for more research to be conducted. 14,15,16 At least two studies found that children with autism had high levels of B6 in their blood — evidence that their bodies were not efficiently converting the vitamin, and providing a reason why more B6 might prove helpful. 17,18

Unfortunately, most of these studies were not conducted in an ideal way. They were either non-randomized, had no control group, were not “blind”, or were very small. Two more recent studies, which were randomized, double-blind, and placebo-controlled, suggested that B6 and magnesium did not have a statistically significant effect. 19,20 Another, which focused on children with Asperger’s Syndrome and PDD-NOS, found Vitamin B6 appeared to increase verbal IQ scores, although it did not improve social functioning. 21 In brief, results of various studies on the usefulness of Vitamin B6 and magnesium have been contradictory and confusing.

Comparison Of 89 Multivitamins Designed For Kids

Supplementing your child’s diet with a daily multivitamin can be one of the best things you can do for their health. There are 13 vitamins and 14 essential minerals that an infant needs in order to grow and develop properly. Here are several examples of what some of these essential nutrients can do for your child:

  • Vitamin A: improves eye health, repairs damaged tissues
  • The B vitamins: boost metabolism, produce energy
  • Vitamin C: fights infections, reduces the duration of colds
  • Vitamin D: improves bone, heart and brain health
  • Calcium: builds strong bones and teeth
  • Iron: needed for red blood cells, stimulates muscle growth

Minerals And How To Get Them

Heres a list of the minerals you and your family need and how to get them.

Calcium You get calcium from dairy products like milk, cheese and yoghurt, fish with edible bones, like sardines and salmon, tofu and some green leafy vegetables, like kale and bok choy. Calcium builds strong bones and teeth.

Iodine You get iodine from seafood, vegetables grown in iodine-rich soil, iodised salt and bread made with iodised salt. Most bakery and supermarket bread is made with iodised salt, which will give most people enough iodine. Iodine is essential for normal growth and tissue development, and helps control the ways your cells make energy and use oxygen. Pregnant women need higher levels of iodine.

Iron You get iron from meat, liver, chicken, seafood, dried beans, egg yolks and fortified breakfast cereal. Iron is especially important for brain function and red blood cell production, and it also helps carry oxygen around the body.

Zinc You get zinc from meat, chicken, seafood, milk, seeds, tofu and wholegrain cereals. Zinc helps with growth, wound healing and immune system function.

Other essential minerals include phosphorus, magnesium, copper, manganese and chromium.

Fruit and vegetables are vital sources of vitamins and minerals. You might like to read about encouraging your child to eat vegetables or see our illustrated guide to child-friendly fruit and vegies.

Natural Vitamins Versus Supplements

âMost parents use vitamins as an insurance policy, however itâs not a good idea to rely on vitamin supplements to make up for what you perceive as a gap,â Clare says. âItâs far better to role model healthy eating habits it doesnât have to be fancy.â

Research shows that vitamins found in food are far easier for your body to metabolise than vitamins found in supplements.

âMany of the supplements provide a dayâs requirements in one pill, and your body simply canât absorb it all at once, particularly if other foods arenât present. Because whatâs not included in vitamins are all the phytonutrients and trace elements found in real food. Your body needs these to run better and theyâre just not found in supplements.

âThe exception are kids with medical problems that affect vitamin and mineral absorption, or those with food allergies such as coeliac disease. But most healthy people donât need to take vitamins.â

Some children may have an underlying medical condition that reduces their ability to absorb certain nutrients. In such cases, a doctor can advise a person on which supplements to provide.

When providing a dietary supplement, people should choose one that contains the recommended daily amounts of the necessary nutrients. Most multivitamin and mineral formulas contain nutrients in balanced amounts. People should avoid giving a child a supplement that contains nutrient amounts that exceed the recommended guidelines.

Parents and caregivers should also choose supplements with childproof packaging. This will prevent children from eating supplements, which they may mistake for sweets.

Can All Kids Meet Their Nutritional Needs Through Diet

Not all children eat a balanced diet. Some kids are finicky eaters and don’t like the taste of vitamin and mineral-rich foods like fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Kids that refuse to eat certain foods run the risk of nutritional deficiencies. These deficiencies can interfere with their growth and development. Some kids eat a diet that restricts particular foods due to food allergies. Some eat a vegetarian diet. Children that eat diets that lack certain foods may be at greater risk for nutritional deficiencies.

What benefits does a multivitamin offer? Multivitamins for children for children provide vitamins and minerals kids need and may be missing from their diet. They help to fill in dietary “gaps.” Some multivitamin and mineral supplements for kids contain higher levels of certain vitamins and minerals. For example, some are formulated with added vitamin C. Some contain probiotics, gut-friendly bacteria that support intestinal and immune health.

Which Children Need Supplementation

According to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, toddlers and older children who eat a well-balanced diet generally do not need vitamin and mineral supplements.

However, children who are at risk of nutrient deficiencies may require a supplement. Below are some examples in which a dietary supplement may be necessary.

What Ingredients Should Be Avoided In Kids Vitamins

Its also important to look for the ingredients that are added to the tablet that arent vitamins. Ingredients like: Sorbitol, carrageenan, artificial colors and flavors , aspartame, sucralose, to name a few! You definitely dont want to be dosing your child with these ingredients on a daily basis along with their multivitamin.

So lets start with what not to buy: The answer here is most of the commercially available, leading brands of multivitamins. The biggest offender of which is Flinstones Chewable Vitamins.

Whats crazy is that on the label, Flinstones calls out that they are Pediatricians #1 Choice. And most people do buy Flinstones vitamins! I even remember eating them when I was a kid. They tasted so good! It was like a treat every morning. And if you are giving your kids Flinstones vitamins right now, dont feel bad! You are not alone, and thanks to all of the deceptive marketing out there, theres no way youd know that Flinstones isnt the best choice for any child. Before doing all of this research I didnt realize how problematic they were, and why its important to switch away from them.

The reason they are problematic, is because there are a ridiculous number of offensive ingredients in Flinstones Vitamins that truly, should not be there at all, and are not necessary. Take a look at two of their best sellers :

We explore how kids can get their daily dose of vitamins

Getting our kids to eat a healthy diet can be challenging. Whether your child is a fussy eater, time pressures mean you often order takeaway, or the cost of a fresh meal seems too high, at the end of a long day, no parent enjoys the prospect of trying to convince reluctant children to eat their greens.

It can seem so much simpler to just get them to chew a specially-formulated kidâs vitamin and be done with it .

But is that necessary and, more importantly, is it good for their health?

Spelling Out A Good Diet

Because the body cannot naturally produce all the necessary vitamins and minerals, it is important to ensure that kids get these vital building blocks in the foods they eat. A well-balanced diet is typically all it takes to guarantee that kids and teens are getting the necessary vitamins and minerals. But how much of everything do they need?

The USDA recommends that parents use ChooseMyPlate.gov for children as a guideline for how much of certain foods kids and adolescents need for a healthy diet, taking vitamins and minerals into consideration. Because vitamin deficiencies may not be obvious, following the recommendations can help eliminate worries about whether your children are receiving appropriate nutrients.

Runner Ups / Childrens Supplements That Are Borderline

  • Solgar. This is one Id get only if you cant find any of the other ones on the list above, because while most of the ingredients are good, it does have carrageenan which as I mentioned its better to avoid.
  • YummiBears Organic Multivitamin
  • Seeking Health
  • Natures Way Alive! The only downside to these is they are sweetened with sorbitol which is a sugar alcohol that can be irritating to the digestive system. Other than that though, their ingredients look good!
  • Rainbow Light . This was on my top vitamins list until August 2019, when news of a class action against Rainbow Light came out because their prenatal vitamins contained heavy metals . While this class action doesnt apply to their childrens vitamins, Id still be wary of buying from Rainbow Light until they have rigorous heavy metal testing in place for ALL of their vitamins.

I hope this helps you in navigating the world of kids vitamins!

When Does My Child Need Vitamin D And How Much

Multivitamin Chocolate Vitamin for Kids

All children need vitamin D beginning shortly after birth.

  • Children younger than 12 months old need 400 IUalert icon of vitamin D each day.
  • Children 12 to 24 months old need 600 IU of vitamin D each day.

Your childs age matters when it comes to cows milk. For children older than 12 months, plain whole cows milk is a great source of vitamin D.

Most cows milk sold in stores is fortified with vitamin D. For babies younger than 12 months, cows milk is not recommended because it may put your baby at risk for intestinal bleeding. It also has too many proteins and minerals for your babys kidneys to handle easily and does not have the right amount of nutrients your baby needs.

Vitamins For Kids: Whats Really Necessary

One question I get asked frequently is what vitamins should I be giving my kids?

Before answering this question, its important to note that Im a huge proponent of food as medicine. At CentreSpringMD + Peds, we have a holistic approach to pediatric care, and dietary recommendations often are the bulk of our integrative treatment plan for our pediatric patients. That said, as a mom I totally understand that making sure your kids get all of their nutrients from food can be a difficult endeavor. Whether they are picky eaters or not, there are certain nutrients that need to be supplemented to be at their optimal levels.

Omega-3s

Getting enough DHA and EPA in even a healthy adults diet can be a challenge. Im sure there are some kids who love eating wild-caught salmon 3 times a week and grub on flaxseed meal and walnuts every day, but for the rest of the kids out there, some supplementation is needed. DHA and EPA are crucial for optimal brain development and overall health, and they have anti-inflammatory properties as well. We love Nordic Naturals brand as a clean source of fish oil-based DHA/EPA for all ages. It is wonderful for infants through age 3, after which kids can transition to this one. Once theyre able to swallow pills, the ProOmega Junior is the go-to option . With very few exceptions, all my pediatric patients walk away with a recommendation to start a clean Omega-3 supplement.

B Vitamins

Vitamins Important For Brain Function And Memory

Abundant in fruit and leafy greens, B vitamins play important roles in children’s brain development, and deficiencies can cause problems with learning, focusing and memory. According to an article published in “Nature Reviews: Neuroscience” in 2008, folate deficiency during childhood affects brain function even into adulthood 2. Thiamine deficiency can cause a harmful numbing effect on brain nerves, and riboflavin deficiency can cause brain dysfunction. Niacin deficiency can cause memory loss. A child deficient in vitamin B-12, which is most abundant in meat and dairy products, can suffer brain deterioration and delayed development.
