Treatment Of Vitamin D Deficiency

What’s The Best Multivitamin For Diabetes And High Blood Sugar?

The two forms of vitamin D supplements are D2 and D3 . Both increase vitamin D in the blood. Vitamin D supplements are readily available, inexpensive, easy to administer, and safe. At high doses, vitamin D2 may be less potent than vitamin D3. The safe upper limit for vitamin D is 1,0001,500 IU/day for infants, 2,5003,000 IU/day for children aged 18 years, and 4,000 IU/day for children 9 years of age, adults, and pregnant and lactating teens and women.

Current DRI Recommendations for Vitamin D

Although levels of supplementation used in practice vary among practitioners, recommendations do exist within the literature. One group recommends the following for vitamin D repletion: 1,000 IU/day of vitamin D3 if 25D is 3040 ng/ml, 2,000 IU/day of vitamin D3 if 25D is 2030 ng/ml, and, for adults with serum levels < 20 ng/ml, prescribe 50,000 IU of vitamin D2 once to three times per week for 4 weeks followed by 3,000 IU/day until serum 25D levels are > 30 ng/ml. Then, recheck serum 25D levels 36 months later, and continue treating until serum levels are > 40 ng/ml.

Some experts have found that between 2,000 and 4,000 IU/day of vitamin D3 is necessary to reduce the risks of cancer and autoimmune disease and therefore recommend these higher doses for patients with these specific disease states. Experts also recommend supplementing infants and children with at least 400 IU/day of vitamin D3, especially infants who are breastfed.

The following diseases and conditions have been researched to assess their relationship with vitamin D status: osteomalacia/osteoporosis, muscle function and falls, cancer, multiple sclerosis, hypertension, type 1 diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, tuberculosis,, mental health, cardiovascular events,, infection,, seasonal affective disorder, obesity, aging, and overall mortality.

Flaxseed contains high levels of the essential omega-3 fat alpha-linolenic acid , along with protein, fiber and plant compounds called lignans that act as antioxidants when ingested.

Lignans present in flaxseed, are known to improve the blood sugar levels in type 2 diabetics. having flaxseed on a daily basis can help maintain your blood sugar levels over an extended period of time.

    A Closing Note About Supplements

Top 5 Diabetic Supplements that can truly change your health and diabetes

While supplementation can be extremely therapeutic, it is important to follow a few safety rules when introducing supplements to your routine. First, consult a functional medicine practitioner and utilize supplements based on your unique situation, history, blood work, and symptoms.

Many doctors have not been trained on the biochemistry of vitamins and plant-based nutraceuticals, so a trained functional medicine doctor is your best resource.

It is also important to buy reputable pharmaceutical-grade brands. Time and again, consumer watch groups have found that supplements in chain stores such as GNC, Walgreens, and Target do not have quality supplements, and often, upon testing, the supplements are not what they are labeled as. Find brands that your doctor recommends and that have been tested for quality.
