Macular Degeneration Supplements

Both vitamin E and C are powerful eye health supplements that can protect your eyes against unstable molecules that can damage cells, causing illness and aging .

Antioxidants have become a buzz word for good reason. Many eye conditions are associated with an imbalance between antioxidants and free radicals in your body. Vitamin E is a potent antioxidant that helps protect your cells including the cells in your eyes. Some studies suggest that it helps prevent both age-related macular degeneration and cataracts.

Optometrist Recommendation: Daily dose, at least 100IU to get the benefits.

Who Should Buy Eye Vitamins

Eye vitamins are in a relatively small group of supplements that have been studied exhaustively in large, multi-site clinical studies and been proven effective. Theyre great for the following groups:

Older adults who want to preserve their vision as they age. Eye function is a major victim of aging, but eye vitamins can preserve ocular health. They provide specific nutrients needed by enzymes in your eyes to function properly, and they work best when taken before serious ocular health degeneration has occurred, so eye vitamins are a great addition to your supplementation regimen if youre getting older.

People at risk for macular degeneration. If you have a history of macular degeneration in your family, or have any of the other risk factors for macular degeneration , you should definitely take an eye vitamin. Theyve been clinically proven to slow the progress of macular degeneration, so theyre a must-have.

People over 50. While younger people dont need to worry about taking an eye vitamin just yet, once you are age 50, taking an eye vitamins is a very good idea if you are looking to preserve your visual acuity, since the risk of age-related vision degeneration increases dramatically after age 50.

Macular degeneration vitamins are the way to go if you are to slow down the progression of the condition. The following are some vitamin options that are thought to work well when it comes to AMD.

Macula lutea is the full name of the macula part of the eye. This name is derived from the existence of lutein that gives macula a yellowish tint.

You see, the macula receives light and sends signals to the brain via the optic nerve . That makes it susceptible to damage from light sources like blue light and UV rays.

Lutein is responsible for absorbing any excess light that enters the macula to prevent it from causing damage. Another thing you may want to know about Lutein is that it is an antioxidant. Therefore, it works to neutralize the free radicals in the macula .

Free radicals cause cell damage and oxidative stress that can then lead to AMD. Therefore, lutein can help prevent the condition from worsening. Generally, you can get this vitamin from vegetables like carrots, squash, and tomatoes.

Vitamin A

This macular degeneration suppressing vitamin is known by several names. When it comes from plants, it begins as beta-carotene and then transforms to vitamin A in the body.

On the other hand, Vitamin A consumed from plants is in retinol form. This vitamin boosts the immune system and helps soothe eye inflammation .

If you are wondering where you can get beta-carotene, leafy greens, sweet potatoes, and carrots are a great source.

What Is Macular Degeneration

Should I take eye vitamins? Macular degeneration / AREDS – A State of Sight #81

Before we go any further, we feel you should understand what macular degeneration is. AMD is a condition that affects a tiny part of the retina known as the macula.

Now, the main job of the macula is to sharpen your vision so that you can see clear images .

As such, the first symptom of AMD is usually blurry vision. But, although it does not always lead to blindness, it can negatively affect your central vision. You can have either dry or wet AMD.

Therefore, it is important to use supplements as they reduce the risk of vision loss by one-fifth. This is according to a study by the Natural Eye Institute .

A cataract is another degenerative eye disease defined as cloudiness forming on the eyes clear lens. The growing cloudiness can cause blurry vision depending on the location and the size of the mass.

Glaucoma is yet another age-related eye condition. Fluid and pressure build up in the eye, causing damage to the optic nerve. When fibers in the optic nerve are damaged, areas of blindness occur. If the entire nerve is damaged, you will become blind.

Differences From Areds 1 Formula

Diet for Macular Degeneration | Macular Degeneration Vitamins

The AREDS 1 Formula differs from the AREDS 2 Formula in that AREDS 1 contains beta carotene. Beta carotene was linked with lung cancer in smokers and former smokers. Therefore, in the AREDS 2 Formula, the beta carotene has been replaced with lutein and zeaxanthin.

If you are a smoker, or you have smoked in the past, its advisable to take the AREDS 2 Formula rather than the AREDS 1 Formula.

Beta carotene, lutein, and zeaxanthin are micronutrients called carotenoids, which are structurally similar to vitamin A. These nutrients are transported to the retina, where they are thought to protect against damage done by light.

I Am Worried That I Might Develop Amd Can Supplements Prevent It

Several studies have looked at the role of antioxidant supplements in the prevention of AMD. At present there is no evidence to suggest that people who dont have AMD should take lutein and zeaxanthin, antioxidant supplements such as the AREDS2 formula or any other multivitamins marketed for eye health, to prevent them from developing AMD in the future.

Delayed Progression Not Prevention

If taking AREDS 2 Formula vitamins can prevent AMD from progressing, it would make sense that AREDS 2 Formula might be a good preventative supplement to begin taking at a young age but this is not the case.

Studies have shown that these supplements are safe to take, but there have not been any lifelong studies to show that long-term use of AREDS 2 is safe or effective. Therefore, AREDS 2 vitamins are only recommended for people upon recommendation of the ophthalmologist for those with a specific number of drusen and/or those who have lost vision in one eye.

Its important to note that nutritional vitamins and supplements do not prevent AMD, however, studies have shown that AREDS 2 supplements may delay progress from the intermediate to the advanced stage of AMD. The overall goal of vitamin supplementation is to enable people with AMD to keep their vision longer.

Vitamin Supplements For Amd Based Off Areds2 Study

The results of the AREDS study were published in 2001, and in the over 20 years since then, science has found additional nutrients that can help support retinal health and slow down AMD progression. In fact, a second AREDS study, AREDS2, launched in 2006 to see if adding omega-3 fatty acids or lutein and zeaxanthin into the formula would show improvement.4

AREDS2 study included4

  • 82 clinical sites across the U.S.

Participants included those who had intermediate AMD in both eyes or intermediate AMD in one eye and advanced AMD in the other. This study did not include those with early or no AMD because AREDS showed that the formulation had no benefit to those individuals.

AREDS2 results showed that the beta-carotene, an original nutrient in the AREDS formula, increased the risk for lung cancer in those individuals who were former smokers. Thankfully, removing this nutrient from the AREDS formula resulted in no significant changes.

The substitute for beta-carotene in the AREDS 2 Maculr Degeneration formula is lutein and zeaxanthin, which resulted in an increase in benefit.

How Do They Help

Lutein and zeaxanthin can help protect your eyes from harmful high-energy light waves like ultraviolet rays in sunlight. Studies suggest that a high level of both in eye tissue is linked with better vision, especially in dim light or where glare is a problem.

Diets rich in these two nutrients may help hold off age-related eye diseases. For example, one study found that people who ate foods rich in zeaxanthin — think âgreen veggiesâ like spinach, kale, and broccoli — may be half as likely to get cataracts. Another showed that if you have macular degeneration, which causes damage to the middle of your retina and can take away your central vision, supplements with lutein and zeaxanthin can slow its progress.

Note: Many studies combine these two nutrients with others such as vitamins C and E. It may be that the mix of nutrients does more for your eyes than any single one of them.

Recommended daily allowance: No RDA has been set for either nutrient.

Recommended level for eye health: 10 mg/day for lutein and 2 mg/day for zeaxanthin.

Safe upper limit: Researchers have not set an upper limit for either.

Potential risks: In excess, they may turn your skin slightly yellow. Research seems to show that up to 20 mg of lutein daily is safe.
