Zinc is a trace mineral, required by our body in a small amount. It is an essential nutrient required to activate more than 300 enzymes in the body that helps to carry out different functions in the body. Zinc majorly helps in DNA creation, cell growth, protein building, healing damaged tissue, and strengthening the immune system. Taking a sufficient amount of this mineral is particularly important during times of rapid growth, such as childhood, adolescence, and pregnancy.

Common Nutrient Deficiencies: Know The Signs

Severe vitamin C deficiency may bring about scurvy, a condition that includes symptoms ranging from fatigue to depression, joint pain, poor wound healing, and bleeding gums. Though serious, scurvy and even vitamin C deficiency are rare in developed countries. Theres one exception: Smokers have a more-than-threefold-greater risk of vitamin C deficiency, according to research published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. This is likely because smoking causes greater vitamin C turnover in the body. Cigarette smoking increases free radicals in the body, which damages our cells antioxidants such as vitamin C counteract this damage but are depleted more quickly in people who smoke.

My Vitamin And Mineral Protocol To Prevent Infection

For optimal health and to prevent infection by viruses, I recommend taking a multivitamin, along with additional vitamin C, vitamin D , vitamin E , magnesium , and zinc . To find your correct dose of vitamin C, learn about bowel tolerance the daily dose just below the amount that causes a laxative effect. Many people find that when theyre not sick, a dose of 3000 mg 10,000 mg/day taken all at once will cause a laxative effect, but they can tolerate the same daily dose of vitamin C when taken in divided doses. However, when an infection starts, much higher doses can prevent it from taking hold. Of course I recommend healthy eating, and daily exercise, and not smoking or drinking alcohol to excess. You may want to discuss doses of vitamins and minerals with your doctor. You might indeed be doing your physician a favor.

    What To Look For

All supplements should be purchased with caution. You can make sure you’re getting a safe, high-quality supplement by choosing products that have been tested and certified by a third party.

Look for products certified by an independent certifying body like U.S. Pharmacopeia, ConsumerLab, or NSF International.

An ordinary L-ascorbic acid supplement may be a better value than supplements that contain other ingredients.

Dietary Reference Intakes For Vitamins E And C

The Food and Nutrition Board of the Institute of Medicine, a part of the US National Academies, has established a system of dietary reference intake values for the US population that, for the first time, provides advice on the safety of the nutrients. Safety is defined as presenting no unreasonable risk of illness or injury or a reasonable certainty of no harm, under labeled or ordinary conditions of use, as set forth in US laws and regulations for dietary supplements and food additives. The DRI system includes the estimated average requirement, the recommended dietary allowance , and the tolerable upper intake level . The RDA represents the recommended daily intake for meeting normal nutritional needs and preventing clinical deficiency. Compared with the previous RDA, the new recommendations for vitamin E have been increased by 50% for men and by almost 100% for women. Similarly, the new recommendations for vitamin C have been increased by 25% for women and by 50% for men. The DRI values include a UL, which is the maximum amount considered safe for healthy people when used daily for long periods. The RDA and UL values are based on exhaustive reviews of the scientific literature. RDA and UL values for vitamins E and C are shown in .

How To Treat And Prevent Vitamin C Overdose

The single best way to prevent vitamin C overdose is to avoid taking supplements in high doses and to get the vitamin C your body needs from foods instead, especially fresh vegetables and fruits. Some of the foods richest in vitamin C include citrus fruits like oranges, leafy green vegetables, red peppers, melon, berries, kiwi, mango and sweet potatoes.

As mentioned above, vitamin C is water-soluble. What does this mean in terms of getting extra vitamin C out of your body? Do you pee out excess vitamin C?

Because vitamin C is water-soluble, its not as risky to take too much vitamin C as it is to take fat-soluble vitamins like vitamin A or D. Unmetabolized ascorbic acid is excreted in the urine.

That said, overdose of vitamin C is still possible if someone takes supplements in high doses for an extended period of time, especially if that person also consumes lots of vitamin C from his or her diet and/or fortified foods.

How long does it take to get vitamin C out of your system?

Vitamin C can stay in the body for weeks. However, excess amounts are usually urinated out in a matter of hours.

Vitamin C will stay in someones body longer if that person doesnt already have high levels or are deficient. In order to prevent vitamin C from being lost in the urine, its best to take smaller, multiple doses spread out throughout the day.

Vitamin C is known to enhance iron absorption.

    Homemade Vitamin C Gummies

    Ooooh, look what I made!

Guys, I know I sound like a five year old here, but I havent been this excited about making something in a LONG time!

See, every time I go to buy vitamins for the kids, we have an ingredient-reading fest. And Im never happy with the ingredients.

Why does sugar, or worse, high-fructose corn syrup have to be so near the top.

Its either that or artificial sweetener.

    Yuck.

So then I came across this recipe on Pinterest for making your own vitamin C gummies. THAT caught my eye!

She used orange juice, which makes sense since it already contains quite a bit of vitamin C, but I never have orange juice around. Plus she added honey, which I didnt want to do, but since orange juice is a bit tart even without adding vitamin C powder, I didnt know if I could get away with not adding any.

Look, these arent candy, and theyre not super sweet. I figure this will help keep my kids from climbing the refrigerator shelves to get to them. Didnt work. Apparently just the fact that theyre gummies makes them desirable.

So yeah, no added sugar = still sweet enough to be tasty. Suite me. More than suites me actually.

You can use whatever juice you want to I used grape because it seemed like the best combination of sweetness and flavor to mask the tartness of the Vitamin C. Apple would work really well too I think.

    Ingredients In Homemade Vitamin Gummies

Nature Made Vitamin C 1000 mg Tablets, 100 Count
    • Juice – we have tried pomegranate juice, orange juice and NingXia Red which wolfberry juice made by Young Living.
    • High Dose Vitamin C Powder or Ascorbic Acid – I buy both high dose vitamin-c and ascorbic acid on Amazon however you might be able to find it in your local health food store as well. We love Sufficient-C because it tastes like peach lemonade and this brand of Ascorbic Acid is also really good.
    • Raw Honey – raw honey is a great source of antioxidants and also has antibacterial properties. In this case we are using it to sweeten our gummies as well as add phytonutrients.
    • Gelatine – I use Knox gelatin in my gummies however if you are vegan you can use agar agar powder.
    • Essential Oils – oils are optional however I like adding Young Living vitality oils for an extra source of immune support. If you add essential oils, make sure that they are GRAS certified and safe to ingest!

How is your summer going so far?! Isnt it exciting that we can officially say that now since summer started on Monday? Im so excited to share this Tangerine Creamsicle Vitamin C Smoothie with you, featuring Tangerine Emergen-C, my favorite flavor.

I love summer. I especially love that its the only time in Portland when it doesnt rain everyday. When summer comes, like much of the Pacific Northwest, I feel like its the first time Im seeing the sun. But, I must say summer in Portland is magical. The city comes alive, and somehow becomes even more beautiful. Those nine months of rain certainly pay off.

My absolute favorite summer activities include going to the lake, hiking, outdoor movies in the park, and, naturally, the beach. I love to keep active during the summer, and if I can do that while exploring the outdoors and nature, even better! There are countless gorgeous hikes in and around Portland. Pick your poison, Portland has it: waterfalls, wildflower fields, dormant volcanoes, Japanese gardens, wildlife refuges, mountains, and more.

Powell Butte itself is an extinct volcanic cinder cone butte, so that alone is pretty amazing.

I also felt like I was getting sick. I just had zero energy.

This is an excellent post-workout recovery drink to sip after a day of hiking and adventuring.

Taking Supplements In High Doses May Lead To Kidney Stones

Excess vitamin C is excreted from the body as oxalate, a bodily waste product.

Oxalate typically exits the body via urine. However, under some circumstances, oxalate may bind to minerals and form crystals that can lead to the formation of kidney stones .

Consuming too much vitamin C has the potential to increase the amount of oxalate in your urine, thus increasing the risk of developing kidney stones .

In one study that had adults take a 1,000-mg vitamin C supplement twice daily for 6 days, the amount of oxalate they excreted increased by 20% .

High vitamin C intake is not only associated with greater amounts of urinary oxalate but also linked to the development of kidney stones, especially if you consume amounts greater than 2,000 mg (

    Summary

Consuming too much vitamin C may increase the amount of oxalate in your kidneys, which has the potential to lead to kidney stones.

    Linus Pauling Institute Recommendation

    21st Century Vitamin C – 1000 mg

Combined evidence from metabolic, pharmacokinetic, and observational studies, and from randomized controlled trials supports consuming sufficient vitamin C to achieve plasma concentrations of at least 60 mol/L. While most generally healthy young adults can achieve these plasma concentrations with daily vitamin C intake of at least 200 mg/day, some individuals may have a lower vitamin C absorptive capacity than what is currently documented. Thus, the Linus Pauling Institute recommends a vitamin C intake of 400 mg daily for adults to ensure replete tissue concentrations an amount substantially higher than the RDA yet with minimal risk of side effects.

This recommendation can be met through food if the diet includes at least several servings of vitamin C-rich fruit and vegetables as part of the daily recommended fruit and vegetable intake . Most multivitamin supplements provide at least 60 mg of vitamin C.

Vitamin C: The Evidence For Safety

The preponderance of scientific evidence, which has been thoroughly reviewed by several authors, shows consistently that vitamin C is safe at intakes of 2000 mg/d . Several hypothesized adverse effectsincluding the hypotheses of adverse effects of increased oxalate and kidney stone formation, increased uric acid concentrations, excess iron absorption, reduced vitamin B-12 concentrations, systemic conditioning , and prooxidant effectswere examined in detail and were found to have no substantive basis .

Although vitamin C supplementation may be less studied than vitamin E supplementation for the prevention for chronic disease, several clinical trials are relevant to its safety evaluation . For example, in the Roche European American Cataract Trial , the Age-Related Eye Disease Study , and the simvastatin-niacin study of Brown et al , patients who received the vitamin cocktails also ingested vitamin C at doses of 750, 500, and 1000 mg/d, respectively. A combination of 800 IU vitamin E/d and 1000 mg vitamin C/d has been reported to attenuate the beneficial effects of a combined simivastatin-niacin treatment when measured as angiographic endpoints, but it had no significant effects on the treatments clinical endpoints . The meaning of this observation with respect to the safety of vitamin E, vitamin C, or both in the presence or absence of simivastatin and niacin is not known.

Is Taking A Huge Dose Of Vitamin C Bad For Me

Vitamin C is an important nutrient, but as the old saying goes too much of a good thing can be a bad thing.

After taking too much vitamin C, you may experience symptoms such as:

    • Diarrhea

So how much vitamin C is too much?

For adults, the daily upper limit of vitamin C is 2,000 mg. For teens, it’s 1,800 mg. For children, the upper limit depends on age, and it ranges from 400 to 1,200 mg per day.

In addition, vitamin C is water-soluble, making it hard for your body to store it with excess being secreted in your urine. So even if you’re adult and can handle the 1,000 mg in each vitamin C packet or pill, just know that your body can’t absorb more than about 400 mg. This means that most of the vitamin C in that supplement you’re taking just goes down your toilet .

All this to say, however, that getting the recommended amount of vitamin C is still a critical step in staying healthy, as this vitamin plays many important roles in your body. But, you don’t need to take a supplement to make that happen.
