Vitamins Inside A Lemon

Lemons have several nutrients in them, making them one of the healthiest fruits to eat. The three main nutrients that lemons contain are:

  • Vitamin C: There is approximately 40% of your daily intake needed of vitamin C in one lemon. This is a nutrient that provides immune support and promotes cardiovascular health. Its recommended that adults daily intake of vitamin C is 2000 mg.
  • Potassium: This electrolyte helps in daily functioning processes, such as blood pressure and digestion. In one lemon weighing 58 grams, you receive 80 mg of potassium.
  • Fiber: Fiber is a carbohydrate that aids in digestion and lowering cholesterol. One lemon contains 2.8 grams of fiber.

Both potassium and fiber are essential to include in your diet, especially neither is produced naturally in the body. The main fiber inside a lemon is called pectin, which can help lower blood sugar and is found in the pulp.

Foods With Vitamin C That Youll Want To Try Right Now

Foods with vitamin C are easy to find if you know where to look. And thats a good thing, considering how important the nutrient is for your health.

You might already know that vitamin C, also called ascorbic acid, supports a healthy immune system. But the health benefits of vitamin C go way beyond launching strong attacks against germs.

“Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant, Caroline Green, RD, LD, a South Carolinabased registered dietitian and certified intuitive eating counselor, tells SELF. Antioxidants, as SELF reported previously, help neutralize unstable molecules called free radicals. When free radicals are left unchecked, they can damage cells through a process called oxidative stress, which can set the stage for various conditions, including cardiovascular disease, cancer, Alzheimers disease, and diabetes, according to the National Institutes of Health. Higher consumption of antioxidants may lower the risk of contracting these diseases.

Your tissues and skin need the stuff too. Vitamin C, which is a water soluble vitamin, is a key player in the formation of blood vessels, cartilage, muscle, and the skin-smoothing protein collagen. In fact, it’s perhaps even more important in collagen formation than protein is, Dana Ellis Hunnes, PhD, MPH, RD, senior clinical dietitian at UCLA Medical Center and author of Recipe for Survival, tells SELF.

Worst Choice: Juice ‘cocktails’

Be on alert for the terms juice cocktail, juice-flavored beverage, and juice drink. Most of these products have only small amounts of real juice. Their main ingredients are usually water, small amounts of juice, and some type of sweetener, such as high-fructose corn syrup. Nutritionally, these drinks are similar to most soft drinks: rich in sugar and calories, but low in nutrients. Water is a better choice.

Good Choice: Red Grape Juice

You’ve probably heard that red wine, in moderation, can be good for the heart. The same is true of red grape juice. Red grape juice has flavonoids and resveratrol. The key is that red wine and juice are made with the entire grape: seeds, skin, and all. But you’re not getting the fiber that you would from the fruit itself.

Comparing Lemons To Oranges

The main difference between lemons and oranges is most obviously how we eat them. Most people dont snack on full lemons because they are acidic and sournot necessarily fun to bite into. They arent as sweet as oranges, making it less enticing to munch through to get all of the nutritional value.

Luckily, fresh-squeezed lemonade with pulp or shaving the peel on top of dishes are ways to get the benefits of the lemon into your body.

Lemons and oranges both contain most of their vitamin C in their peels, but overall an orange will have more nutritional value when eaten whole. You will find, however, that lemon juice contains more vitamin C than orange juice. Lemons also are lower in sugar than oranges, so if you are trying to cut back on sugar, lemons might be your best choice!

If you like a bit more tang, try adding more lemon into your diet! Its delicious and versatile. Yes, it can be sour, but there are ways to enjoy more tame versions of it. Try a glass of warm tea with lemon and honey, homemade lemon vinaigrette, freeze lemon wedges into ice cubes and add to your drinks, squeeze lemon over chicken or fish, or make lemon butter sauce for your pasta.
