Retinol Esters Have Been Used As Markers

Nutritional Supplements : Benefits of Cod Liver Oil With Lemon Juice

Retinyl esters can be distinguished from retinol in serum and other tissues and quantified with the use of methods such as high-performance liquid chromatography.

Elevated amounts of retinyl ester in the fasting state have been used as markers for chronic hypervitaminosis A in humans and monkeys. This increased retinyl ester may be due to decreased hepatic uptake of vitamin A and the leaking of esters into the bloodstream from saturated hepatic stellate cells.

Fish Oil Versus Cod Liver Oil: Is Vitamin D A Reason To Go Back To The Future

To the Editor: As Dr. Oh1 points out in his article, fish oil supplementation has gained popularity in recent years because of the many health benefits of omega-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids . Dr. Ohs article provides a thorough review of the literature on this topic and recommendations for fish oil supplementation. However, although fish oil is an excellent source of omega-3 LCPUFAs, it doesnt provide the significant levels of vitamin D that cod liver oil does.2 Vitamin D is concentrated in the liver of the fish and thus plentiful in cod liver oil, a time-honored source of vitamin D. Fish oil is made from the whole body of the fish and has an insignificant amount of vitamin D.

Cod liver oil contains both vitamin D and omega-3 LCPUFAs.2 Individuals at higher risk for vitamin D deficiency may wish to consider substituting cod liver oil for fish oil supplementation.

Controlled Intervention Studies Of Nutritional Supplements In The Management Of Tb

Historically, the use of cod-liver oil for the treatment of TB was the taproot from which grew the broader field of nutritional management of TB. In 18th and 19th century Europe, TB was responsible for 25% of adult deaths. Survival after diagnosis was approximately two years. Treatment for TB was revolutionized by the use of cod-liver oil which had been used for its medicinal properties. Treating TB patients with cod-liver oil in the 18th century resulted in weight gain and increased survival rates from 2 to 8 years. In the early 20th Century, one U.S. study reported that TB patients treated with cod-liver oil gained weight and only 10% died in contrast with weight loss and 70% mortality in the comparison group during approximately 1 year of observation. Cod-liver oil contains vitamins A and D which are important in host defense against TB.

Potential Benefits Of Cod Liver Oil And Other Fish Oils

Cod liver oil can be consumed by eating the liver of a cod fish. But unless you live by the sea, youve probably only seen cod liver oil in capsule or liquid form.

As with most fish oils , cod liver contains omega-3 fatty acids, eicosatetraenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid , which is a type of healthy fat that has been linked with cardiovascular health, immunity and brain development. Unlike other fish oils, however, cod liver does contain a relatively higher amount of fat-soluble vitamin A and vitamin D.

Because the Western diet is higher in processed food, it’s difficult for many adults to get enough omega-3 fats from dietary sources, said Jennifer Oikarinen, a registered dietitian at Banner – University Medical Center Phoenix. So many people look to other alternatives, such as fish oils and other plant-based means of getting omega-3s. But I dont recommend cod liver.

    Measuring Supplement Nutrient Intake

Supplements were recorded by participants in the Back of the Diary . The ViMiS database contained the nutrient analyses per unit of consumption using supplement-specific manufacturers data. Where the participants did not record the supplement data in sufficient detail, a weighted average of available options was taken from the ViMiS database. Missing values for EPA and DHA nutrient composition were estimated from CLO supplements of similar type and CLO content. Quantities of vitamins and fatty acids were converted to match the unit of food intake. The average daily nutrient intake from supplements for each participant was calculated and added to their average daily food intake to obtain TNI. Participants were grouped into one of the three subgroups:

    • NSU: participants not consuming any supplement

    • SU: participants consuming supplement but this supplement did not contain the specific nutrient being studied

    • SU+: participants consuming supplement that contained the specific nutrient being studied participants who consumed a supplement with a daily nutrient intake below the set thresholds , were considered SU rather than SU+, as described in detail elsewhere .

    Discovery Of Vitamin D

Sir Edward Mellanby was the first to discover that cod liver oil could cure rickets in experimental animals, prompting the suggestion that this substance might contain a fat soluble, antirachitic substance.1 Although the activity was initially attributed to vitamin A, McCollum and co-workers2 subsequently demonstrated that the substance was novel and gave it the name vitamin D. It was demonstrated that this antirachitic factor could be produced through the exposure of skin or food substances to UV light,3 thereby providing a scientific explanation for why rickets in children could be cured with sunlight or artificially produced UV light.5 The isolation and chemical identification of the two forms of the vitamin, vitamin D2 and vitamin D3, were eventually achieved by Askew and colleagues26 and Windaus, Schenk, and von Werder in 1936.4 This work, however, represents only the beginning stages of vitamin D research, as efforts still continue to define the physiological and molecular details of an intricate endocrine system essential to the maintenance of calcium and phosphorus homeostasis as well as many unanticipated additional biological processes.
