More of us are considering adding vitamin supplements to our diet, but vitamin deficiencies are actually quite rare. Healthy adults who eat a varied, balanced diet and get a little bit of sunshine every day usually get all the vitamins and minerals they need, says Dr Céline Guyomar, a Livi medical doctor.

Keeping your diet varied is important, as no one type of food guarantees that you get enough of everything.

If you suspect that you might need vitamin supplements, talk to a doctor first. There are risks involved, particularly for children, and some supplements can interact with other medications, says Dr Guyomar.

B12 For Memory And Mood

Its commonly thought that taking vitamin B12 can boost your memory and mood. However, theres not a lot of evidence to support this theory.

Animal studies suggest that vitamin B12 deficiency has been associated with memory impairment. Yet, theres currently no evidence that B12 supplements improve memory in humans who arent deficient .

In a large review, vitamin B12 supplements had no effect on depressive symptoms in the short term but may help prevent relapse over the long term (

There are no specific dosage recommendations for B12 supplements for mental performance or mood.

Summary

Optimal dosing of vitamin B12 varies by age, lifestyle, and dietary needs. The general recommendation for adults is 2.4 mcg. Older adults, as well as pregnant and breastfeeding women, require higher doses.

The only vitamins you actually need on a daily basis

Walking down the supplement aisle at your local big box or health food store can be a daunting experience. Youre face to face with hundreds of bottles making all sorts of claims, but which ones do you really need? You eat a healthy diet, so youre getting all of your nutrients from your food, right?

Unfortunately, despite our best attempts, most of us do not get all of the micro- and macro-nutrients we need from our diet alone. The typical modern diet is low in nutrients and high in calories and processed foods.

Even if youre eating your fruits and veggies every day, modern farming practices have depleted the nutrients in our soil, leaving us with food that has inadequate vitamin and mineral levels. Were exposed to toxins in our water, air, food, and even cleaning and personal care products, which can interfere with vitamin and mineral absorption.

Most of us are leading a hectic, constantly-on-the-go lifestyle that puts our stress levels through the roof, which means we need more nutrients, not less. To make matters worse, all of these diet and lifestyle factors also affect our gut health, interfering with proper digestion, which means were not absorbing the nutrients we are getting efficiently.

So, between the lack of nutrition in our food and our inability to absorb vitamins and minerals efficiently Yes, you probably should be taking a daily supplement!

B12 For Improved Energy

How Diet Impacts The Vitamins & Supplements You Need

Chronically cutting food groups from a daily diet can eventually impact nutritional status. Low-carb diets tend to limit intake of fruits, whole grains, beans, and dairy products. While your supplement foundation covers calcium and vitamin D , you may need additional B vitamins to help insure proper metabolism of carbohydrates, fat, and protein. If you follow a vegetarian or vegan diet, then animal products are off limits. Since animal products are a good food source of Vitamin B12, a Vitamin B12 supplement is often recommended for vegans and vegetarians in addition to a multivitamin and calcium with vitamin D. Keep a food diary for 1 week to identify your main nutritional gaps, for example, are you leaving out any major food groups such as bread/cereal or fruit/vegetables? Then choose additional supplements to be included in your daily regimen to close the gaps and ensure adequate levels of all nutrients are maintained in the body. Talk to a registered dietitian if practicing a special diet to help identify any specific nutritional gaps.

Are Multivitamins Actually Good For You

Nearly half of adults in the U.S. take a daily multivitamin, and that number increases to 70 percent for adults over 70 years old. But does that mean a daily multivitamin should be part of everyone’s health regimen? According to Dr. Cherian, the answer isn’t as clear-cut as a simple yes or no.

“Most people take vitamins because they want to be on top of their health and make sure they’re getting all the vitamins they need, in case they aren’t getting enough from their regular diets,” he says. “It may seem like common sense to be taking multivitamins, but there actually isn’t much evidence that a daily cocktail of essential vitamins and minerals actually delivers what you expect.”

In fact, most studies have found no significant benefit from taking a daily multivitamin in protecting the brain or heart, or preventing cancer. Despite the general claims that multivitamins are good for X or Y health goals, these are not necessarily backed by research yet.

Where Should We Get Our Vitamins

Our experts agree that the best source of vitamins is our diet. Whole, fresh, unprocessed foods provide the vitamins our bodies crave. Board certified rehabilitation specialist Dr. Scott Schreiber focuses on obtaining vitamins from whole foods. “Whole foods are the best source of vitamins and minerals,” he tells us. “If it grows from the ground, the way nature intended it, vitamins and minerals occur in their most natural states and can be absorbed the easiest.”

It’s also important to remember that heat can alter the makeup of the vitamins in food. “Cooking methods alter the nutritional status of fresh foods, especially the water-soluble vitamins,” nutritionist Amanda Henham of Vaga Nutrition explains. “So mixing up raw and cooked foods throughout the day is ideal.”

Fruits and vegetables are excellent sources of these vital nutrients. Vitamin A can be found in orange-colored vegetables like sweet potatoes and carrots. Henham recommends eating healthy fats like avocado and nuts to obtain vitamin E and leafy greens for vitamin K.

For the water soluble vitamins, reach for brightly colored fruits and vegetables like oranges, bell peppers, and berries.

Most Older Adults Take Some Kind Of Over

Over-the-counter dietary supplements are big business more than 90,000 products generate about $30 billion every year in the United States. Older adults make up a big part of these sales, too. A survey of almost 3,500 adults ages 60 and older published Oct. 1, 2017, in The Journal of Nutrition found that 70% use a daily supplement , 54% take one or two supplements, and 29% take four or more.

But are these pills good medicine, or a waste of money?

“Supplements are never a substitute for a balanced, healthful diet,” says Dr. JoAnn Manson, a professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School and professor of epidemiology at Harvard’s T.H. Chan School of Public Health. “And they can be a distraction from healthy lifestyle practices that confer much greater benefits.”

So Should You Be Reaching For Vitamin C Supplements

After reviewing the literature, I think that that if youve a healthy child who eats a variety of fruit and vegetables then its probably not necessary. But if youve a child who gets colds they cant seem to shake or becomes very unwell with them, then its worthwhile boosting their diet with vitamin C rich foods or trying a supplement. There is currently no clear evidence that vitamin C supplementation prevents or treats coronavirus.

If youre choosing to give a supplement please be careful not to exceed the recommended dose for age on the packaging and never the upper tolerable limit unless specifically prescribed.

If youve chosen a chewable gummy or tablet, then the answer to this question is simple: chew the supplement as you would food. Water is not required for taking chewable or gummy supplements.

If youre taking a swallowable supplement, the answer is trickier, especially if youre someone who doesnt like swallowing tablets and capsules. Research has shown that the easiest way to swallow a pill depends on whether your vitamin is in capsule or tablet form.
